I had Kenalog (Aristocort) injection in May of 2009. My daughter noticed the huge indent in my behind and asked me about it. I finally figured out it was from the injection in May. It takes four or five months for the indent and pain to be noticed. The doctor (GP on call) had the nurse give me the shot for a cold and sinus. I was not warned of any side effects or told the medicine was different from previous injections given by my General Doctor for the cold sinus. (He had my medical records to review) My life has been miserable since May. I have experienced extreme fatigue, missed periods, extreme hormonal imbalance as I had controlled thyriod disorder and autoimmune issues, depression, anxiety, mood swings, knee problems, all over muscle pain and pain in the area of the indent and down my leg. I have not been able to function physically and mentally since this injection. This is a bad drug that is disfiguring and impairing people. The injection must be given deep into the muscle to avoid athrophy and only a skilled doctor should give the injection when all other treatments have been exhausted and the persons health is at risk. Doctors are using this medicine like candy and this medicine should only be used in life threatening situations and the patient should be informed of side effects and sign a consent. Hoboflavor - About five years ago for some unknown reason til this day my toes would swell and feet would hurt so bad I could not walk normally. I went to the VA hospital in Dallas and they gave me a 40mg Kenalog injection. The swelling subsided temporarily. Since then I have had about six of these injections with two directly into my toe joints. Now I live with a rash ( where a man would prefer not to have a rash), heart racing, mood swings, joint pain and fatigue. I still have swollen toes and hurting feet. The Kenalog just added to my problems. I now refuse these steroid injections.

Melsmith928 - Last May of 2009 I was diagnosed with tonsilitis at a local Primed, and received a shot of Kenalog in my rear. They absolutely did NOT warn me that there could be a break down in the tissue as a result. I was not given a choice, they just came in with the syringe, told me what they were doing, and that was it. Over the next few months I formed a grotesque quarter-sized atrophy in the injection site. I've been trying to get in with a plastic surgeon to see about fixing it, and finally got an appointment only to find out that insurance is probably not going to cover the costs of fixing it. I am infuriated. I can't believe I have to fork out money to fix something that was caused by a "medical provider."
I will gladly take part in any class action suit you all may file.
Mentalcompass - I just had this shot Friday. I had not idea what I was getting. I don't even know how much he gave me. I've had depression and night sweats, I feel "off" in the head. That's not me at all. I'm scared. I had a sinus infection, still do, third one in three months, and I told the ENT that I didn't want Prednisone because it made my joints swell. He offered this is a better alternative. Of course now I have to wait out the effects since it's not a pill I can just stop. I'm so mad. He also put me on Avelox, even though I told him I had reactions with Levaquin, which is also the same drug as Avelox. Time for a new doc. I am prone to anxiety and mood swings. Now I'm stuck with this and I'm so angry. I was making a big push to have a second child, I'm 40. Now I find that this messes up your hormones, which is probably why I'm depressed and anxious, my hormones. No one is saying how long this lasts. Do you know? I'm freaked out here.
Rlindahz - I went last year to see my family doctor for a gaglion cyst and he injected my wrist with kenalog. After a few weeks I noticed my wrist had a huge discoloration. I couldnt figure out were this was coming from. It has gotten worse through out the months. It has even gone up my arm and so now I have a huge white mark on my arm. It is super sensitive too. I cant even take hot showers, get into hot tubs, be out on the sun too long because it gets red and begins to burn. When I touch it my skin is so sensitive. I contacted an attorney and he advised me I had to case because the dr didnt have a resposibility to tell me about small risks. Just major deathly ones. I have to live with this for the rest of my life. I can even give my son a warm bath because it hurts my wrist. Any ideas?? Im thinking of contacting another attorney.
Cakin - I had a Kenalogg shot last year in July of 2009 for sever eczema. I was fed up with the cracked, bleeding, infected skin and wanted them to do something more serious than light treatment. I said I didn't care what it was I just wanted the eczema gone. If I'd known the side effects I'm not piecing together I would have asked to try something more moderate. I noticed a small atrophy soon after and thought it was just a small fungus or ringworn or something. I used natural treatments for awhile, and it continued to get bigger. Finally I went back to the doctor to see if I'd gotten a flesh-eating virus or something. He said it was"normal" and would repair itself with time. He acted kind of squirly and got out a dermatology textbook to show me how it's "normal" and didn't charge me for the appointment. He sent me home with samples of Protopic ointment (a non steroidal eczema creme) to apply to the atrophy, like that's gonna fix it! The atrophy has gotten bigger and is now around the size of a silver dollar and 1/2 inch deep--eaten through all of the fat on my butt. (Will it eat through muscle too?) I started having insane hormone imbalances and was getting my period twice a month most months but sometimes not at all. Thought it was the birth control so I quit taking it, but I'm not sure. Also, I now have acne for the first time in my life. Is that class action suit still happening? What can I do to get rid of this hole? Is it going to effect my ability to have kids? I'm 24 and really scared. Not to mention it's putting a cramp in my bikini season. Please email me with any info. cakin@aum.edu.

-With the exception of skin atrophy, none of the above are side effects from a steroid injection.

-Kenalog is a great drug that helps and heals thousands of people. As with anything, there is a risk, and it is unfortunate that you seem to be someone with the skin reaction.

Susans - This post is to bamajfs, Kenalog does not "heal" anything. It only suppresses symptoms for a while. I wonder if bamajfs had a massive atrophy wether he/she would still think it was such a "great" drug. I very much doubt it. Lets not be too complacent eh
Grahamjohn - Yes sadly the comments from Bamajfs is just 1 example of the ignorance and disillusionment of people who are misinformed about Kenalog and it's side effects.
It is indeed a bad drug that has many nasty side effects.
It is disturbing when this drug is being advertised as being good and even more disturbing is the fact that this advert simply promotes more misery for more people
Ecristofaro - I also have an indent on my shoulder due to a kenalog shot that I was given for poison ivy. When I went back to the docter he said it has nothing to due with the shot he gave me.I went to another Dr who was a friend of the family and he told me exactly what it was.Its called CUTANEOUS/LIPO ATROPHY from steriod injection.I now am very upset that the Dr is trying to lie to me..........What can we do? Elle
Paulspencer - I had a large amount of scar tissue following surgery which only came back with repeated attempts to reove it surgically. Kenalog first softened then reduced the scar tissue without the need for any other intervention.
In short I had the kenalog injections to get the atrophy effects people on here have described. It has worked as expected and made a big positive difference to my life. I would recomend it to anyone wanting to reduce scar tissue which I understand is it's main use.
Banning this drug would affect the people who have had positive results from it.
Kbn424 - To Paulspencer, The drug Kenalog (Aristocort brand) should be used only when medically necessary, not just pushed on people with runny noses. I am happy that you got a positive result with this drug being used to reduce a raised keliod scar. Imagine paying $1,500 to get a huge crater filled because of a medicine you had no choice about receiving. There are children who get huge craters in their faces and arms because a Doctor has misused this dangerous drug.
What is so horrible is that most all doctors who make this mistake are aware of the atropy side effect and still make the choice for the patient and scar them. You also felt your life was affected by your scar. I would also recommend it to reduce scar tissue but not to just mask allergy symptoms for a short while. This scaring and the physical, mental side effects are simply not woth it. Every patient should be informed and be able to make decisions about their individual heathcare.
