Three and a half years ago, my husband was put on Toprol, after experiencing light headedness, and a "funny feeling". We had just arrived at an altitude of 7,000 ft a couple of days before this. The doctors finally decided that he had an afibrillation problem with his heart. He was also put on Coumadin. After one year, he replaced the Coumadin with an aspirin. Still on the Toprol. I began noticing that he was having problems remembering things. After we gopt pf the high altitude, almost two years ago, he never had that "don"t feel right" discomfort again. We went to a neurologist over year ago who said his MRI and eeg were normal. Did prescribe Aricept, because he was still getting worse..couldn't remember simple day to day things, but could still play bridge and poker, etc.
In November of 2010, a friend commented that she remembered and mutual friend that took Toprol and had some bad reactions from it. I went on line, looked up the side effects and we decided to take him off the Toprol. He also felt tired all the time, and had never had high blood pressure. This med only made it lower. Today is Jan 12, 2011 and in the last three weeks, he has been able to go to the store alone. Prior to that, he could not remember how to get home, would turn the wrong way. Also, he remembered a re-run on TV that we had just seen a week prior. I always read the side effects, etc. on our medications when we receive them. I DID NOT ever see CONFUSION, TIREDNESS AND SHORT TERM MEMORY LOSS on any of that paperwork. PLEASE, BE FORWARNED
