I have had two IUD's in the last 7 years. I had no adverse side effects with my first device. No periods for 5 years, no pregnancies. I loved it so much I got another when my first expired. All was good for about 2 years. Then I started to suffer from pain in my left lower abdomen, for several months. In May 2012 I went to the ER. Upon inter-vaginal ultrasound investigation it was discovered the my Mirena IUD device had migrated and lodged into my uterine wall. The hospital informed me that , due to the fact that an OBGYN doctor had inserted the device they would prefer that I return to that doctor to have it removed. I had to wait 28 hrs after my ER visit to have my doctor attempt for over 20 mins to remove the device. He stated that I might have to have surgery to remove it. Then all of the sudden he ripped the Mirena from my uterine wall. I let out a scream. He showed me the device. It had a chunk of my flesh on the left tip of it. I have existing pain in that location today. I asked about infertility or damage to my uterus. The doctor stated that "we would just have to see" like it was no concern or big deal. I told him that we have been talking about removing the device in 2013 to try for another child. He said "get busy trying to get pregnant and come back for testing if it does not happen within a few months. It is now Nov 2012 and we are still not pregnant! I cannot afford to go out of pocket while my insurance coverage is in limbo. I have gained excessive weight (30 lbs) in the last 5 months. I feel it is in relation to this event, as I am otherwise healthy and had maintained a 20% BMI and a healthy 140 lbs for many years. Please let me know if you have any thoughts on my situation.
