Lipitor Plantar Foot Pain, Lepitor, Dangerous Drug, Cholesterol, Metabolic Pathway
Posted over a year ago
I am wondering if the plantar foot pain that my husband is suffering for 6 months could be from lipitor that he is taking for several years now. Has anyone have this problem?
Bobby - It could be considering the BROAD RANGE of neuromuscular side effects from cholesterol lowering drugs. Since Lipitor blocks the mevalonate metabolic pathway in the liver, side effects range from muscle pain and weakness, memory problems, sexual dysfunction, tendonitis, moodiness, depression, you name it. Anything that depends on this metabolic pathway can suffer. Its like the Domino effect. You knock over one enzyme and it knocks over 75 more. Lipitor inhibits the HMG-coA enzyme that our bodies rely upon to make LDL, CoQ10, and dolichols. When those three dominos fall, they knock over an undetermined number of metabolic processes including our steroid hormones. Hence one of the reasons some people on statins appear to age quickly. Because they are.
Ant - This pain could be caused by Lipitor, and I am no fan of Lipitor. I believe I have had multiple muscle problems from the drug.
However I have also had plantar fascitis two years before taking Lipitor. It was almost certainly due to walking barefoot on hardwood floors and also on tile. I was also on my feet all day on cement floors. My feet took a hammering. Orthotics provided incredible relief. Although I did go on to have physical therapy and then had "shockwave" ultrasound treatment because there was also a bone spur.
Obviously he can check by reducing then eliminating the Lipitor. Personally, I would try wearing shoes with good arch support from the minute of rising in the morning to the last minute before he gets into bed: and getting an assessment from a podiatrist.
Alixflorida - I too have been having foot "cramping" while on lipitor. I also have minor leg cramps. I take 200mg of coq10 but only after taking a baby aspirin too, did I have some relief of the cramping. I am going to my dr. tomorrow to see if I can cut back or go on another statin to see if that is the cause of my foot cramping.
Sam1295 - Yes, I was diagnosted by a podiatrist with plantars fasitis. I blamed it on the walking program I'd been on for 3 months, but now in reading everything on this site I'm thinking it could be the Lipitor I've been on for some time now. I recently was diagnosted with stage 1 on kidney failure. Who knows what caused that? Could it be from Lipitor? Let me know if you suffer from this condition. I'm just starting to research and would apprecitate any info.
Roaeja - When you are out and about, you may see old men hobbling about. Stop and
ask them if they are on Lipitor? Ask them if their feet feel like it is on fire. Do they
walk like every step they take is painful and the bottom of their sole's feel like
they are walking on a bed of hot coals? Then it is the Lipitor that is attacking the
plantar muscle, making it difficult to walk and put all your weight on your feet. You
walk with weight on your toe's and heal, never the souls of your feel. The moment
I got off of Lipitor, the problem started going away. Now I don't hobble, I walk like
a man and enjoy every step I take. I use Zetia for my cholesterol.
