I took doxycycline hyclate because of a skin condition and had taken it once before with no problems. Well - that was in the winter months. I took it 2 days before we went on vacation and I was in the sun for a couple of hours and it felts like I had a severe sunburn (which I didn't because I had been in the sun a lot and have tanned). My face was very sensitive to the sun and wind, my hands tingled and when I put them in water to wash dishes they hurt and tingled. My feet also did the same. The wind also aggravated my face and hands they were so sensitive. I found out that this drug is very photosensitive and I'm just wondering how long these symptoms will last? Just got back from vacation so I'll stay out of the sun but my hands still ache when I wash them. Would never take this medication again. I'm surprised they even prescribe it.
Kfbquestions - I'm so glad to know I'm not alone with the side effects of Doxy! After reading many of these posts, I realize it could be much worse. I'm having the similar tingling feeling in my hands (mostly my ring finger and pinky but it feels like the entire hand). I have to believe it's from taking 10 days of this medication, 100 MG 2X a day. I've been off it now for about 2 weeks and I noticed the tingling a day after I stopped taking the medication and it still has not gone away. Before taking this medication, I never had any such feeling in my hands or my feet.
What I really want to know....is has the tingling gone away for your or is it still with you?? Thanks is advance for sharing your info... it does help to know you're not alone with these strange side effects/adverse reactions.
I agree with you, I will never take this medication again. In my case, I took it as a preventative measure to ward off the chance of getting any infection from a minor non-invasive procedure I had done a few weeks ago, then the doctor said I probably didnt even need to take it. I'm surprised they prescribe it to so many people for such an array of issues...they may need to be a little more selective in prescribing this antibiotic!
Lenore5 - I only took this med for 5 days then got the results I didn't have lyme. They told me to finish the does but it made me miserable. My skin felt like it was on fire so I just threw it away. It's been super hot and I have not been able to handle it. I thought maybe it was a weight or age thing but the other day I sat by a friends pool for less than an hour and got a burn that caused hives and again was out i the sun today and the hives have spread and my skin was on fire. I don't usually use sunscreen but today I wore spf 45 and still bured followed by hives. How long does this last?!!
Cjpryor01 - I got the same thing, I was not very careful and went out in the (Texas) sun a lot. My hands have been sunburnt along the insides of my index fingers and my first two knuckles are really red. My hands have been tingly since they got burnt so I'm glad I'm not the only one with tingly hands. I also got a little sunburnt on the top of my back and I think I have hives there but they don't itch.
I still have another 5 months of the dioxycyclene to go!!!
Cj1218 - I too am on doxycyline for acne. Been on it about a month. Was out in the sun got extremely burnt. I have the firey hot skin and tingling hands and its killing me. I currently hate my hands! I've been using ice packs or running them under cold water. I'm tempted to quit using this because I'm a mess.
Porchia - I have taken doxycycline many times for chronic bronchitis and never have had any problems. I am on it for a month at a time, a few times a year. I got sunburned this weekend and have been in such pain with tingling in my hands. It's so painful to have water touch them. Does anyone know how long it will last?
Mollie00 - This is the first time I have taken this medication. I am taking it for a bad sinus infection. I noticed the tingling in my hands and feet today when I took my son to the waterpark. It only happens when I touch water or feel a breeze. I have also noticed that I just cannot stand being in the sun. My skin feels like it is on fire even though I don't have a sunburn. I am planning on calling my docor to see if I need to continue taking the medication since it is for an infection. If I don't finish the meds, the infection may come back.
Creamsicle-cattys - Michele- This is happening to me right now!!! I have just completed a 1 month course of Doxy for Lyme (had the bulls-eye, won the meds!). I usually have a strong sun tolerance, but early on, I was sitting outside and my arms felt like I was being pricked by hundreds of needles. Sure enough, I developed a severe, blistered burn (1st time, ever). A few days later, my hands and toes started to tingle and burn. Blisters have been erupting on them and continue to do so, even having stopped the antibiotic. Driving, my left arm burns right through the tinted windows and I noticed that the burn isn't present where I wear my ring. My Dr. told me that the burns on the hands were from holding the steering wheel!
Long story, short: WEAR SUNSCREEN, even after completing your medications!!! Wear long-sleeved shirts, sunglasses, shoes- it is important! While the rx is great, it DOES carry some serious side-effects and it's YOUR responsibility to protect yourself!
Nobody has been able to tell me when this horrible itching, blistering and burn-pain will cease, but I do know that I'm STILL EXTREMELY PHOTOSENSITIVE and miserable... hopefully, it's knocked off the Lyme. If so, it's worth it! :0)
If anyone else knows how long this will last, please let us know- seems to be the big, unanswered question here!

Probation - I am having the same problem. I am very tan, even thoughI'm only able to be at my pool on the weekends. I was prescribed doxy. for an infection I ended up getting 2 weeks after a biopsy, the only thing that ever slightly burns is my nose. I was in the sun yesterday for 3 hours. My hands, and knuckes turned fire red, alittle swollen ( not bad) but the tingling most all the time and pain under water is almost unbearable. I still have 6 more days to take it.I will be staying out of sun until finished, but My hands and feet are on fire and red. Even, someone noticed my hands today, and commented about why they were like that. They did tell me, to be careful in sun, & wear sunscreen. I have taken this before & went in a tanning bed without any problems or pain or fire red appearance and down right painful. will this stay in my system for days after I finish it? Does anyone know? I know what everyone is going through. Not fun.

Donn1965 - I was tested positive for lyme disease and put on doxycycline for 30 days.. I too had awful skin burning sensations and my fingers and hads would tingle terribly. I t was a really weird very uncomfortable feeling. my fingertips were extemely sensitive to cold and hot. rest assured these symptoms will go away, after being off the doxy for about two weeks symptoms have faded and I almost feel normal again
Ruby Torres - I've been taking doxy for 2 years. At first for Lyme, now for skin. At first it me throw up everyday (but that's a separate issue). The photo sensitivity is absolutely terrible. I don't get tingly hands but I get these chemical burns on my face. My skin gets extremely scaly and flaky and it burns like you would not believe. Anything I put on makes it sting- even water. I can peel off the flakes of skin but then my skin bleeds and leaves deep red patches and eventually has to scab over. I made the mistake of getting too much sun and now I'm dealing with that on my face and a terrible sunburn all over my legs and arms. Damn you doxy.

And At the end of the cycle, I was suffering from severe anxiety, irregular heart beat, tinnitus, chest pain, grey tongue, vision changes, racing heart, joint pain, muscle twitching, dry mouth and chronic fatigue syndrome. After a few visits to the ER for a month, doctors did not believe me that I was poisoned so i gave up on them. I still did my best to go to my job and do regular things but even that was very tough. Now I am a year out.. I still got a bit of fatigue left... My joint and tendons are still inflamed and hurting. My teeth are stained yellow which i dont know why. The worst is over but I still can't walk long distances and am still waiting to be 100 procent normal. Hope you all the best. Usman
