I was prescribed Zocor for high cholesterol. Almost immediately I began to experience body aches -- some days more severe than others. I would take ibuprofen and it would help. Then, I started getting a pretty strong pain on my hip which radiated down my leg onto my foot. The pain was so severe, even the Motrin 800 mg. pills didn't help it. I am 53 years old, but I felt like a 90 year old. I had problems walking, especially after sitting for an hour or so. I had problems with stairs. Even laying down was painful. I tried heating pads, ointments, etc. When I told my doctor about it, she said that this was a typical side effect of statins, and that because I am diabetic, I need to continue taking Zocor to keep my cholesterol down. Just the other day, I stopped taking Zocor for 3 glorious days and guess what? NO pain!!! I resumed it because my doctor insists that I stay on it, but I wish there was something else I could take that wouldn't cause pain.
Oldcarpetcleaner - I perserevred for 4.5 years. I almost died I have been off it for 10 months and still have to take oxycontin a narcotic pain killer every day. Apperantly the trials of these statin drugs showed there was no benefit to women or elderly. Seems like cholestrol is abundant in mothers milk and is essential for longevity. Please don't take my word - check it all out. Strong advice if you like your doctor don't be confrontational, just take the prescription and don't fill it out. I hate what my doctor did to me, I had lost my mind and had it out with him, now I have another doctor who does not know my history which is disadvantageous for me so this is real good advice for you. Take COq10 but make sure it is the kaneka brand. Best for your health from New Zealand.
Michellerodriguez2392 - You may be right about needing a new doctor. My last lab tests (June, 2008) showed my total cholesterol at 131. My HDL 39, LDL 58 and triglycerides 139 -- my doctor said these were excellent results, but when I asked she if I could get off Zocor, she said "no," that if she took me off of it, my cholesterol would climb back up. Along with a multi vitamin I take CoQ10 and Omega 3 and will continue to take them. I just feel that if I lowered my cholesterol to these levels (which are way below normal, I find), I shouldn't have to continue the Zocor, but my doctor disagrees.
Peggi - I work in a docor's office and a patient of ours is using Red Yeast Rice that he gets a Sam's. He never took the medicine his docotor prescribed--only the Red Yeast Rice. Last visit his doctor said "Your cholesterol meds are really helping you---the man told his doctor he hadn't filled the prescription and told him what he was taking. He told him to keep up the good work. I have several of the side effects and I am going to tell my doctor that I am going to try the Red Yeast Rice. I want to feel better and I can always to back to the medication!! But I hope I never have to take in again!
Michellerodriguez2392 - Thanks! I will definitely give it a try. I much prefer trying natural ways before taking meds. Like you said, I can always go back to them if I need to.
D29e30 - I just heard from a friend that his dr. said statins like zocor deplete coQ10 and causes this pain and to take coQ10. He did and the pains down his legs went away.
Swedish - I think it`s so said that the pharmaceutical industry has managed to brain wash the whole world to think that cholesterol is something evil that will cause heart problems.
That`s what I thought too until I started to look for information on the cholesterol issue as I had 3 relatives that took Zocor and suffered side effects.

I live in Sweden and we have the same problems here.
Unfortunately, we don´t have any forums such as this, but some very good ones on low carb diets for diabetes patients.
Oldcarpetcleaner - I can't believe that at my age that I actually severely doubt doctors. The undisputable truth is that over a long period my doctor continued to fail me and I an't see any logical reason for this. I'ts not like it is a one off error. Yours and my circumstances are similar. So now we go to the postings that show there is strong evidence that to lower cholestrol to low can cause immune problems, violence and mental dysfunction etc etc. Another study clearly shows there is no advantage to females or elderly from statins and indeed higher cholestrol is actually needed in the elderly for longeivity. Now if we get osterio porisis (boney decay thing) from radiation that killed a tumour that was going to kill us then of course we don't mind the side effect because we get to live longer than what the tumour might otherwise have allowed. For these people to fill us up on these terrible medicines in the same way mother used to push cod liver oil tablets down our throat and they do not know that the medicine may NOT even be needed, that the medicine clearly strips coq10 and then in most circumstances they refuse to believe even the drug companies warnings regarding adverse side effects completey defies belief. This is similar to an electricain saying those loose wires that are sparking over by that damp floor is ok so long as kids don't touch it. jail could happen in such a case. I now firmly believe that I am safer with my supposedly raised cholestrol, I can actually think which helps sometimes. Michellerodriguez2392 - Well, I have officially been off Zocor now for 10 days, and I am amazed at how the pain on my leg has subsided tremendously, and the overall aches and pains have totally disappeared. I have not told my doctor I stopped the medication, but I did go for my usual 3-month blood work - should get the results in the next couple of days. There is a bakery on my way to work, and every morning I stop and buy their warm, delicious oatmeal (which I really love). I have been eating oatmeal for breakfast every day now for 4 months. (Good thing I really love oatmeal and don't get tired of it.) I am DETERMINED not to take any more statins. I feel like a completely different person. I believe that between the oatmeal, the Omega 3's and CoQ10, plus walking my little dog every evening will really help me maintain low cholesterol levels without having to take Zocor again. I'm really hoping that is the case. Thank you all for your input. Best.
