I'm 61, a breast cancer patient, but with a good prognosis. I was put on Medrol, just another steroid since I lived in Europe, due to an acute lung infection prior to radiation. During the move back to the US the docs lost control of my dose and I was on medrol/ then prednisone for too long. Now that I'm trying to wean off (I was down to 4 mg last when all was well) and I noticed a significant increase in HAIR LOSS (I'm blond with very fine hair anyway) so I stopped the prednisone completely on my owns, thinking it was CAUSING the hair loss. When I went to my GP she said that was certainly the wrong thing to do, so I'm back on 2.5mg for about a week, and altho by body feels better, my hair is still flowing out. I try to be creative with my wispy locks, but it's a disaster. I'm also near bald spots and freak every time another one floats down my face or back. My GP tested for thyroid imbalance, but nothing there. I'll go to a dermatologist next week and may also try the cortisone drops on the scalp. What I HAVE found is an amazing website from the Women's Council for Hair Loss which is all about what you should eat and what you shouldn't eat to help with the problem. I've studied nutrition and truly believe that we are what we eat. There are lots of recommendations and things to add and things to remove from your diet. But if you're like me, I wanted to be proactive and do what I could. It certainly can't hurt. Take a look and see what you think. You have to pay $25 for the GUIDE, which is amazing, but I think it was worth it, considering we're all pouring out bucks for vitamins and supplements. What they say is that our bodies metabolize FOODS and we get all the vitamins and minerals from the food in a much more effective way that with vitamins, and I think there's a body of evidence that most of the vitamins and supplements we take don't do good at all. Anyway.....******
Good luck everyone, and when I get really freaked out about the hair loss, I try to remember that it's only hair. We'll be strong and beautiful women with more or with less.......
