I'm 34 and my children are 3 and 5 years old. I had my Mirena coil fitted on 12 Sept 2007, so have now had it just over a year. During that time, I've had bouts of intense abdominal pain, almost constant vaginal discharge, bleeding after exercise or sex and a curious sensation in the region of the uterus that feels like when a baby moves inside you. My doctor dismisses all my symptoms as being nothing at all to do with the coil, but having read the other posts on this site I'm not so sure....
I'm also constantly exhausted and get spots. I am a coward though, and having the coil fitted was so excruciatingly painful that I'm not sure I can face having it taken out so (relatively) soon. I'm off to see the female GP at my practice next week so it will be interesting to hear her take on things.
Red1964 - I had that same sensation of movement in my uterus...it was really strange. A few others here have as well....still don't know why....but when the Mirena came out, it went away, too. Take a look at Drugs.com/pro and look up Mirena...look at the professional monograph...you will see that the professional advisory lists many more side effects than the normal patient info. My experience in getting it removed was that it was less painful than having a pap smear...so hopefully you will not have a problem, either, if you decide to get it removed. I sure am glad I did. My cystic acne is gone, too...never had that prior to the Mirena.
Kjohannesen - It is truly frustrating when we know that the mirena has to be to blame for all or most of our symptoms that were not there before the device - but our drs insist it is not the Mirena - truly makes you feel like your crazy - but lets face it - we can't all be crazy! I feel like a hypochondriac since I had this thing inserted and cannot wait to be rid of it!
Cocopuff - I just wanted to say that if you want to get it removed, DO IT !! Don't worry about the pain. If there's a chance of it helping your symptoms you should at least consider it. In my experience the actual removal didn't hurt at all (the doctor made me cough and she pulled it out - no pain). The pain I DID get was because the doctor used the biggest speculum known to man to open me up, plus being someone who has barely had sex, and being sore from the severe discharge I had PLUS the coil had repositioned itself (uncomfortable) didn't help - The doctor ended up using the smallest speculum after I'd ran to the toilets crying my eyes out. The symptoms I had like yours went away after removal but a few weeks down the line came back again and have never gone completely away. I'd had the non-hormonal coil (nova) and I only had it in for 3 months. My GP has never believed me, and my negative test results only solidified his stance. The nurse who took my swabs for my GP was shocked at how banged-up my insides were. If the recent treatment he gave me doesnt work then I'm taking myself to a qualified gynaecologist - this may be something you want to try too, because male doctors who are not specialists in this field see things like this as trivial and won't make an effort.
Beckihogarth - Im so glad i read this post, i have had pretty much identical symptons, the bizarre feeling of a baby moving, lower back pain, constant and i mean consant discharge ranging from normal in colour ( rarely ) to watery orange to a disgustingly embarrassing brown colour, watery blood loss after intercourse, spots, the list goes on. My doctor constantly reassures me its normal but i certainly dont feel normal.Its embarrassing, my sex life is taking a nose dive because of the discomfort and embarassment. My doctor constantly reassures me its normal and probably nothing to do with the coil but reading this i beg to differ, he has advised me not to take it out on the grounds that ' i'm embarrassed by the discharge' making me feel like i shoudl be honoured to have the damn thing. I have now decided to go and have it removed and hopefully things may return to normal.
Chrissy14 - Hi. I'm a 36yr old mum of two boys aged 14 & 12 yrs. I had the mirena fitted 1 1/2 years ago. BIG MISTAKE!! For the last year and a half I bleed for 3 weeks out of 4. I have had hard cysts, which luckily have gone on there own. I had very heavy bleeding at months 7 & 8 after having the mirena inserted. So heavy, I felt nauseous and faint the next day. Dr said it was not normal, but nothing they could do, and they could not tell me why it was happening. Am experencing lots of yellow/green discharge, so much so that it comes off the loo paper once wiped. ewwww. test show up neg. got referred to a gyno specialist after heavy bleeding, he did not know why it was happening and offed no explanation. He is booking me in for a vaginal hysterectomy. Rather confused as I am only 36. Has anyone elese had such heavy bleeding after having the mirena in for 7 to 8 months? or bleeding for so many weeks? crikey I wish someone had some answers.....
