Perforated Uterus, Merina Lost Inside Me...

Has anyone else suffered from their coil ending up in their body cavity? All I can think is that the doctor that put it in said how long my cervix was, turns out it's not that long so it looks like she put the probe straight through my uterus,and the coil through as well.
They are leaving it for now whilst the consultant finds out from the company whether it's safe to leave... I just want to know what kind of statistics there are for this. I had very heavy bleeding for a week after it was inserted and serious 'period pains' but was told this was all normal and I'd be fine, they didn't even give me an appointment to get it checked for a week after that. ... more »

Mushroom22 - My god, I hope your ok. I have heard about this happening but it is said to be very rare.I would demand appointments and for something to be done for it to get removed.
Lifesabitch - Hi, had mirena inserted and thought it was great! Six months later i had alot of back pain i had an ultra sound and they found a cyst on my ovary, they told me (1 in 10 women) this happens to well i am the 1 in 10!!!!! They also found the iud had perforated my uterus. So i now have double the trouble. I am very scared i have an appointment tomorrow at same gynaecologist that inserted it to see if they can remove it, I am still in alot of pain. WISH ME LUCK

I'm in surgery on May 1st to remove mine. Keep fingers crossed it stays laparoscopy and doesn't have to be a laparotomy!

Blh - Hi, I was just in for an annual and get my Mirena IUD taken out because of constant pain,headaches,weight gain....the list goes on and on.Anyway my doctor( the same person who inserted ) could not find the strings and painfully poked and proded around with no IUD,so I was sent to get an ultrasound,they still could not find the IUD and would not tell me what was going on!!!All she said was the IUD was not where it should be and I needed to go back upsairs and see my doctor right away!Well my doctor had gone home so another doc in the same office looked at the ultrasound pics and told me I had a perorated uterus and I needed to see my doc right away.....I am still waiting to get in and see my doc,she was out of the office for 2 days.I go in on Thur. to find out whats going on.....totally freaking out here!!!!I have had symtoms of being pregnant,but all tests come back negative.....my stomach is huge and I have gained a ton of weight,I look like I am 7-8 months pregnant!!!!! What is going on??!!
I had this IUD inserted Jan. of last year,so I have had it alittle over a year.I DO NOT RECOMEND THE MERINA IUD TO ANYONE.
Seansgal55 - Wow I just had my Merina removed after about a week of having it, I started having serious cramping and sharp pains going up and down my left side. Turns out it had left the uterus and ended up behind floating around in my belly!!! I also would never recomend this to anyone!!!! :(
Zipsim - I'm a bit upset too...Had a mirene fitted in and now it's lost inside...only tho I have lots of symptoms that are not right....infcetion, vaginal discharge, random bleeding, an enlarged cervix, pelvic pain....I am going tom to some randomn clinic I am very worried....Does one have to have an operation to have it removed?!
Alexis4villa - well I got my IUD inserted on July 2007 and got pregnant with it, my doctor told me that once the baby was born they were going to take the IUD out, they didn't find it and assumed that it was out. After a month I told my doctor that I wanted to be sure that the IUD was out so they did an X-ray and unfortunately the IUD is still inside lost, now for them to remove it they need to do surgery. Since I got the IUD I been having this really bad odor and discharge. For the past 2 weeks I have been having lots of abdominal pain!!! I'm really worry I just think that I have to go to the emergency room, so they can remove it!!!!
S123 - Had mirena for over 2 years. Went to have it removed and they couldn't locate it. I had internal ultrasound and normal ultrasound done and they couldn't see it. They started asking if it had fallen out? I would have noticed! Had an xray and its in my abdomen. The thing is my doc still thinks its in my uterus. He even tried to locate it through my cervix thinking he's better than my previous doctor. ouch! I even had my xray and ultrasound pictures with me. I am now booked in to have a hysteroscopy (because doc is convinced is still in uterus) than if its not in there; he than performs 'key hole surgery'. I hate this waiting and being questioned by different 'professionals'. My doc ticked 'within 2 weeks' for my surgery. The hospital has booked me in for end for end of June! thats 3 months from when I got xray results. ridiculous!
