Hello all. I am so very grateful to have found this thread as there was no where else that had information about this very painful experience. So validating to read the descriptions of this unbearable pain. I got my sunburn on Tuesday in FLorida and now am writing on Monday afternoon from my home in NJ. Thankfully my flight home was on the same Tuesday of the burn before having slept the night. As many of you described it was the next morning (wednesday) when the real nightmare began. I went to stand up from bed and was met with the surprising and excruciating pain as many of you know. I had to get right back into bed and had my husband (who frequently is not home in the morning, thank G-d he was that day) do carpool. ANyway i wanted to give over my process so far with some suggestions and hope. For one I found the explanation of Maryannudy toward the beginning of this thread to be quite informative and provided me with the words to explain to others which was very helpful. Later on Dunetraveller added to describe how the body is working hard to help us heal but in our case it was a bit haywire - after reading that I actually had a spiritual sense of being very grateful for the wonders of our G-dly designed bodies and “spoke to myself/my body” thanking it for trying to help me heal and explaining to it that it could please relax as this was not especially helpful to me right in the moment (at least from my human mind).
SOme things that helped me - I stayed home and rested. After a full day of scooting on my bottom to get to the restroom, the next day i discovered that if i used a tip-toed jogging movement i could manage to be upright for my small travels to the bathroom or kitchen and could “jog” in place like that for brief durations to get a little something done (wipe off a counter). {also a word about using the bathroom - i found it helpful but not perfect to keep my legs on a stepstool while on the toilet or to keep my legs continuously marching with exaggerated movements to keep the blood/fluids from pooling} Otherwise I mostly stayed on the couch with my back resting on the sidearm and my feet out in front of me. I tried different creams and other cooling agents to soothe and cool the ongoing heat that emanated from my shins. For me I favored - an anti itch cream with menthol, hydrocortisone and recently i ordered maximum strength ALOCANE - EMergency burn gel (i had read to stay away from ingredients ending in -caine, but in the end it worked for me). I also applied shredded potatoes, cucumber slices and milk soaked paper towels to my legs. At times i kept my legs wrapped gently in ace bandages for mild compression, to prevent surfaces that were irritating from touching my skin, and to allow me to sleep without my legs touching eachother - which added heat and also the hairs from one leg would stick out and feel prickly to the other)
I started to sleep with my legs well- elevated. After the first night of doing so my ankles became unswollen and the heat in that area no longer came back there. Each night the cooled area got a little larger and the pain place became smaller.
Accept help from others, some friends cooked dinners for my family and i asked my kids and husband for lots of favors.
Another area I want to discuss. Please do not allow yourselves to diagnose yourself or be diagnosed with other ailments. Someone mentioned a hypersensitivity issue - this is very important. My daughter when she was about 8 years old was having unexplained pain in her left ankle and would not walk on it - we were told about RSD/CRPS basically a pain disorder with neurons that are misfiring. With G-d’s help and PT we worked through it. Some things to learn is that pain includes memory - so please reteach your mind that you can be without pain. It is real pain - the pain is real but the reasons for the pain may be a trick your brain is playing out of an anticipation/an old memory. Please gently provide your painful area different sensory experiences (rub with different textures, different temperatures, different tappings/rythyms) allowing the nerves to reintegrate. Perhaps a smart PT could be helpful. Dont give in to the belief that you are damaged so that you don’t reinforce the false information to your brain. I hope I have written this in a way that is understandable and helpful.
Again just wanted to really thank everyone for their postings - it was a major source of sanity to find and read and reread this thread. I do hope others will find this when they need it. Would love to hear some feedback.
PS - today, as i said its monday following the initial burn on tuesday - my pain is much less. I can stand still for about 30 seconds before the pain starts. I can gently march my feet up and down to do a longer chore like brush my teeth and even shower. I sat with my legs down and my feet on the floor today for the first time - i had pain but was bearable to stay that way for about 5 minutes. The heat has finally dissapated a significant amount from my shins. I hope in the next day or 2 to walk outside and then maybe take a short drive with my husband int he car in case i need him to take over.
I have never really wrote to an anonymous chat like this before but felt compelled and obligated to do so out of gratitude for finding this and for the sake of any who experience this after me.
