Effects of Avelox Still Lingering?
Posted over a year ago
I took Avelox and Prednisone for bronchitis and still feel anxious and panicky a week after completing the Avelox. Is that possible? I feel like it's left me worried about everything and I was formerly a pretty easy going woman. Anyone else experience this?
Disablednurse - The doc who prescribed Avelox and prednisone should be sued!!! First of all,the doc should have ordered another antibiotic. Avelox,as well as ALL quinolones, should never be taken with steroids(prednisone). Avelox does cause nervousness but prednisone causes nervous energy symptoms. You,re fortunate though. Avelox taken with steroids can easily cause tendon ruptures.
Go to this website and print everything on it. Give it to the doc who ordered this POISON drug,Avelox. The docs get "perks" for ordering this VERY costly drug. fqtoxicityresearchfoundation.org
I have learned from experience that NO drug is safe. If i really need an antibiotic,i stop all vitamins and other supplements while i take antibiotic. Drink extra water. Make sure you tell your doc of your residual symptoms and make sure he documents what you tell him!! He,ll want to "cover himself" when you give him the data from the website!!! Shame on these bad docs. It,s their job to protect us by doing their own research BEFORE ordering a toxic drug. We are forced to do our own research before taking anything. Don,t make the fatal mistake of trusting the FDA to protect us. I am suing Bayer for my permanent Avelox damages. I would sue The FDA if i could. I blame them as much as Bayer because they knew about all the safety issues and approved it anyway! It,s all about money, sad but so true.
Good luck. You will most likely recover soon. The prednisone has altered your cortisone levels secreted by the adrenal gland. I hope you tapered the prednisone before discontinuing it! I had a horrible steroid induced psychosis from prednisone 60mg. I tapered the dose but still experienced shaking, insomnia, profuse sweating, increased shortness of breath from hyperventilating, crying episodes, paranoia. I was given steroids at hospital for anaphylactic reaction to Avelox!! Hives all over, laryngospasm, cyanotic!!
Nightmare ! My lawyer tells me over and over i should have sued my pcp doc who prescribed this toxic drug. I have learned that the doc STILL orders it. I saw a Bayer drug rep in his office with Olive Garden LUNCH in hand. I was furious. I can,t sue him because more than 2 years has passed since avelox injury so i educate everyone i can including docs. They don,t know if we don,t tell them so spread the word. There is power in numbers. Pray this drug is recalled!

Mistyeyed - nervouswreck,
you are most likely feeling these effects from both medications. Avelox, and quinolone antibiotics in general, can make people feel shaky & jittery, and they have a half-life of about 12 hours, which means this is how long it takes for half of the drug to be removed from your system. This side effect should go away once all of the drug has been eliminated by your body. Prednisone can make people feel jittery, shaky, agitated, irritable, flushed, etc., your doctor most likely gave you this medication to help with any respiratory difficulties such as wheezing that you may have had because of your infection. Yes, there is an increased chance of tendon rupture when taking quinolone antibiotics, taking steroid medications (prednisone) at the same time increases this risk. Quinolones can be very important antibiotics when they are used properly. Typically, they should be reserved for more difficult to treat infections, or infections that have previously failed another antibiotic. It sounds to me like you are having some short term side effects from both medications that should go away within a week or so. You were probably not on a long term regimen of steroids, so tapering is not as much of an issue, (tapering is important in people who take large doses of steroids over long periods of time, so that it gives your adrenal glands a chance to realize they need to "wake up" before the steroid is completely stopped. I would imagine you probably took a 6-12 day tapering dose which is pretty standard. Hang in there, you should start to feel better soon! If you don't, then you should discuss it with your doctor.
Fedupgirl - I ave been off avelox for 2 months and I still have trembling, my body jerks at nite heart palpatation, will this ever end?
Mersault - Yup, you take Avelox and you do damage to your soft tisuues. Common side effect? Ruptured achilles tendons! Luckily, the horrific warnings that come with Avelox and WARN IN BOLD on the first sentance to AVOID taking with prednisone! Turns out this increases the effect to the soft tissues.
After four days still fel tthe prednizone weirdness, but tingling stated.
Day five I got off both and had excruciating tendon pains all over my body for 10 days. Almost no sleep and got off everything.
Ruptured three tendons while on bed rest the first three days (foot, elbo and finger) as well as knee has something wrong now.
Six months later I have changed my diet to no red meat or dairy, take no drugs exercise on stationary bike (I can no longer walk more than a mile without pain) 3-4 times a week. I now am diagnosed with tendonitus and arthitus (SIC) and told to just live with it you are getting old! Im only 45 and used to run 5 times a week!
I realize this is a late post, but it scored high on my search so why not post?
READ THE INCLUDED INSTRUCTIONS/WARNINGS! Avelox is a last resort drug to be used in EXTREME cases and the need outweighs the known side effects!
