Adderall XR is a long-acting psychostimulant prescribed to treat ADHD.
Adderall XR
Adderall XR is a long-acting central nervous system stimulant. This prescription drug stimulates the production of chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters.
What is Adderall XR?
Adderall XR is a Psychostimulant made from a combination of Dextroamphetamine and Amphetamine. It increases the production of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain. It also acts as both a Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitor and a Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitor, which means the neurotransmitters remain in the brain longer. It differs from Adderall because it is an extended release formula, meaning you take one dose in the morning yet experience the benefits of the medication all day long.
What is AdderallXR Used For?
Adderall XR is typically prescribed to people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It helps people with ADHD focus, exhibit impulse-control and control excessive physical activity.
What Are Potential Side Effects of Adderall XR?
You may experience some of these side effects:
Nervousness
Difficulty falling asleep
Agitation
Irritability
Shakiness
Change in libido
Dry mouth
Abdominal discomfort
VomitingLoose stools
Loss of desire to eat
Weight loss
Most of the above-mentioned side effects are not considered serious unless they become severe.
However, there are several serious side effects attributed to Adderall. Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following:
Fatigue
Difficulty speaking
Slowness of speech
Feeling dizzy
A limb goes numb
Over-excitability
Aggression
Visual problems
Paranoia
Skin irritations

Who Should Use Adderall XR?
Adderall XR is ideal for children and adults who have ADHD and are relatively healthy. This medication can help restore serenity and ability to concentrate, helping you to remain on task and maintain self control with impulses and physical activity. The benefit of using Adderall XR over Adderall is all in the dosing. Adderall is fast-acting, lasting only five to six hours before another dose is required. This short span won’t get most adults through a work day or children through a school day. Adderall XR releases medication throughout the day, meaning you get the same dosage all day long, extending the effect of the medication for twelve hours without having to take a second dose. This is perfect for children and adults who do not have easy access to their medications during the day or who simply don’t want to be bothered to have to remember to take that second dose.
Who Should Not Use Adderall XR?
You should not use Adderall XR if you are taking an MAO Inhibitor or have taken an MAO inhibitor in the past two weeks. Some common MAO Inhibitors are:
The combination of Adderall and MAO inhibitors can result in potentially fatal side effects.
You should also not take this drug if you are allergic to stimulants such as Benzphetamine (Didrex), Lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse), or methamphetamine (Desoxyn), Amphetamine or Dextroamphetamine.
There are several vitamins, supplements, over-the-counter medications and prescription medications that can interfere with Adderall XR or, when taken with Adderall XR can result in negative or even serious side effects. Be sure to tell your doctor about all vitamins, supplements, over-the-counter and prescription medications you are taking. While this list is not all-inclusive, the following is a list of medications that you must mention to your doctor before taking Adderall XR:
Alpha Blockers of any sort
Medications used to treat high blood pressure
Medications for seizures
Supplements containing glutamic acid
Some health conditions can be exacerbated by Adderall XR. Talk to your doctor before using this if you have any of the following medical conditions:
Problems with anxiety
If you have “irregular heartbeat”, a Heart Defect, or have been diagnosed with Hardening or the Arteries, you should be aware that some patients with heart problems have had heart attacks when taking Adderall XR. Because Adderall XR increases blood pressure, you should also beware of the risk of blindness if you have glaucoma.
Those who have struggled with Addictions in the past should be cautioned regarding the addictive nature of Adderall XR. This drug impacts the brain’s mesolimbic reward pathways, making it a highly addictive substance. As a result, the FDA has classified this as a controlled substance.
