I have an 11 year old daughter who has a history of anxiety and is suffering from emetophobia. Her doctor recently prescribed Singular for chronic non-allergy stuffiness. I asked him about the link between singular & depression and he said he had not heard anything about that. Has anyone had a child with anxiety be put on singular and is there a greater chance of depression or worry with a pre-existing condition
Zsmom - What is the cause of your daughter's chronic stuffiness? Singulair is FDA approved to treat only asthma, exercise induced bronchoconstriction, and allergic rhinitis.
Depression and anxiety ARE listed as side effects on Singulair's label. Depression was added in April 2007 and anxiousness in February 2008. I'm surprised your daughter's doctor didn't know. This spring the FDA announced it was investigating Singulair for a connection to mood/behavior changes, depression and suicide. The results of the investigation are supposed to be announced by the end of the year. Stomach upset, indigestion, nausea and vomiting are also listed as side effects on Singulair's label.
My son suffered from both anxiety and depression while taking Singulair for asthma. After I finally connected his symptoms to Singulair and stopped giving it to him, his anxiety and depression started to go away and he became a different, happier child. There is a family history of anxiety. That is why it took 5 years to make the connection between his symptoms and Singulair. For years, I assumed he was anxious due to a genetic predisposition. If anxiety and depression had been listed on Singulair's label when my son's doctor originally prescribed it, I NEVER would have given it to him.
Singulair was only tested on approximately 1500 children. You can find more information on www.parentsforsafety.org. Please share the information with your daughter's doctor. I can't understand how a doctor can prescribe a drug to a child without knowing the possible side effects listed on the label!
