Singulair Singlair, Daycare, Permenant, Zyrtec, Staying Home

My son was on singulair for most of his infancy (11 mos- 22 mos old) we took him off of it when I started staying home with him. He was in daycare and was having breathing issues. We would give him the singulair and Zyrtec every morning. He became a very despondent baby. He would spend the ENTIRE day in the rocking chair at the daycare. After months and months of the teachers telling me this we decided it was best I stay home with him. He came off of the singulair and things got so much better for a while, he began to interact with us and others, not fearful anymore, and slept through the night. However other things have grown to be worse, as he has been developing...every day he seems more difficult to deal with. Now, 5, he is angry, fits of tantrums and rage, can't cope with his emotions, he actually kicked me today during one of these fits. He has been peeing in his room when he is sent there because he has been punished for one of these outbursts. What are the long term after effects of Singlair? Has anyone had this experience? Could the singulair have been given to him too early and now caused some sort of permanent nero or psychiatric condition? PLEASE ADVISE!!!! This Mom is really frightened.

Flindy - I can tell you ,you are not the first mom to bring up the possibility of perm damage,i can tell you that i saw great recovery in my son,then out of the blue 6 months later another panic attack.I did get in touch with the FDA,they will only investigate the chances of perm damage if enough people report,so report to the FDA just as you have done here.visit www.parentsforsafety.org for the links good luck

Massmomof3 - My belief is that children who had neuropsychiatric side effects to Singulair may have experienced them as a kind of trauma and this can affect them in later years. Keep in mind also that angry fits are age appropriate for age 5. However, if your child is having a lot of trouble with anger and frustration, you may need to get some help or try different management techniques that take into account his inability to control these. I recommend the book "The Explosive Child" by Ross Greene. If he cannot control his outbursts it may not work to simply punish him for them, but rather try and prevent them by figuring out what triggers them. My son is much better two years off of Singulair but I feel I always need to be on the lookout for residual anxiety issues that crop up in stressful situations. Good luck.

Onetwin - Hi, yes we are experiencing the same thing!!!! Our son was put on Singulair at age 3 taken off in march of this year, he is now 6!!!! His behavior is out of control. he hits, screams, punches, yells, etc. I understand kids are kids and this age is hard for them. Our son is a loving, caring, kind, playfull child bu has these outbursts that are uncontrollable. I feel your pain and hope that we can get to the bottom of this. Could it be the Singulair??????,.

Takerofit2 - my son is expenicening so many things ....the carpet had to be taken up in his room due to him peeing on it . H e has never been a bedwetter...but is now doing that,has fear of being in his bed,trouble sleeping,anger,stay thristy,dry mouth,sometime with stomach pain,and axious thoughts. THESE came along once he started this med....but docter doesnt think it`s the med that cause this.

Mcdfam - Has anyone found out how long these side effects will last? My son had been on Singulair since he was 13 months old and we took him off of it this past aug. 09 following some very bizzare behavior. He has been more aggressive, but I never correlated it to the medications he was on, until someone told me to start reading about Singulair. I am just devastated that my son has had to go through all of this and is still having difficulty at school. He is aware that what he does is wrong, but we can't seem to break the pattern of behavior. I am at a loss. I work in the field of special education and my husband is a counselor...we are just feel completely guilty about putting him on these medications. i am so upset right now.
