I had Mirena placed a little over 2 weeks ago. I have never had children. Doctor placed it for my endometriosis symptoms (long heavy periods with bad cramps every 2 weeks). Day of procedure-was just awful. I had "contraction" like pain for about 7 hours. Next day I was okay. Then for the next 7 days - I had the contraction like pains again. It normally happened in the early evening, lasting about 3-4 hours. These pains - I couldn't walk or talk through them. I barely could breath through them. Thought I was expelling it. Went in and had ultrasound which showed the IUD was in correct place and that one of my ovarian cysts was enlarged and hemorrhagic. NP gave me script for Vicodin. Pain finally became bearable for a couple of days...just regular menstrual cramps. I never thought I would be so happy to just have "bad cramps". But after the couple of days of relief, pain got worse again. Usually in afternoon or early evening. Many times seems to come after I eat or if I have to have a bowel movement. I don't know which comes first - the severe cramping that leads me to go the bathroom or if somehow having to go to the bathroom makes the cramps act up. I've taken more Advil than I've ever taken in my life. Also taking the Vicodin at night. The pain is usually my lower abdomen, sometimes one side more than the other, also into my thighs, knees, lower back, buttocks, etc. The other night, the pain went all the way down my right leg to my ankle! I stopped bleeding a few days ago. That's when I noticed a large amount of yellowish discharge. Called doctor who said it was normal - that's how Mirena works. Told me to hang in there, take Vicodin as needed, that it should "let up" within a month and total side effects should be much better by 3 months. I feel like I'm going crazy. I really want this to work, but I don't think my doctor understands what I'm going through. I cry almost daily from the severe pain. I've had to leave work early on a number of occasions because I don't want my staff to see my cry! And I have a pretty high pain tolerance so I'm not being a "baby". I have read all about Mirena and it sounds like my symptoms are NOT typical - but they are happening! I don't know how I can go on for 1-2 more months like this. And even then, will it ever go away? Has anyone else ever had so much pain after having Mirena? I just think that it has to do with the fact that my uterus is small from never giving birth and maybe because of my endometriosis too. I am thinking of calling and begging them to take it out before I lose my mind. But I do want this to work. So I'm wondering if anyone has gone through something similar and can tell me that it DOES get better. I will then try to stick it out but I just don't know how much longer.
