I have been taking doxycycline for about 4 days now. Last night I took it right before bed, with water, and upon waking at about 1 am I felt that the pill was stuck in my esophagus. And then my stomach starting burning and acid started coming up. I still feel like the pill is lodged in there, and it is very uncomfortable. Along with this issue, I have felt rather depressed, dizzy, yeast infection, and am extremely tired. I don't really know what to do at this point. I was prescribed it for pneumonia and a double ear infection. My chest is still killing me from the pneumonia and still have trouble breathing. My doctors have not been helpful what so ever through this process. I had to actually go to the hospital for the proper diagnosis. I don't even know if it is even working for me, but I don't have health insurance and have been out of work for over a week. Can any one give me ANY advice PLEASE???!!!!!
Ssj4 - I also experienced the same thing 3 weeks ago.i take the antibiotic just before sleep with a small amount of water just enough to pass..but it get stuck and i just ignore it..as result..it's very uncomfortable (painful) even swallowing own saliva an hour later.. I'd lost my appetite more than a week and most of the time, i take complete nutrition beverages. I consult my lecturere, a surgeon in my college and he told me the condition known as Drug-Induced Esophagitis. I used to swallow Magnesium Trisilicate, an antacid solution before and after taking meal..plus eating some food containing black pepper..it's works as at that time, my esophagus inflamed and eating 'hot' meals make it less swollen and less painful. Besides, u can ask ur doctor to prescribed u with lignocaine gel but it's very unpleasant..if only ur esophagus very painful..but the safest is the antacid solution..Good Luck..and make sure u drink enough water while taking the antibiotics next time..

Matty_boston - You can ask your Dr to prescribe you another anitbiotic in the hopes that it doesn't have any side effects.

Beauty4ashes - Don't take that pill anymore. Make a doctor's appointment right away. I just started taking one today(20MG) and if I feel something is wrong I'm going to stop. You should go to the ER and take the medicine with you if you can't get a doctor's appointment. Better safe than sorry. Good luck
Rockyclark - Make sure you take it with lots of water (half a litre) and remain standing or sitting for at least an hour - so taking it before bedtime isn't the right thing to do. It works fantastically for my sinusitis but as with all drugs you need to sort out which is best for you. don't take it with milk or other antacids as that with considerably weaken the effect. Clarithromycin is another new anitbiotic which may help you instead of doxy.
Raca579 - Sorry if I'm NO help! BUT your not alone... I have had the craziest side effcts. I've been extremely, nautious, depressed, out of body feeling, alittle nervous, tense, extremely tired I slept for 12 hours, and my doctors aren't helpful! Your to alone!
Msaet - This has happened to me last night. I took Doxycyclin right before bedtime and with NO Water!!! I was so sleepy and I told myselft I would drink some water in a few minutes and I dozed off. I woke at around 1 am with this burning pain in my esphagus. I felt like I couldn't breathe, like I needed to burp or throw up. It was soooo bad I couldn't sleep. I took 3 advil for the pain and dozed back off finally. But today the pain is still there. It feels like the pill is stuck in my chest. I don't know what to tell you because I don't know what to do for myself............. Sorry.
Misscrimsontide - Well the reason why it may have been stuck in your throat is because you didnt drink enough water to wash it down. Thusly, you are informed not to lie down for atleast 1 hr after taking the medication.
Miryag - i am noit aware if this can be used for ear infections but if is what was prescribed I would continue to use it. I would recommend eating somthing like celery or any other kind of food right after you take it to help it move down the esphogus. I get the same thing and have found that I need to take them 1 at a time.
Charlifarli - I am having the same problem, i have been on Doxyciline for 3 months now, and 4 days ago i took my 2 pills at night with a sip of water. Ever since iv been in real discomfort, it does feel like the pills are stuck but i though they should have disolved by now being 4 days ago. Im feeling that the blockage is slowly moving lower down and is now low in my right side of esphogus. It feels like a horrible pressure, when i eat and drink it hurts and when i burp only a little burp comes up and the other bit feels like it cant, and simply goes back down. Someone please help, im at work at the moment in the office and im thinking of leaving at lunch and going to the walk in Centre, i cant take it any more.. its really painful
Vonnie_6 - Hey guys, I've been takin this pill for about three months now. At first I would take them in the morning when I woke up and by the time I was in class I found myself starving, very naucious, and a feeling like I was going to throw up. After talking to my dr about it he said that I should try taking it at night. So I did, but with only enough water to make it go down, or sometimes even dry swallow. At first it felt like something was stuck in my esophogus, the pain was suttle and I only got it everyonce in a while. But lately the pain is non stop, constant. It hurts to swallow, eat, and drink anything. Nothing is helping me. I am going to stop the pill for a few days to see if things get better. If this is a side effect of not drinking plenty of water with it, this is ridiculous.
Erinjane13 - Oh my god, I was taking a short course of doxyciclion for 1 week for sinus pain. Last wednesday I took the pill before I went to bed with a quick drink, I woke up at about an hour later with severe pain in my throat like burning, and then sickness and then heartburn for 2 days. Since then I have not been able to swallow without pain!! I have been convinced ive had cancer of the eosophagus all week and had myself worried sick over it! once I spoke to nhs direct today she told me that this drug is prone to cause irritation to the osophagus and so I googled it and found all this. Even though I am still in pain, (never felt pain quiet like it) I am rather relieved.
Banstine - hey guys i took this pill for a week and started feeling like something was stuck in my throat and then it turned into burning in my chest. ive been off it for 5 days now and still have the burning but i have talked to all my doctors and they said this does happen from not drinking enough water. it sucks and is very painful but hopefully gets better soon. anyone else still have pain?