Littlelis - i cant believe that something that is meant to help you, an doctors recommend and this sort of thing is happening to many people,my mom has just found out her coil has also been lost inside her with pain along with pregnancy feelings although is not pregnant,is the surgery risk high or low i would be very greatful if you could answer me,as i am very worrried for her.
Jennye23 - ive recently had the same issue,the string has gotten lost and my doctor cant find it i have an ultrasound booked..Im having lower pains in my back and stomach and brownish discharge and my mood changes are horrible...Im only 23 im scared about whats ganna happen..Dont recomend Mirena to annyone
Pd55555 - pd- ive recently had the copper coil removed by key hole surgery after giving birth to twin girls ! my GP fitted it 12 weeks after i gave birth to my third son telling me she used to work for the family planning clinic. on the day the coil was fitted she inquired if anyone had ever told me my uterus sat very far over to left hand side i replied no. after fitting she informed me that she had cut the strings to short and that i would have to have it removed in the hospital when it was its time for removal. she also scanned my tummy after insertion and replied that she thought that was it there pointing at what looked like nothing on the screen. since the birth of my very unplanned 4th and 5th beautiful babies i have scanned the internet to find anyone who has experienced what i have gone through to no avail. i am presently considering contacting a solicitor on the matter as my consultant who removed it informed me that it perforated my uterus from day 1 and that the doctor should of recommended another form of contraceptive until its position was confirmed. A note to anyone who has strings they cant find don't take the risk on further research you are supposed to check this thing ever month after your period to insure it has not moved out of position. i often wonder why my GP thought it would be ok to leave mine uncheckable.
Lohi13 - Let me begin by saying that it is not my place to tell anyone what they should or should not do with their bodies. The purpose of sharing my story is only to give others food for thought while they are weighing their options.
If my friend, sister, or daughter came to me and asked if they should get the Mirena, my answer would be absolutely not. I had the IUD placed 4 years ago after the birth of my daughter. My husband and I have gone back and forth on whether or not we want a third child and so Mirena was the best way to prevent anything from happening before we were ready. Insertion of the IUD was very uncomfortable but within a few days I felt fine. Within three months I no longer had a period or any of the monthly cramping that goes along with it. I have been extremely happy with it for the past 4 years and not long ago, I would have recommended it to anyone. This all changed about a week ago when I began to experience some bleeding, cramping, and green discharge. During a routine OB exam (that was conveniently scheduled around the time this all started happening) my doctor became very concerned when he could not locate the Mirena. He called for an emergency pelvic and trans-vaginal ultrasound to find out what was going on. The IUD has perforated my uterus and I will have to have surgery to have it removed. This surgery poses short term risks that involve death and long term risks that could prevent me from having more children. The real kicker to all of this is that there is a chance that I could be pregnant at the moment. The risks to myself and the potential pregnancy are unbelievable. They include ectopic pregnancy, miscarriage, premature labor, and even death. I have two beautiful children and a wonderful husband and I am terrified.
As I said before it is not my place to tell anyone what they should do but I recommend seriously considering all of your options before making a decision. Mirena works wonderful for some people, but it can change your entire life in a heart beat. It is true that every birth control has potential side effects, but some are greater than others.
Mommyof3kiddos - I too have had negative experiences with an IUD, however, I can't say I would not recommend it to others. The first time I had an IUD fitted (I believe it was the copper one), the doctor told me he did not necessarily recommend that I check the strings every month because it could make the IUD go out of position. (This was bad advice, I believe.) So, I didn't check the strongs until a year later when my husband and I decided we wanted to try to conceive another baby. I was surprised to discover that I could not feel the strings. I went to the doctor, and was told that the IUD was sideways in my uterus, and I'd have to have it surgically removed. The procedure was actually an outpatient one, in which they basically perform a D & C (like when you have a miscarriage). Everything is done vaginally, by dilating the cervex and scraping the inside of the uterus to retreive the IUD.
