My first injection gave me generalized bodyache, but after the 3rd day it was absolutely wonderful, I am 49 years old, 120 pounds and 5'5, and I felt my legs extremely energized like when my knees were not injured. Then I went to the 2nd injection, when the medication was ejected in the joint, it was extremely painful. I had to have help to excert my self. I was not able to squat down. In the mornings,the posterior side of my muscles, below the knee, felt like it was shrunk down to a third. Every step was excruciating pain, especially when walking down just a few steps. Before the shot,I had pain in the lateral side of the knee. Now the pain is in the internal side of the leg, starting below my knee all the way down to my big toe. If I would have known this pain would have occurred, I would have never taken the second injection. My condition got even worse than before I ever had any injection. I am so devastated I have come to the bridge of crying and feeling crippled. I had the last shoot about two weeks ago and my legs feel very heavy when I take a step. Now I hope and pray for a miracle.
Cash058 - I have had problems with my knee for 10+ years and had Arthroscopic Surgery 6-8 years ago. Two years ago a started running and the last I was doing 4-6 miles 5 days a week. Two to three months ago my knee gave out and have been unable to run since. A friend mentioned I should look into getting the Orthovics injections. Do you have any advices for me?

Orthovisc is working very well. My experience and my physician's experience is very positive. Unfortunately, many doctors are making errors during the puncture. If you have side effects I am afraid the doctor is to blaim and not the injection. They must now how to do it. If not they provoce this kind of problems.
Cdakaren - How are your knees now? I just had injections in both knees last Thursday, going for my second set the 26th, now I'm a little concerned.
Lindastilson - How long has it been since you had the injections? How are you feeling now. I had the injections over the last 3 weeks. After the first 2 I felt great. I was walking everywhere. After the 3rd injection. I have pain in the knee again. I have a metallic taste in my throat and today, my muscles ache like I did yardwork for a week straight. I also have some anxiety. Please reply.
J5kids - I recently began a series of three orthovisc shots. After the initial shot, which did not hurt much at all, I was fine until probably the second day after. Since it was the holidays, I was on my feet quite alot and even though I did ice my knee as told to, I was not off my feet as much as possible and I started to have pain down my calf and my knee was uncomfortable even while sleeping. Getting up from sitting was increasingly hard. I went for the second shot and was told that side effects to the Orthovisc shot were extremely rare, and I was given the second shot. I am still having pain, and trouble walking, and kneeling. I was told it could take awhile to settle down. I have one more shot to go, but as of right now feel worse than before. I am hopeful this will correct, but not sure.
Any thoughts?

Maverick456 - Just want to update my comments about my shots. 2nd shot was uneventful, not painful, very easy. 3rd shot was very painful again. At this time the doctor told me that it would take about 6wks to work in and feel better. It's now 3 wks and while I do feel a bit better, I have pain when standing too long and do get some swelling. The doctor also stated that I could get the shots again but would have to wait 6mos as insurance only covers the shots every 6mos. He would give cortisone shots as needed to alleviate any pain. I don't think I will be running back for any shots unless I was in terrible pain. I continue to take Motrin as needed and keep my leg elevated when I can. Good luck to all.
Rloakes1954 - Just had my first shot of Orthvisc. it was either this or move to bilateral replacement. Literally had the shots a few hours ago, and while they do ache a bit, i don't believer the pain is going to get much worse. We are holding good thoughts as the next step is replacement ( and as someone told me - God is a much better architect that we are, so the replacement will be not quite as good as the OEM's..)
i will keep you posted if this solves the issue or not. Currently i sit a lot - gain weight a lot - and exist.. my goal is to move and begin living again.
Cyn89 - Had my first shot of Orthovisc on August 23rd, while is was not too painful, I was walking a bit bent over for about 5 hours, and still had no pain relief at all. Got the 2nd shot on September 3rd which was a bit painful but I was walking pretty good this time, but still have pain if I sit too long, and have much pain walking up and downstairs. Received my 3rd and last shot on Setember 14th. WOW, extremely painful, and the P.A. that gave me the shot stated that the third shot should not be this painful. I was in so much pain I could not stand or walk for aleast 15 to 20 minutes. I could not straighten my legs so I had to sit on the examine table with legs hanging down to the floor. P.A. came back in and stated in about a month is should start working. I grabbed my purse and had to hold onto walls just to get up to the front desk. As I hobbled to my car (and yes I had to drive home for 1 hour), I thought to myself these shots are not going to work. Well, it has been a little under three weeks and my knees seem worse than before. I am a 49 year old female by the way. P.A. stated maybe they will try cortisone if the orthovisc does not work, No Way. Cortisone wears away at the good tissues in your knees. We will see what happens. I hope other folks have better luck.
4dogs - I a having a similar experience with Orthovisc (non-avian) made from a bacteria. The first shot did not hurt at all. My knee actually felt better. The third shot was painful..but the pain subsided and it was a bit swollen. The 3rd shot was the killer. It has been 2 weeks and my pain seems worse. I can't bend my knee now. I also have shooting pains in my leg. I started the second knee (1st shot)..but now I am tempted to quit as the muscle pain in right knee is so intense.
Lindastilson - A couple days after my last post, I was admitted to the hospital with a severe infection in my knee and lower leg which was spread through up my leg and throughout my body. The pain was worse than childbirth. I could not put any weight on my leg and I had a 103 fever. I was in the hospital for a week on IV antibiotics, the same ones used for antrax. I was sent home with more of the same and continuted to take them for a few weeks until I broke out in hives. The skin of my leg is still discolored.
My doctor told me that there was no way it could have been caused by the Orthovisc bacteria injections. I don't believe him. I had synvisc avian injections in my other knee 2 years before and still to this day have had no problems with that knee. I am convinced that the Orthovisc bacteria injections are the cause of my infection.
The company that makes Orthovisc needs to be held accountable.
I would like to hear back from the others that have posted on their long term side effects.
4dogs - I was allergic to the Avian. I had one shot and it was a nightmare...much worse than knee prior to the injection. I had swelling and pain for weeks...only in the knee. This pain is in my leg and other areas. I don't have fever.
Cares - I have had cortisone injections numerous times in my knee, but nothing hurt as bad as the orthovisc injection. I had my injections 3 days ago and I am still limping and in pain. My provider said give it 3-4 days to see some relief. At the present time, I feel worse than before my injection. I am not sure whether I want to continue to get the 2nd and 3rd one.

Last two injections not bad the Nurse Practioner was great. I will admit I've had unexpected aching all over, kind of like a mild case of the flu. Ibuprofen and acetaminophen have helped and yes after wards my legs have felt a little heavy for a little while. Would I repeat in 6 months or a year. Absolutely!! I can bend with less pain and more movement . Now to work on my thigh muscles to give support to my weak knees. I recommend treatment just talk about what to expect.
