I've been on Desogen (Apri) for three years. When I first started it I was so relieved to be on birth control (getting pregnant was not an option) that I think I ignored any possible side-effects. After being on Apri for about six months (I don't remember clearly) I began to get very depressed. It was hard to get out of bed, eat, dress, or pretty much anything else. There is a history of depression and mania in my family so I thought it was a bio-chemical thing. I had been self-medicating for years prior to this with marijuana and alcohol so my thinking was very muttled and I wasn't sure what was causing the symptoms. Perhaps withdrawal? Though I was not physically addicted to alcohol, but definitely very dependent of marijuana. The depression got so bad that I became suicidal. Some days I didn't get out of bed or get dressed. I was prescribed anti-depressants (which is a whole other story) and began feeling better after about two months.
After reading all of these posts I'm starting to think that maybe the depression was caused by the hormonal imbalance created from taking Apri. I'm going to go off of it and just use condoms until I find something else or just use them indefinitely. I really don't want to go back on any type of hormone. I need to make an appointment with my doctor to reevaluate the situation. But thank you so much to all the women who shared their experience with Desogen. It has validated some suspicions I have had for a while but couldn't quite put my finger on.
