According to my daughter's doctor if you have this reaction to lactaid products, you are not lactose intolerant, you are lactose ALLERGIC. Which is what causes the severe reaction.

Lactaid OK but watch the expiration date
I have now successfully used lactaid on a number of pizza nights using between 6 to 8 pills taken right before a meal. But I think that using a fresh bottle makes a big difference, don't count on them after the expiration date. -
TABLETS OR CAPLETS

Responding to Trjgood. It only happened to me when I took the lactaid pill. For some reason, I'm ok with lactaid milk. I did a little research on the ingredients of the pill versus the milk and it's a different enzyme used in the milk.
