I was prescribed Singulair after more of 2 years of hell suffering from Severe Idiopathic Urticaria. My Mother suffered from Asthma, but I never experienced any wheezing only hay fever and sneezing.Within 48 hours my widespread rash had almost disappeared. The absolute last tiny outbreaks of the rash, ceased a few days after I was operated on for Breast Cancer about 10 months after starting Singulair. There is no doubt in my mind that the Tumor cells, which can produce Leukotrienes and other inflammatory substances, were the cause of my Urticaria and only when they were removed did all inflammatory reactions totally cease.
What I suspect but cannot prove is that the Singulair, in addition to greatly dampening the Leukotriene output affecting my skin, also"cleared the fog" of inflammation under which the tumor cells were "hiding" from my immune system, and thus inhibited the cancer cells from growing. It was Grade 1 Stage1 and Multi Focal,Both my Surgeon and Oncologist were surprised that it was not more aggressive, as I was also, as my Mother and Sister both died of Breast Cancer which was beyond hope before diagnosis.
I am still trying to make sense of all of these events in my medical life, but believe that in my case, the urticaria was an early warning sign of major problems inside me. Maybe all new skin conditions should be taken very seriously. They are not always "just rashes". I am grateful that I found a Professor, a world authority on Urticaria, who after establishing that my Histimine reactions were normal and that the only 2 substances that produced allergic reactions, were Latex and Formaldahyde, had the knowledge and confidence to put me on Singulair, to which I have had absolutely no adverse side effects. I believe it may have anti-cancer effects as well as being a Leukotriene Receptor Antagonist and anti inflammatory.
To those people who complain of muscle pain and weakness, I can only say that I had those also. But had them both before and after starting the Singulair. Finally, I stopped taking STATINS and only after about16 weeks did the severe muscle pain at night start to relent. By 20 weeks, I was having reduced pain and some pain free nights. Now, 23 weeks after stopping statins,I can say that they have gone. So I would look at other culprits before blaming Singulair.. I take Clarityn and Singulair each evening and can honestly say that I feel better than ever. Good Luck to you all. C. M.
