This is really interesting to read and I'm so surprised because I have only had an amazing experience with the Mirena. I had my Mirena replaced today after having my last one for 5 years. I never experienced weight gain, bad skin/acne, hair loss or depression. The insertion was quite painful but the pain subsided within 24 hours. And within 3 to 4 months I never had to deal with another period or PMS, mood swings, etc. I have recommended it to anyone and everyone who is considering it. I'm sorry to hear that so many women have had a bad experience with this product but generally what happens is people's complaints and bad experiences are aired more than good experiences with a product, as people that are satisfied will just get on with life. It obviously depends on the individual and every person responds differently to a foreign body being inserted, but I would also like to post my experience with the Mirena into this forum as most of the posts above sound like horror stories whereas i have had a great experience! If i was considering the Mirena insertion and read this blog I'm not sure if I would have gone through with it! So i hope this serves the purpose of restoring some faith in a product that does work well for some people.

Jarnj3 - Very nice to read this. I have begun to think I'm in a very small minority. I had mine placed in March - after a year where a cryoblation did not stop the excessive bleeding I've been experiencing. I am 48 - never had children - and knew I wasn't going to. Very disappointed in the cryoblation - the bleeding was slightly reduced - but then came back with a full vengeance. The doctor felt that the IUD would get me to menopause. If this doesn't work - then the only alternative I have is a hysterectomy. I really don't want to have to do that. My issues seems to be that I have about 10 fibroids in the uterus. I haven't seen many side effects - other than to some light-headedness. But I have tended to suffer from vertigo throughout the years. So far I am on period #2 since the implantation. First one lasted 3 weeks. I am on day 14 of this second period. I still have a lot of clotting (sorry if this is TMI).

Treestans - I cant deny that is refreshing to see something positive about this product. I havn't noticed any of the side effects mentioned on this site, with exception of hair loss. I'm not sure what is causing the hair loss, but it located in one spot in the center of my head. I've been told this is a stress spot and I am taking steps to reduce stress to see if that makes a difference. My cycles are barely there and whe they are, they are very light; but I have experienced some cramping every month. I've been on the Mirena since October of 2008. Thanks for taking the time to give a positive response.

Darjher777 - Thank you for sharing. I am glad to hear something positive. I had my Mirena put in about 9 days ago. Initially, I did have a lot of cramping and bloating in my abdomen which was accompanied by one sharp pain that curled my toes and some lower back pain. The cramping has subsided thank God. I started looking up side effects because my doctor only gave me the pamphlet. I have always battled with my weight and acne so this was a big turn off for me. Anyway, I am 48 years old and probably menopausal so I thought this might be a good option for me because of the progesterone hormone, which I have read diminishes when we are older. I am also a long time user of the IUD. I could never tolerate the pill because of the side effects, etc...I did have a dermoid cyst on both of my ovaries, which I had to have removed with two different surgeries. I'm not sure if this is related to the IUD or not. My previous IUD's were not Mirena. I did have to remove my last IUD because of persistent bleeding after a couple of years. Birth control can be so frustrating. There are side-effects to everything. I am now considering having a tubal ligation. I hope this IUD works for me. I am to old to get pregnant again. Thank you for sharing positive thoughts.

Didee - Hi I am sitting here in the hospital crying as I just read some of the posts, then I read yours and now I am very confused, I drove myself to hospital Monday bleeding very badly for last three days, had mine inserted yesterday, I am 53 going through what they think is pre menopause, I have been bleeding excessively and have had blood clotting for almost 6 months, this is a first step to see how it goes the Gyno said, if I am not hapy they will consider a hysterectomy.I don't know what to expect but hope someone my age who has used this for the same reason can put some light on this for me, I am extremely worried about gaining weight. DD

Anjadaz - I've been thinking of getting a mirena also, and I must say all the negatives here have scared the hell out of me. My sister and a friend both have had a mirena for a couple of years and they have never had any of these terrible side-effects... I guess we are all different and when things are good there's no need to get on these websites.. So thankyou for posting some positives..
