Singulair Poor Memory, Asthma, Medication, Literature, Bad Behavior

I just wondered whether anybody has experienced any symptoms related to inability to concentrate, poor memory and general spaciness. My 6 year old son has been on Singulair for over 2 years and though his asthma is under better control than it has ever been, we have noticed that although he is very bright, he seems increasingly unable to focus or concentrate at school or home - especially since his dosage was increased a couple of months ago to 5mg. We realize that it may have nothing to do with his medication - these symptoms are never mentioned in any of the literature; so I just wondered whether anybody else had noticed them.

Cubscoutmom - My son is seven and has been experiencing the same thing. He started about a coulpe of months ago and now we have bad behavior in the classroom every day. I am done with this drug. my daughter also takes it and has very itchy skin now. really i am done. i have read enough to be convinced.

Massmomof3 - My son was evaluated by his school ate age 6 just before we stopped this medication, back in 2006. They found that he had deficiencies in his "working memory" which surprised me because he had always been an extremely focused child with an amazing memory. He had been on Singulair since age 3, but we didn't notice major problems until age 5, after his dosage was increased to 5 mg. Then gradually he developed social anxiety, behavior problems, sleep problems, stomach problems, and a serious change in demeanor. He stopped Singulair in January of 2007, when he was 6 and a half. He was recently reevaluated at age 9 and his working memory tested at above average. I would see this as a red flag. These years are extremely formative, and if your son is unlucky enough to suffer these side effects, they can be devastating. There are many alternatives for asthma treatment. I urge you to consider them, as this drug may be very dangerous for your child.

Faul306 - My 15 year old son started taking Singular less than 2 years ago, just before he started the 9th grade. He was always a very bright student making A's and B's. He grades slowly but steadily declined to the point he is barely passing. We did not make the connection to Singular until I found a very obscure reference on the internet about possible concentration problems and declining grades being a rare side effect of Singular when given to kids. He has been off Singular about a month and I can see his grades starting to improve. He never had any signs of behavior problems, depression or any of the emotional symptoms mentioned by others. I'm afraid he has lost 2 years of good high school grades because of this drug.

Piercesmom - My son was was the type who would rather read a book or do an art project at the table rather than go outside and run around. He was also a very good student. After starting Singulair he couldn't sit still or concentrate for ANYTHING!! He acted like he had ADHD. Teachers told me he was a different child. It is definately the Singulair doing this to your child.

Aldenham7 - My son was on Singulair for over 3 years. He suffered many side effects along with a low concentration span, fidgeting, agitation, inability to comprehend simple instructions due to the inability to listen to the instruction adequately in the first place. He also used to get upset and angry and easily frustrated with himself. I believe this was due to the Singulair. He has now been off Singulair for almost two months and the change is remarkable.

Fishgirl68 - This is the exact reason I was looking at this forum. My son has been on 4mg since he was 4, and now, at 6 his dose was raised to 5mg. His concentration in school has been bad, but when tested he tests high in almost all areas except concentration and speed. This got 10 times worse when the dose was raised. I think it's time to wean him off it, since so many people hear report breathing problems if it is stopped all at once. Thanks to everyone for posting their all too similar situations.
