Spasms and Lipidor
Posted over a year ago
I am on 10 mg of lipitor daily and I am experiencing (on occasion) a tightening or spasm on the left side at my ribs. I do have scoliosis in the lumbar of my back but after an operation I am in very good shape for my 71 years. Is it possible that lipitor is causing my spasms?

Bobby - June, Muscle spasms is a frequent complaint with any statin drug. In human biology, cholesterol's job is "Director of Bodily Maintainance" and serves many biological roles in maintaining health. Maintaining muscle cell integrity and nerve funtion is just one of cholesterol's jobs, hence the spasms when Lipitor enters the picture and cuts back LDL. The Honolulu Heart study showed us that folks in the 70-90 age bracket live longer and healthier lives with higher cholesterol. The repairs that cholesterol makes is greatly needed in this age bracket.
Swedish - I take for granted that you mean a cholesterol lowering drug called - Lipitor - although it says something else - Lipidor.
I have never taken statins - hardly any other medications either, but I can remember that my mother and a close friend had something similar to what you describe when they were on another statin Zocor (=Simvastatin).
All statins have similar side effects.
They can come soon - or after many years.
Most people don“t have to worry about their cholesterol levels. There are doctors/scientists who have a completely different opinion about the cholesterol issue.

I would have liked to give you a few www-adresses, but if I do - they will just be eraced and you will see ******.
Therefore Google the titles of the different books and the names of the writers. That way you may find the addresses.
Also Google "Stopped our statins" - a very informative site. Under "print articles" you will find an interesting article from Weston Price Foundation.
The best thing you can do for yourself and others is to "educate" yourself. Look for information in many different places and in books but always remember to look who is "behind" it - could be a pharmaceutical company. l
