I have an eight year old daughter and I need help!!! She is a great student at school and loves to help, but when she is at home one minute she will be extremely happy the next minute she will be screaming and yelling. She is constantly tired!!! This has been going on for a while and yesterday we were playing a video game and she was taking her character and making it commit suicide... I am extremely worried..... Is my daughter bipolar...
Healthymom - I believe my 10 yr. old daughter had a bi-polar episode, undiagnosed ( it runs in my family), she had all the symptoms of rapid cycling,followed by severe episodes of inactivity, social withdrawal, severe mood swings ( she was going through puberty and had a bad flu at the time), she was having racing thoughts and couldn't sleep all night ( wanted to call her friends and go play outside at 2:00 A.M.). ( All this happened in about a two week time frame ) After much worrying on my part, numerous doctors ( who told me to ride it out and see where it went), medical tests ( all came back normal), and she was still getting worse, I prayed to God to help my baby. The word " nutrition" immediately popped in my head when I said the prayer. I went to see an orthomolecular nutritionist in our area, he was awesome!!!! He put my daughter on Omega 3's,( for hormones) Vitamin C ( for immune system), L-theanine ( an amino acid that helps dopamine production), and on 1.25 mg. of sublingual melatonin. For a short time she was also on an over the counter pill, lithium orotate - very small dosage It has about 1/200th the dosage of normal lithium and does not require blood tests for toxicity. Within 48 hours I had my child that I knew back, and I watched how the symptoms described above lessened and eventually went away after approx. 5 months of this regimen. I've researched a lot on bi-polar since then and noted that the Omega 3's were probably critical to pulling her out of the severe clinical depressive cycle she was in. It's been 5 yrs. since this hell, she is doing fine, ( A and B student, has friends, no cycling, she's off all supplements except some Vitamin D and also the melatonin, which helps maintain and regulate her sleep cycle. She has no difficulties sleeping. She has never been on any of the medications normally prescribed. I pray that you will find the solution to your child's problems, I do believe if you had to choose only one supplement to take for bi-polar, I would do the Omega 3's, but they have to be in the proper ratio. I remember she had a half a tablespoon/day, that came in a cobalt blue bottle. It's important not to overdo this. Find a good Orthomolecular nutritionist for her!!!! Melatonin is also very helpful in small doses. In young children give only for short periods of time, until the circadian rhythm in her brain has been reset. it can cause nightmares. God Bless
