Confusion Caused Bt Fentanyl Patches

My father who is 78, is currently using Fentanyl patches for back treatment (he has arachnoiditis from spinal surgery in the 1970s)
The patches have been successful to date, but he has of late been suffering from slight confusion (mixing up words, sounding as if he has had a slight stroke,getting names incorrect).
Are these effects due to the side effects of Fentanyl patches, or are they age related? (possible dementia?)
These eymtoms have come on of late,any feedback from you would be greatly appreciated.
