I was born with heart defects, which went undiagnosed until I was in my 30s. I had surgery to patch a large hole at age 34, then had mitral valve repaired at age 44. Then I developed atrial fibrillation. The doctor tried cardioversion and medication, but my heart would not stay in sinus rhythm. So I had to go on warfarin for life. In 2006 I had radiofrequency ablation done, but the doctor was not able to fix one of the arrhythmias, it's behind where the patch was placed, so he said I had to stay on the warfarin. I've been on warfarin for many years, I'm 62 now. I had 8 nosebleeds, had my nose cauterized. I take 11 medications a day, counting the warfarin. I have bipolar disorder, so I float between mania and depression, I see a psychiatrist and have meds for that. I've always had severe tension headaches and I am allowed to take a prescription, Fioricet, for them. I haven't noticed anything major except the nosebleeds. Since having the nose cauterized it sometimes oozes blood in the winter. I live alone in an apartment, and can't control the heat. I worry that I'll fall and frankly, that I will die because I'll bleed internally. So I am careful. When I had my periods I didn't have heavier bleeding. I do have major hair loss. I used to have thick, loose curls or waves, now it's thinned out a lot and its not as curly as it used to be. I've been on social security disability for a few years because of my heart and the bipolar disorder. I would like to get off Coumadin but I don't know if I can, I am terrified I will have a stroke. I have no one to "keep tabs" on me, my only child (daughter) is moving far away and I don't speak to my ex husband. My family is good to me but they don't check up on me and I don't know my neighbors, they are young and busy. I'm seeing an arrhythmia specialist soon and I'll see what he says. My levels have been fluctuating wildly lately and I don't know why, I'm on a very high dose of warfarin right now. I don't understand why I can't just take aspirin. It would thin the blood and cure the headaches! I do bruise easily and fell once, but the wounds were scratches and the healed quickly. Isn't there anything else besides this drug? I also have to buy what my Medicare Part D insurance company approves. I am very low income and can't pay for anything out of pocket, my state has a plan to cover the premium and I have a low co-pay for meds. I'll post again after I go to the specialist. I feel for all of you.
