Graves Disease patient going in remission.
I have experienced all the same symptoms as every one else
leg cramps, exhaustion, loss of sex drive, anxiety/panic attacks, weight gain, hair loss, horrible terrible rash on feet and palms of hands I could go on.
My concern is my doctor taking me off PTU and has not mentioned the Toprol. I understand that stopping increases your risk of a heart attack so what's next?

I too had HORRIBLE experiences on Toprol-XL. I was put on it after I walked into a doctor's office and my BP was 235/152. Yep..you read that right! Scary times. I started taking the med, and I too gained 35 pounds with no change in diet. I was tired, weak, groggy - I honestly felt like I was slowly dying. At that point, I decided that high blood pressure was far better than the experience I had on Toprol. It ruined my marriage. Can you say ZERO libido? I decided that I would try a different form of metroprolol - metroprolol tartrate versus succinate. I did this when I went out of town - I honestly thought my heart was going to pound out of my chest - coming off this medication was horrible, and if the other posts are true about this being worse to come off than opiates, I REALLY feel for addicts now. I have been off the Toprol now for about 9 months, and I feel so much better. I've lost what I call the Toprol weight, and I made some life changes. I did the following: (A) I purchased a rebounder (mini-trampoline) and have built up from 5 minutes per day to 15 minutes per day (goal = 40 minutes per day) - there are HUGE health benefits in rebounding and it's really easy on my joints (google the benefits - I promise you won't be disappointed). I turn on the TV or turn on my Ipod and bounce away. (B) I joined Freelife International, and began drinking Go Chi juice (www.pbowen.freelife.com) because it has three scientific studies proving its effectiveness. (C) I stopped drinking caffeinated soda and began drinking a homemade blend of green (matcha) & darjeeling teas (if you want the recipe, e-mail me and I'll send it pamela.bowen@gmail.com), and (D) I bought a device called RESPERATE (www.resperate.com). I HAVE MY LIFE BACK!!! Don't think you have to live the way you are forever!

Hello,

I have just gone through a series of tests and a heart cath over the holidays. I have MVP and two other leaky valves. I have known about these since I was 28, I am now 62. I have had problems with the valves, skipped beats, faster beats early on in diagnosis. Just this Nov., I started with problems again, thus the tests were completed. They found Ven. Fib, fast and skipped beats, therefore putting me on the Toprol XL Tab SA. I have only been on this 7 days. New Year's Day, 4 days after the heart cath, I started with fever and chills, only to find out 2 days ago I have full blown strep throat. This makes me wonder if I had this before the heart cath was performed, as I had complete exhaustion,.... anyhow, I took myself to my family doc and she is taking me off of the Toprol and after reading all of your reports I am very glad. She treats me with herbs and has for years, until this episode, I have been very well, I am actually an energizer bunny due to her efforts! So I am working with her on herbs to build my system back up and support for the heart. I hope the rest of you can find a way to wellness that works for you. I know many people don't believe in herbs but I firmly do! Don't be afraid to try herbs if you can afford it! I am 62 and don't look it or act it, like I said until this episode and it truly makes me wonder if it wasn't the infection playing the biggest part. What concerns me is why that was not caught in the first place? Anyhow, take heed to your own body warnings, other people do not know what is transpiring inside of you, only you can know this. Thank you Doctor ** for keeping me well!

I am on 200 mg of Toprol, because I have cardiomyopathy. In about 2001 I was feeling very poorly, fighting and gasping for breath whenever I lay down or adjusted my position in bed. I had been advised that with my height and weight I could expect to be able to tolerate not more than 150 mg of Toprol. By this time I was in assisted care. My regular doctor was out of town, so I asked another doctor in our clinic if my dosage could be adjusted back to 150 mg. This doctor agreed to this, and I immediately felt noticeably better. Shortly after this I was out of assisted care and back in independent living. I continued taking 150 mg for the past 5 years.
But I recently changed doctors, so that all my medical records could be with the same system. The new doctors have raised my dosage of Toprol up to 200 mg, and I have been experiencing some of the same symptoms I suffered in 2001: Exhaustion, great weakness, episodes of fighting for breath several times a night; at times I sense that the struggle may not be far from death!
The doctors say I now have to be on maximum doses of drugs. But I do not smoke or drink, and sense that people like us sometimes need smaller doses than others. Out of desperation I have just started reducing my own dosage back to 300 mg in two days (150 a day). The pills are almost impossible to split, though I can break them in half, so I am taking 200 one day, 100 the next. Last evening I took my first 100--and slept through the night WITH NO BREATHING EPISODES!
I'm going to make notes on my daily results and inform my doctors on what I find.

I started taking toprol after my doctor reccommend it for my fast pulse rate and high blood pressure. Originally went to the doctor for problems caused by a nervous system exhaustion. and realised that my pressure was very high 155/98 anyways to make a long story short after taking the lowest dose 25mg for 2 days I started to feel like i was losing control of my mental state of mind, my mood changed to very dull state. like i was just a zombie inside a body - this medication has a bad effect on the brain , it did get my pressure down fast. but the effects on my mood and mental stability wasnt worth it stopped after 3 days. i am wondering how many people who have been taking this medication for years who are now suffering from depression and cant make the connection.

disturbing dreams, difficulty waking, exhaustion, short term memory loss, confusion, aching joints, swollen knee, muscle cramping, difficulty concentrating. Switched to Lopressor which helped a little but am still having the problems with nightmares, sleep disturbances and mental fogginess. Doesn't seem to be as bad as with the Toprol XL, though.