After giving birth to my third child, I thought, "What are the chances of something bad happening to me again?" so I decided to try another IUD. It might have been the Mirena, but I do not remember for sure (it was 5 years ago). This second time, I warned my midwife that I had nearly passed out after the first IUD fitting, and she assured me that she'd only had one patient end up with a punctured uterus, in her 30+ years of inserting IUDs. The IUD fitting was indeed extremely painful. Later that day, I realized I could not feel the IUD strings. Long story short, the IUD did puncture my uterus and was floating around in my body cavity. I had to have laporoscopic surgery to remove it a couple days later. My midwife was not able to perform the surgery of course, but she happened to be there while it was being done. She said my uterus was not only "tipped" (which is fairly common), but it was retroflexed as well. Basically, it was folded over itself like a taco, and tipped the opposite way of what is "normal."
I am sharing this so that those of you who are insisting that your doctor is at fault (if you have ended up with a misplaced IUD and/or a punctured uterus), might consider that it could just be a matter of your anatomy. The medical practitioner would not know this unless he/she had done an ultrasound prior to the IUD fitting, and I'm sure you'd have a hard time convincing them to do such an expensive procedure, in light of the fact that this is apparently such a rare condition. Having said that, I think I would caution others who have had their IUD end up sideways that they might NOT want to "try again," just in case their uterus is shaped or positioned in such a way that would make a successful IUD fitting quite difficult or impossible. For the rest of you women, I would not be so drastic as to say that you should not consider getting an IUD. In fact, I'd say if you've done your research and you feel it is a good option for you, go for it. Don't let these horror stories scare you off, however if you do decide to get an IUD, always consider whether you will have the insurance coverage, or the money, to pay for surgery in the event that something does go wrong.

Mommyof3kiddos - As I stated above (I am Mommyof3Kiddos), your practitioner is not necessarily to blame. It's possible that your uterus is shaped abnormally, or "tipped" in such a way that it made the IUD insertion more difficult. Practitioners would not know this ahead of time, so they just insert the device the typical way, which can unfortunately (in rare cases) cause the IUD to go sideways or perforate the uterus. However, if the strings were clipped too short, that could have caused the same issue. I suppose, in this later case, it would be up to you to decide if your doctor can be blamed legally. Personally, I had a great relationship with the midwife who inserted my second IUD, and since I knew that my uterus had such an odd shape/position, I simply could not blame her. It would not have been the honorable thing to do, in my particular case.
As a side note, if you feel "something in there" the IUD could be floating around in your abdomen, and not actually in your uterus. In either case, I hope they put you on antibiotics to prevent infection (in case of a uterine puncture) in the meantime. This is what they did for me as soon as they realized the IUD was not in the uterus.
If you have surgery to remove the IUD, rest assured that it is an outpatient basis and they will likely do it laporoscopically, with minimal stitches.
I would have to advise you to consider not having another IUD fitted, lest you end up like me and have a second bad experience with these devices. Just a thought....
Wajirg - I have recently experienced a horror story of my own. I had the mirena after my second child for little over a year with now problems at all. My fiancée and I decided to try for a third child when we found out I may have to have most of my cervix removed. I had been battling high risk hpv, which to those of you who don't know basicly means I am a risk for cervical cancer. My third child was born, and I again chose the mirena for my birth control methed. I did have to change gynos during my third pregnancy though so it was a different doctor who incerted my mirena. It has been thirteen months since incertion. I became very ill on a four days ago, severe vomiting, diarrhea, and unbearable stomach pains. I went to the ER and they told me I had appendicitis. After I woke up from my surgery, the nurse was talking to me about my mirena. They found it tucked in bebind my large intestine covered in fatty tizzue! Thankfully it hadnt punctured my intestines or anything else as far as they could see, but it had came through my uterus quite some time ago. The surgen said my uterus had already healed and that my history of lower abdominal cramping was probably associated with that and I needed to see my gynecologist ASAP. I do have an appointment in five days so I will update this once I know more. As of right now, I know I am facing possible pregnancy, being steral, or the need to have a hysterectomy. My doctor said they will be doing am ultrasound to see what aort of damage has been done. Needless to say, I am very worried but thankful it didnt puncture my intestines.