I still have pain when I swallow food and drink and pain in my upper back and occasional chest pain. I discontinued use of tablets last thurday! I do not think the pain is as bad as it was, but still tender. I will never take those tablets again!

Banstine - yah my dermatoligist said to start it in a month again and there is no way ill ever take it again. the throat is the worst part to hurt because u have to eat and drink so its hard to heal that spot. glad u are feeling better. im getting there slowly. i also have been off it since last thursday so im glad i found your post. keep me updated on how your doing
Banstine - Hey are you feeling better now. I see its been a month since you posted this and just wondering if the pain went away or not? I've had burning and throat pain for a week now and I have been off the pill but still have it. I'm going to the doctor this afternoon but I'm very nervous. Hope it is just from the pill but not sure why it would still be hurting.

Mine is completely gone now. Defo reaction from the tablets! Ill never take them again. Yeah I seen a doctor who gave me tablet to reduce the acid that came up from my stomach. They defo helped.

Ln1986 - I was taking doxycycline as an anti-malarial and on the airplane I took a capsule without water. I had the similar feeling; as if it had got stuck, burning pain when swallowing. It has been 3 days and the pain is yet to go away but after reading all these posts I will take an anti-acid to see if this helps.
Bharatnz - Normally when you buy doxycycline tab from pharmacy, the attendant would tell you to drink lot of water after you take this tablet as it has a tendancy to stick . Try to drop this tablet in glass full of water and leave it for 10 second. you will find this tablet would stick to glass.
Mooksgurl - I'm also taking doxycycline, and as soon as I swollow the pill I'm very sleepy. I don't know if it's something that I may need to discontinue or not. I really don't have another choice since I'm allergic to sulfur, cephalosporins and ceftrioxone.
Needanswers2012 - I like many of you have had the same reaction. Took the pill late without water. It was been over a week and the pain is still there. And it feels like its getting worse or my esophagus is getting more swollen. I'm in Madagascar and can't stop my malaria tablets. But when will this pill dissolve? Is it the pills I'm allergic to? Anyone that went to the doctor, please reply. I can't see a doctor and I'm trying to remain calm. But the pain won't subside.

Jilliemac - wow I can't believe all of your responses. My 15 year old daughter has been taking doxy for 6 months - the capsules- and the other night she swallowed them without enough water and went to bed-. woke up screaming that she couldn't breath and that they were stuck in her throat. Managed to get thru school and several exams but I took her to the ER as soon as she got home, which was useless as she wouldn't XRAY her or anything, they just gave her an antacid and something to numb her throat, which wore off after 1 hour. She has been complaining now for 5 days.She is taking an antacid but nothing else helps. I think it is ridiculous that they sell these capsules because doxy does come in the tablet form also and they r smaller and easier to swallow..I am at a loss as to what to do to help her she hasn't been able to eat much. Does anyone know how long this will take to heal???
Lkp - Can anyone tell me about how long it took for the pain to go away after they stopped the doxy?
Jilliemac - Daughter went to GI doctor gave her carafate susp 2 teaspoons/day. to coat her throat and within 2 days she was able to eat again. I just wished the ER doctor gave it to us in the first place. She is off DOXY for now cause GI doc said this is a common problem with this medicine. Good Luck

I feel a lot better reading all of your posts because I have been taking doxy for about 10 days now and for about 3 days ago I woke up in the middle of the night with intense chest pain. I was having trouble breathing and swallowing with very painful. I first thought it was something that I had eaten but it has persisted. I have had a lot of trouble sleeping as the moment I lay down the pain worsens. I was prescribed to take one pill twice a day for 30 days for folliculitis (infection on the hair follicles which is similar to an itchy rash). I thought about going to the doctor/hospital to find out what was wrong (thinking the worst) but it looks like this is not an uncommon problem and I am not alone here! Which has a nice little way of comforting me. From you guys' comments I guess I will stop taking the pill immediately and wait it out to see if my pain goes away. Looks like for most people the relief is not prompt so we will see. I wish my doctor had warned me about this pill. Doctor's always say to drink lots of water with any medicine but with as much even more painful problems this one can cause I'm surprised that he didn't stress the topic. Oh well, nothing I can do now. Hopefully this dreadful pain let's go of me! Hope you guys are feeling much better.
If you can respond, would you please let me know about how long it took you to feel normal again after you stopped taking the meds?

Lucius - Please do NOT take this drug. It is a neurotoxin and the medical profession are studiously ignoring its terrible side effects. Taking this drug can lead to extreme anxiety, confusion, memory loss, dizziness and terryfying panic attacks leading to, in some cases, a full mental breakdown and psychiatric admission. I know this because a close family member has endured hell because of doxycycline and she is not the only one by a long shot. Consider this drug a POISON and avoid it at all costs.
