Hello again! This is "Tonysmom". I posted my son's side effects of Singulair over 5 years ago. Wow, it is incredible that it has been so long - how the time flown by! Well, when I originally posted, my son was 9 yrs. old and now Tony is almost 15 yrs. and has just started high school, which he absolutely LOVES (MUCH better than middle school!).
Here is what happened. The Singulair did its damage - some of it has been permanent. The Morbid OCD took quite a while to subside. Part of the problem was that the damage from such a young child to have such nightmarish thoughts and feelings never left his mind. He was about 12 or 13 when he stopped reminding me of his countless experiences - "Mommy, remember when I thought blood was coming out of the shower instead of water" or "Mommy, remember when I would see skeletons walking out of our walls?", etc..... He had a hard time making friends or fitting in (I realize some of this is just a part of growing up but most of it was this horrible nightmare called Singulair). The nights I spent crying myself to sleep for my sweet son were endless.
I guess the reason for this follow-up is because when I read posts I am usually left wondering what ended up happening. Did everything turn out okay? What was the end result? Well, I'm here to tell you that as far as I'm concerned, my son is happy, healthy and thriving. He has friends in high school and seems to be comfortable with himself (as much as a teenager can of course).
Here is the caveat........... Tony will always have issues with his brain. He used to constantly worry about things that have no significance. For example, he would tell me that he is worrying about something that happened 8 months ago or worry that he has upset or possibly offended me, a teacher or a neighbor in some way when nothing could be further from the truth. His worrying used to dictate his life after the Singulair. I'm explaining this because I want everyone to know what has helped Tony and not only changed his life but our family's life. After MUCH research, I put Tony on a protocol of a variety of different vitamins. The MOST important being 1000 mg. of Niacin 3x's a day (3 grams total per day) - NON FLUSHING!!!! The 2nd most important supplement I give him is St. John's Wort. If we are in a hurry, he MUST take at the very least those two supplements and when we get back home he can take the rest. We have been in the car on our way to dinner and he has asked me to turn around because he forgot the Niacin - it has changed his life. I now ALWAYS keep an extra bottle Niacin in the car.
I have explained to Tony that he will need to take these supplements for the rest of his life and explained that some people have to give themselves Insulin shots daily just to stay alive - so this is really no big deal! If you would like to know all of the supplements I give to him please feel free to reply to this post and I will get you the list. There are many, many books written on Niacin and how it can cure mental illnesses, alcoholism, schizophrenia, OCD, you name it. If you go to amazon and search for books on Niacin you will be shocked at how many there are and how it can change the lives of the people you care about - it did for us!!!!
Lastly, I just want to say never give up hope and never, NEVER stop looking for answers; they are out there! Don't JUST take your doctors word for everything - they really don't know all there is to know. Be proactive and research, research, research and research some more! God Bless!
