So happy to find this site. I never noticed My son never had an eye tick until last month, ironically we started giving him Singular on a daily basis about the same time. My son just turned two and is has also been waking up screaming 3 times every night. Have others reported this same problem...also he is on Pulmicort too, have you read that it is linked to Glaucoma and Cataracts? Do you think that this could be causing the tick? Please HELP! I want a parent's opinion before bringing this up to the doctor...they are so quick to jump to more drugs it makes me sick! Thank you! Any other children with eye "ticks" like really quick consecutive blinks?

Zsmom - I'm happy you found us too and your son is not alone in his symptoms. Several parents have reported eye tics in children taking Singulair. Look up this post: "gbenne" September 21th 2008 10:36 AM and read the replies. Email me if it's not the right one.
Other facial tics have been reported, as well as "sniffing" tics. My son had a throat clearing tic.
Waking up screaming at night has frequently been reported on this site - along with night terrors (similar to hallucinations - a documented side effect of Singulair).
These are not minor side effects, and according to parents I have had contact with, do not go away during treatment.
Visit the Parents United for Pharmaceutical Safety and Accountability advocacy group website at www.parentsforsafety.org for comprehensive information about Singulair's side effects.
You don't mention why your son was prescribed these meds or whether he was diagnosed by a pediatrician, allergist, or pulmonologist. My son received better treatment for his asthma from an asthma/allergy specialist.

1mdklezmer - steroids will cause symptoms to heighten!
Note:
1. get a hold of the actual insert that accompanies singulair.
1.a you will be amazed to see all side effects, and when singulair is taken with other drugs (esp a steroid :pill form or via inhaler, side effects increase)
2. go online at the fda's site at www.fda.gov in the tool bar, put in singulair.
2.a again, you will be amazed!
3. find a good pulmonary doctor who is familiar with singulair and side effects.
4. this took me 10 years!
5. do not wait!

ten years ago, after being put on singulair (11/1998), symptoms came on.
a rheumatologist had concerns that singulair was the root of the cause.
the rheumatologist contacted the pulmonary doctor, and the pulmonary doctor said otherwise. no one should have to suffer, as i have suffered for 10 years.
after showing that report, my new pulmonary doctor took me off the singulair.
do not stop pursuing this, you must press on.
you can also look up research on singulair and side effects, and perhaps there is a medical university nearby where you live that can help you.

Baboo - My 4 year old son was on Singulair for about 4 months. He got a cold a couple months ago so we started Xopenex and Pulmicort breathing treatments as part of his asthma action plan. After a couple weeks of this he developed an eye tic. It was worse when watching TV/playing video games and it was one eye at a time. We took him off all medications immediately and the eye tics subsided then went away after a couple weeks. It was replaced with a throat clearing tic that is also starting to go away after a week or so. Since being off the medicine he has become a much more affectionate and happy boy and his behavior at pre-school has gotten much better. Not to mention he sleeps better and that alone is very beneficial in a child’s overall demeanor. His doctor agrees to keep him off all meds for now and I can’t agree more.

My oldest son was on singulair for most of his infancy (11 mos- 22 mos old) we took him off of it when I started staying home with him. He was in daycare and was having breathing issues. We would give him the singulair and zyrtec every morning. He became a very dispondant baby. He would spend the ENTIRE day in the rocking chair at the daycare. After months and months of the teachers telling me this we desided it was best I stay home with him. He came off of the singulair and things got so much better for a while, he began to interact with us and others, not fearful anymore, and slept through the night. However other things have grown to be worse, as he has been developing...every day he seems more difficult to deal with. Now, 5, he is angry, fits of tantrums and rage, can't cope with his emotions, he actually kicked me today during one of these fits. He has been peeing in his room when he is sent there because he has been punished for one of these outbursts. What are the long term after effects of Singlair? Has anyone had this experience? Could the singulair have been given to him too early and now caused some sort of permenant nero or pshyciatric condition? PLEASE ADVISE!!!! This Mom is really frightened.
Nhplaydates - I should note that the first message posted (eye tics) was about my youngest boy. The second message posted (about long term after effects) relates to my oldest boy.
Dhunt - My child has started Singular and been on it for aboutfive months. She is 10 years old, about a month in ahalf ago she started winking her eye continuosly and twitching the other. Went to eye doctor she has perfect vision. She forgot to take her meds for about three days and it let up quiet a bit. So i told her doctor we are taking her off of it to see if its the Singular. We will soon know.
Kara1973 - Did the tics ever stop? My son has been off singulair for 7 weeks and the behavior issues are better and the tics have lessened but are still there. We are beginning behavior therapy to help him. The neurologist is certain the is Gwalior triggered it all and that now it lingers from the heightened anxiety from the medicine. Hoping it all ends for him.
