67-yr-old overweight female was prescribed Atenolol - 25mg. per day for trembling (Essential Tremors). After 4 days I could not walk 10 feet without being severely out of breath. At my doctor's office I was sent to the e.r. as soon as I mentioned severe shortness-of-breath and feeling pressure in my chest. The alarm on the pulse monitor in my e.r. room was set to sound off if the pulse count got below 40. It went off constantly until the nurse changed the set point to 35. Even then, it would alarm every 5 minutes or so. They took me off the Atenolol immediately.I was hospitalized for 3 days, during which my heart rate finally came up, but only into the low 50's. A cardiac catheterization (angiogram) revealed NO ARTERIAL BLOCKAGE, so that was not a part of the problem. A couple days after going home I wore a Holter heart monitor for a 24-hour period. It revealed that my heart was stopping several times during the night for a few seconds each time. On September 13th I had a pacemaker implanted. (It has since become dislodged and is now near my left armpit!) It's uncomfortable, but it keeps my pulse at a steady 60 beats per minute. I still get a little out of breath because my heart doesn't speed up until I am several minutes into any physical activity. I would certainly be interested in any lawsuit concerning Atenolol.
