I had the Mirena inserted in July 2008 during my period (as I was told it had to be). I was also told to give my body three months to "get used to" it. Where should I start? I had some cramping, followed by contractions five days later - yes, I said contractions (ladies with babies, we know the difference between cramps and contractions); I had itchiness outside (vulva) and inside which was a yeast infection that was treated twice - once with OTC medication and then with antibiotics. My period ended in July; when I thought I was getting a period in August, it started as that thick brownish gunk. It was like this for 4 days; then I started bleeding, thinking I was gettting a normal period. Well, since August, the bleeding would come and dissipate - not totally go away - until within the last couple of weeks (since the end of August - beginning of September) it has become heavier. This is not normal or natural. I have bled through a pantyliner. I bled through to my pants using a tampon and maxipad. I've had to change the tampon and pad within one hour. I've had bleeding that is bright red followed by small clots and then one huge one (approx. 6 inches long, and 1.5 -2 inches wide). I repeatedly called the OBGYNs office throughout this ordeal; they have told me to give it time, this normal, "well this is better than the alternative - what would you do (re:pregnancy)" and have at times reacted as if I'm overreacting. Last week I went there to express the concerns, to have a checkup, and to express that I want it removed; the PA could find the strings and wrote me a script for a sonogram. But before I left the office, when I mentioned that I wanted this out, she said, "You really don't want to get this out - just give it some time- give it another 3 months - really, you don't want to take this out."
I went for the sono on Saturday and the tech asked when I had my last period. When I mentioned a brief synopsis of what has been happening, she mentioned that my uterine lining is very thick. I questioned, "Shouldn't it be thinning out if I'm having my period?" I also mentioned that it should be thinning out because of the Mirena. She couldn't afford any answers in regards to the Mirena but did confirm that during a period the lining thickens up and then thins out - sheds - but that mine was very thick.
Ok, now I'm totally freaked-out. I hope this isn't anything serious.

Gosh so happy I found you ladies. I got my in mine in this May, after delivering my 2nd son in March. I can't stop eating, always hungry, haven't stopped bleeding, dry skin, constipation, major major back pains, no energy and weirdest is pregnancy nausea in the evenings. I'm on the phone right now to either take it out or talk to my doc more about it. Thanx ladies for all your stories.

I received the MIRENA on Jun 9th 2008, the doctor inserted the Mirena while I was on my cycle. After the insertion my cycle stopped. Its been a month now and I received my cycle for the month of July last week. Since then I have been spotting and wearing pantyliners. So, Tuesday I went for my 6 weeks checkup and explained to my Gyn what I've been experiencing with the Mirena which she said it was normal. I explained that my partner could feel the strings and if she could cut them down. When she went in to cut them down the string were not there. I have a sonogram scheduled on the 28th to see where my strings are. I am am very alarmed and concerned of where they are and why she couldn't see them. I asked is this something i need to be concerned about and she said no,,,,I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this at all. I chose the mirena due to high blood pressure and not being able to take the pill, but now I really don't know if all this was worth it. Im tired of the spotting etc.......No sex drive.....I've had migraines for yrs so I cant say its from the Mirena.

update to my 06/17 post:
took 4 Advil before I left the house and then downed a Percocet 15 min. from the office. Knew PAIN would be involved after having a biopsy a few yrs. ago of the ute, AWAKE in the doc. office and was not in the mood for another bout similar to it. I was ready for the removal. First thing off the charts was my blood pressure. 150/100. Explained the cause of a few of my symptoms. Then went through that long laundry list of odd phys. problems since insertion 11/07. She asked me what I wanted to do. Ah, remove it, now please. She did and it DID still hurt. Asked me if I wanted to see it.. ah, no thank you. Scheduled the pre-op for July 7th. Again have to have internal sonogram done of ute and ovaries to see how much she will 'leave me with' when its all said and done. Expect bag of multiple fibroids to the be very least of the removal procedure. Would be very happy to be able to keep at least one ovary. Not sure how cystic they are for that to be possible. Mirena can also cause cysts on the ovaries of which I've already dealt with for the past 25+ yrs. and knowing such I am baffled as to why she didn't warn me about this little side effect. Hoping such cysts haven't ruined my chances of keeping some form of continued hormone secretion naturally.
Bled a bit through-out yesterday. No bleeding at bed time or any today, so far, which is a first since May 22nd. Feeling better in all aspects but not sure if it is actually because the Mirena is out or if my mind is playing games due to the removal. ; ) Will give myself a few weeks now to see how my body changes before the big surgery before I post again. Good luck to all.

I did a little research and called this number to report my symptoms with Mirena and informed them that others WILL be calling.
BE HEARD. CALL!! Prevent this from happening to other women.
You may get a refund too!! I had the Mirena in for 9 months and the girl said I will get back a full refund of $487. When? Unsure.
This is what they said: They will want your name, address, DOB, how many children, were you given a pregnancy test before the placement of Mirena, was there a sonogram done after the Mirena (mine were YES), and your doctors info.
Contact info: 888-842-2937 option #3 you may have to leave your name, number and why your calling if no one answers your call. I called around 2 yesterday and they called me back this morning.
Good Luck. We are heading in the right direction!!!

Wow! The day before yesterday, a friend of a friend reported that she had her IUD taken out. It was Mirena. I have had mine in since last December and it never occurred to me that this could be the problem. In June, I started having symptoms that were like UTIs but I've never had one. I had to pee all the time and when I did, it burned. I felt nauseous but then, before going to the dr. the symptoms would pass. Finally, after a month, I decided to stop ignoring it. In the meantime, I started having all these lower gut/uterine achy feelings that moved toward my groin and pelvic bone/thigh area. I've never had anything like it. Sometimes, it was hard to walk. I went to my gyn. and she said she saw nothing and I had a sonogram and they saw nothing and said my Mirena looked great. In the meantime, I have been more and more tired, drinking three or more cups of coffee a day to stay awake. I have a 1 year old and I feel so tired I sometimes feel frustrated with her. I also have had rage during my PMS which I've never had before in my life. I used to get a little weepy-sometimes. Now, I find that I'm so irritable about the slightest thing. Until this friend of a friend mentioned her trouble (which was similar to mine) I never even thought of the Mirena. My GP told me that it was a pulled muscle (even though I had no recollection of pulling anything). I can't wait to get this thing out! Oh, also, someone mentioned vaginal dryness--YES! I've never had a problem with this before but it has been getting harder and harder to ignore during intimacy. I was never, ever told about any such side effects! I am having the Mirena taken out on Thursday--I can't wait.
