Sulfamethoxazole Feeling Bloated, Constipation, Staff Infection, Eye Drops, Sulfameth

I had a stye/ staff infection in my right eye. It was swollen and severely hurting me. Well, my doctor put me on sulfameth and a eyedrop antibiotic. I don't mind taking the eye drops, but these pills are making me feel horrible. I am on 1 pill twice daily for 10 days. I asked the doctor and the pharmacist if this stuff causes constipation and they both said no. Well, I haven't been able to use the bathroom well since I started it. My muscles twitch, my eyes are sensitive to the sunlight, I can't go to sleep easily, I've been itching up a storm, and I have headaches. I want to just stop the medication but if I do then I will never get rid of this infection in my eye. I figured I'd stop the meds in the middle of the week. I hate feeling bloated and constipated. Has anyone else had the constipation effect?

Rebec - I've been on this druge for 5 days (for a UTI) and I am also having the bloating, constipation issues...now I'm pretty sure it's the drug. Luckily I was only supposed to be on it for 7 days, so I'll call my dr. tomorrow and see if I can stop taking it. Thanks for your posting. Hope you feel better soon.

Kswisz - I've been on sulfameth for 6 days and have severe constipation. The discomfort is as bad as I've ever had. I've also had hand cramps and twitching muscles in my arms. I've started to take a Potassium supplement which in the past has helped to reduce cramps. I only have one more day of medicine so I expect things to get better soon after that. Ken

Grannybrb - Hi- I got this med for UTI and so far only problem is I can't make a bowel movement. Have taken the laxatives and they still haven't worked. I got the 2 pills a day for 3 days and have just one left to take this evening- and then I'll be done with them. I feel like a big fat blob that 's going to explode with "stuff" and don't want that to happen anywhere but at home. This is a reasonably good med for me since it has knocked out the UTI quickly, but I just can't eliminate. Good luck to others who take it. I'm on sulfamethoxazole-TMP DS. The label says it's a substitute for bactrim -insurance won't pay for brand names and this is what I got. It's done ok except for the constipation.

Sheri1975 - Reading these replies makes me feel better. I was prescribed this drug for UTI. I took it twice a day for 5 days. I noticed i couldn't go the 2nd day on it. My stomach was in pain on the 3rd day I deiced to take a laxative, which worked, but i couldn't hardly go the next day. My last day to take it was Yesterday(Friday), it took 2 cups of coffee this morning to do anything. hoping over time I will get back to normal.
