I took 0.2mg of Clonidine per day for a month and I hated it. At the time, I had no medical insurance and when my blood pressure spiked at 172/124, I went to the ER and was prescribed the Clonidine. Immediately, I noticed the fatigue. Simply put: It made me feel like it was 3am all day long. I could barely stay awake for any length of time. This is a serious problem because I'm an EMT and sometimes I have to be awake for 24 hours at a stretch. Drinking coffee did nothing. I took the medication and I went to sleep for about four hours. End of story. I don't know if it was an effect of the medication itself or the fatigue from the medication or frustration over the fatigue from the medication, but my mood went to Hell fast. I was always in a bad mood. I grumbled constantly and I felt ashamed that I was exposing my friends and loved ones to that behavior. I'm not always the sunniest person out there, but this was ridiculous and it was effecting my life. Also, there was constipation. I had never been constipated in my life, but I had to eat a huge amount of fiber to prevent problems. And worst of all: Clonidine did nothing for my blood pressure. I literally had no change in my blood pressure for the month I was on Clonidine. Anyway, after a month I got a prescription for Lisinopril, ditched the Clonidine, got my BP under control and have felt 100% better ever since.
