Zocor Spinal Tap, High Cholesterol, Mevacor, Lovastatin, Muscle Weakness
Posted over a year ago
i was a healthy 35 year old male but had high cholesterol, so the doctor prescribed lovastatin (mevacor) and tried it for a month but developed muscle weakness. months later, i'm still experiencing severe muscle spasms and my neurologist is stumped -- mri's, spinal tap, emg -- all normal. I just want to feel normal again. can anyone help? please email me!
Drmike4777 - I posted the following information belolw under Simvastatin, the generic equivalent of Zocor.
"In follow-up to my posting 3-days ago, regarding an adverse reaction to Simvastatin 80mg, I would encourage patients/consumers to directly send their complaint to the web sites listed at the very bottom, if you are either a U.S. (FDA Form 3500) or Canadian resident. Also, if your physician is unresponsive to your negative experience with generic Simvastatin, inform him/her that you refuse to continue with this drug, and that you have sent an adverse reaction complaint to the FDA/Canadian equivalent. Provide both your doctor and pharmacy with a copy of the FDA Form 3500 if your a U.S. resident, so they know you're serious. Lastly, I'm back to feeling normal, after I "demanded" my physician switch me to generic Pravastatin 40mg (2 tabs a day - 80mg), manufactured by Teva Pharmaceutical - corporate HQ Israel with manufacturing facility in Pennsylvania. By the way, a 90-day supply of this quality controlled drug is available at Walmart Pharmacy for $10. I hope this helps, especially seniors on a fixed income. -

In closing, I would encourage you to discontinue your statin, especially if it's made by a company based in India or China (call your pharmacist, they can tell you the country of origin).
Arava1 - Hi I too have awful muscle spasms since taking Lipitor(statins.) Doctors must know this is a side effect but cannot imagine how ill it makes you feel andthe pain can be unbearable. My doctors advice was "keep taking them" but I am keen to stop. we should try the dietary way. Good luck . I hate the trouble you are having. keep strong
Bobafet1240 - I went through the same side affects and MRI and Spinal Tap about three years ago after taking Zocor for about 2.5 months. Unfortunately, I'm still feeling the same affects but not as intense. I don't think you can do this, but I been eating oatmeal (cooked and instant) about 5 to 6 days a week ever since I've stopped the Zocor, and my cholesterol has not been over 160 in two years with my HDL higher than my LDL. I'm a bit over wait, I don't exercise as much as I should but I don't eat a lot of fattie foods every day either. My point is this, a doctor who is binded by the law to stare away for common sense holistic treatments and recommendations and by law and in some cases personal vested interests to stare you toward pharmaceutical solutions, is not genuinely interested in your phyical well being but in there pocket book and sharing the insurance money wealth among their buddies in the medical field. STOP TAKING THE STATINS. These drugs are well documented as dangerous and disrupts if not destroy your nervous system. No, I'm not a doctor, but I don't need someone with a diploma to tell me how MY body feels. Not everyone have these side affects but one size does not fit all in medicine and ALL doctors KNOW THIS. It's just more lucrative to throw pills at the first patient, and get the next insurance payment in and out the door. I hope you are feeling better and found a doctor that was able to help you since your post. Good luck.
Finewine9152 - I too have developed sever muscle spasms after I stated taking cholesterol medications. The doc. put me on them when I was told I had dibetic about 3 yrs ago. I have tried 5 different kinds and would develope severe muscle spasms with each. I have been off cholesterol pills for more than 2 yrs (would put up with the high cholesterol than the pain). The only thing I could get to relieve the spasms was quinine. However, now you can't get the generic and the name now is QUALAQUIN. It works but is VERY expensive. If anyone knows how to obtain straight QUININE PLEASE LET ME KNOW. My e-mail address is sueely@hotmail.com
THANKS. HOPE THIS HELPS

Deanmartin495 - I take lovastatin for the last 5 years and on occasion get severe hamstring cramps. People say I need to drink water, which I do but the cramps come and go. I think I may be deficient with potassium. Maybe i'll try bananas.
777 - ALL statins are dangerous drugs that cause MANY side effects . .sooner or later. The drs. and the drug co's are doing a SCAM . . big $$$$. Cholesterol is NOT the enemy . . your mind/body NEEDS cholesterol to function properly . . .don't let your dr. to con you.
Sbaits - My husband has had muscle pain for 7 months and can not work. How long did it take before yours went away?