Dabrinah25 - I HAD THE MIRENA PUT IN A LITTLE OVER 3YEARS AGO. I WENT TO THE OB/GYN FOR MY ANNUAL AND HE REALIZED MY STRINGS WERE NOT THERE. DINCE MY PAP SMEAR CAN BACK ABNORMAL WHEN HE DID THE COLPO HE WOULD TRY AGIN TO CHECK FOR THE STRING. AGAIN THEY WERE NOT FOUND. NOW I GO FOR AN ULTRASOUND TODAY IN WHICH IM VERY NERVOUS. I HAVE ALL THE FEELING OF BEING PREGNANT BUT THE PREGNANCY TESTS COME BACK NEGATIVE. AFRAID JUST CANT WAIT UNTIL THIS IS OVER.
Andrea78 - Long story short... I had mirena after first pregnancy and had no issues. I decided it was best to have it put in after second child and was having hip pain, side aches, and after 6 months started have very long, heavy periods. I have had to have 2 U/S and the dr tried four times to remove it... the pain was far worse then any contraction i've ever had. I went in to have surgery today and it is in my uterus and the dr cant get to it. Oh and i could feel the strings and u/s showed it being in place. I'm soooo sick of this and want it out of my body!! I go back for follow up next week to figure this out.
Lynnwils - I really wish I had read this before getting the Mirena! I got mine four days ago and the pain after insertion was like labour pain! I have had two children and my husband has had a vasectomy. I got this to calm bloating and painful periods. I felt crampy since insertion for two to three days but now I have stabbing pain on the right hand side of my womb/ovarian area! No amount of painkillers is relieving this! I felt myself that this wasn't right before coming on here so I called NHS 24 and I'm waiting for them to call me back to advise me! I'm really scared of getting it removed as it was extremely painful on insertion. The doctors told me this was because I have a small cervix and I am apparently in a minority of folk, and the chances of it slipping out are nil! I wish it had now!!
Jordynsmommy - JordynsMommy- I had my iud placed after a surprising pregnancy with my first child! I thought the mirena was a smart choice seeing I didnt want anymore children for awhile! After 4 months of having the mirena i no longer could feel the strings had a dr appt and she couldnt either! Now in one week i have to have an ultrasound sound juss like everybody else has stated and im terrified of what the results will be! Considering taking a pregnancy test just to check because one week seems like a lifetime away! My personal advice would be to not get the mirena because of the worry it puts on u! I'm so scared of being pregnant with the iud or having to have the surgery or them not being able to locate it and then having to deal with that! I think i could hve gotten a different method of birth control and been worry free! -concerned
Ktmack77 - I had my Mirena IUD put in June 2012. Was sent for the follow up ultrasound to find that my uterus is tilted and sub-septate and the IUD would need to come out. OB attempted twice at 2 diff appointments and couildn't find the string. I went in for Hysteromy (or whatever its called) - no where to be found. They came to the conclusion that it must have fallen out and that was that - game over. I was NOT satisfied with this response so I went to my family doc and asked for another ultrasound. I went for that last week and the tech asked why I hadn't had an xray. I was sent for an xray and they discovered that it went through my uterine wall and is sitting in my pelvic region. I now have to go for a CT scan and have laproscopic surgery to have it removed. Did this happen to anyone else? I'm scared that I won't be able to get pregnant again. Has anyone gone through something similiar and can make me feel better about this situation??
