New to Lamictal

I have suffered with Chronic Recurring Depression, Bi-Polar and SADS for most of my 40 years. Needless to say I have been on a variety of meds and combinations of meds. If there is a slight possibility of a side effect, I seem to get it. Most drugs work only short term for me then it is back to the drawing board. I am now on Lithium, but my DR. wants to wean me off and put me on Lamictal. I could use some sound advise based on experience and not medical hypothesis. Please help!

Royston - Hi there.Im new to this site however reading your post seems to strike a chord with my own up and down journey to being diagnosed with Bipolar 2-maybe Bipolar 1.I am 41 and have recently been diagnosed with bipolar.Its been a journey which started when i was 25 and was prescribed Prozac-a life changing experience.........!However i never truly felt relaxed inwardly and realise now that i was still in an over aroused state a lot of the time.This was still better than feeling the dark cloud of depression that had reigned over my brain for what seemed like a lifetime......Its sad how hindsight gives you a deeper understanding but hey better late than never!!Recently i started taking Lamotrigine (Lamictal) and can only say that it has been superb-other than some quite strong side effects.These have included a stiff neck-which is still a concern, and blurry vision-which passed after 2 weeks.I have had 3 migraines which now have faded down to headaches every other day but seem to be lessening in strength and longevity.Also i have a strange numbness in my right foot which seems to be worse in the evening-it almost feels like i have restless leg!!All these things though upon research are relatively common and do decrease over time.Im happy putting up with these short term as the contented feeling i have now is something i have never felt in my adult life.Gone is the confusion i used to have clouding my thought process.Laughter is flowing freely and the manic highs and lows are gradually levelling off.I currently take 50mg in the morning and 50mg in the evening.Im happy to keep going up as per my GP's advice in conjunction with my Psychiatrist.Compared to Lithium-which i haven't taken its a non weight gainer.Compared to Quitiapin-which i did try-its a non weight gainer and doesnt make you feel drowsy.Maybe for me this is the drug finally to resolve my mental illness and life affliction.Hopefully you will find this of use and get the same result!!I wish you all the best and by all means feel free to e mail me at moiston@hotmail.com to chat.Having mental illness is hugely misunderstood and a very lonely place to exist-i know and so must you.Your not alone though.Each day at a time.Sometimes each decision and hour at a time.There is light at the end though.I wish you peace :o)
