I am on a relatively low dose of prednisone (10mg) but am having vision problems. After 15-30 minutes of computer work or accounting work (I am a CPA), I am unable to focus with or without glasses. My rheumatologist blames the prednisone and is trying to reduce the dosage gradually, but I have sarcoidosis which is atypical and causes great pain in all of my joints. When I reduce the dosage very much, the pain returns. The only other problem I have had is with my weight; I have gained 20 pounds so far.
L8308 - Please make sure you see an opthamologist as prednisone can cause gluacoma and also make sure they test your sugar. It can raise it.
Goforlife_55 - You're very fortunate that you have a doctor who is honest with you about the prednisone. I understand the problem you are having as you lower the dose. I was diagnosed with RA and had mod/severe symptons in my early 30s. I was on a farily high dose of Naproxen (Nsaid drug) when I saw an alarming documentary that gave me such scare. I started researching and learned so much not only about the orgin/cause of the RA but also that most western med docs don't even consider correcting the cause! All autoimmune disorders are caused by the immune system not functioning properly,so what is the answer? do everything and anything that improves immune system function and as the immune system corrects itself..... thats right - the body has an amazing capacity to heal when put in the best possible enviroment. Looking back I could definately see that a bunch of things contributed to the breakdown of my immune system, but mainly - stress, lack of nutrition absorbtion, lack of sleep in around two pregnancies. The immune system breakdown led to the RA . It's clear to me that the disorder you end up with is determined simply by what's in your genes. So with the help of an amazing ND/Chiropractor, toxin cleanout, exercise, fresh, organic (but not fanatic!) whole grains etc etc. I stayed on the Naproxen to protect my joints from any possible permanent damage, but very gradually lowered the dose......As my health improved, organs functioning properly my own body gradually took over. Within 16 months I was drug and symptom free. That was 22 years ago and I continue to be completely symptom free. There is so much much more information and accessable health promoting therapies these days. This is the first time I have written about this (I've verbally told many people) NOT ONE WESTERN MEDICAL HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS EVEN A POSSIBILITY THAT I COULD TURN THIS AROUND
The reason I'm reading about prednisone is that my DH of 33 years had been unknowingly using a potent topical corticosteroid on a cell membrane for 3 years (he was prescribed it for anul itch - "use as needed"!) The creme would temporarily relieve the itch and then actually recreate it!. The absorbency/potency was horrendous because he was putting it directly into his bloodstream, also the steroid in this particular creme is longlasting as opposed to oral pred which is short acting. I didn't know what he was using and gradually over the three years he became a totally different person (a train wreck!) - and mis-diagnosed with early onset demencia (devastating terminal prognosis) I discovered what he was using (by a lucky fluke) and since withdrawl (10 months) he has improved tremendously, but is still a long way from having his short term memory and some other subtle symptom. We are doing many natural health therapies which help to restore the damage to his liver, adrenal, blood cells and heart. This has been a nightmare and has changed our lives drastically.
I hope that my RA story lights a spark in you. Remember.... it took a very long time for your immune system to break down, so it will be a long journey back but know that just because an MD hasn't told you it can be done doesn't mean it can't!! I wish you good health.