Cocopuff - I've been reading back on the replies posted since October 08, and I am so infuriated to hear that the doctors are still telling us "it's normal" to even the severest of symptoms we complain of. If the coil is causing side effects bad enough to warrant hysterectomies at the most extreme, then we should be warned of those dangers before we agree to have them inserted, or they shouldn't be available at all! Hopefully more tests will be carried out on the coild on offer, and more patient feedback will be taken so that they can see the bigger picture. I would NEVER recommend any type of coil to any woman.
Loo1234kids - Having had a copper coil in the past my GP offered me the mirean coil due to heavy periods and bad PMT, Must say i didnt find it painful gettng fitted (i do have 4 children tho and they say easier to fit more children you have had) I havent had a period since i had it fitted which is now 3mths
I do get bad period pains without the period???? and very watery dshcharge most of the time but have found this better then the ranging 2 wk PMT. Im not sure if i like having no periods, having 4 children i get slightly concerned when i have no period!!! but ok and no other problems.
Leinani - Oh my goodness I am so glad I found this post. I have been having my period constantly... I will get a break of 4-7 days, and if it is not my period, I am having the orange liquid leaking from me. Feeling the sensation of a baby moving inside me too and the back pain also. I thought I was going nuts. Cystic acne... the works. I've had the Mirena for 2-1/2 years but the symptoms just started creeping up on me one by one 8 months ago and have started peaking over the last month.
Tj - Tj/ my concerns, cant go to bath as did before bout three weeks now. This is weight gain problem n im on metformin! Ive never used this method of bcontrol n im not feeling good.about it.
2boysmummy - Hi I'm new to this I got the mirena fitted 2 months ago I have had constant bleedin just 2 wks of not bleedin I have bk and stomach cramps all the time, I always need the toilet for a wee , and over the past week I've been gettin movement in ma stomach like when I was havin a baby, I'm 27 and have a 6yr old and a 16 mth old I had a swab done last wk the doc rang me 2day and said I don't have an infection but there is something brewin in there and he can't tell me what it is he just wants to give me antibiotics , can any1 help or has seen a doctor and shed abit more light on wot is is I am exeriencin I have also been feelin lightheaded and sick
Tylerrankin1234 - I've had mirena for 4 months. My past period that just ended lasted 2 weeks. I got cramps right at the very end of my period and it started to get sore there. I've ha constant vaginal discharge and it's like a light yellow on colour and thicker and more mucous-ey than normal. The first couple months of mirena, I had horrible mood swings/depression. I felt like i was going crazy and I wasn't myself. I just a few days ago felt the sensation of the first baby movements. I've had lower back pains (I thought that was caused from me just having a baby and the inner abdominal muscle that wraps around to your back was still weak. Apparently not). I've had to pee quite frequently. I've become slightly dizzy or nauseated at times. I have been fatigued or just have no motivation to do things. I thought some of these symptoms were caused by various different things, but in reading this I see that they aren't. Thanks guys! I'm so glad I read your posts! I feel better because I was starting to think that my symptoms were caused from something more severe like PID or something. I feel 100% better!!!
Rozzy123 - Rozzy; I'm so shocked I thought it was me! I've had it for 3 years now and been getting everything you ladies have said I thought I was going mad....even something growing inside me....I'm just a bit worried as to what my family planning clinic will say when I go down to ask for it to be removed, I don't feel at all happy with the coil any more and I'm have not been myself for ages....and if I get one more water infection I will scream.....so off to them tomorrow wish me luck..... :) roz
Justmetime - hi girls im 25 and a mum of two ive had my mirena for 8 weeks now due to heavy periods .firstly it killed having it fitted according to the nurse its cause my womb its tittled far back ? and the pain lasted for two weeks after.now my first period lasted about ten days and the one since was about 7 very painful aswell althow not to heavy so thats good :) but ive had lots of spots and i thought i gained weigh as i couldnt get into my jeans but now i can i think its fluid retention.i always need to pee asif im pregnant and also have the weird baby movements and back ache bad ! and white discharge ive never needed to use panty liners but now i cant go without as i just feel uncomfortable . ive also noticed i bleed after i knock myself for example i fell down the stairs few wks ago and it made me bleed the doc didnt seem concerened thow ..and then the other night i miss judged the height of the garden chair and sat down realy awkwarly that also made me bleed strange !! i have bad mood swings and im more tierd than usual .hope this helps x
