Hi so glad to read this im calling my dr as i read!! i got my mirena in apr of 2005, i was one of the 1st pts my dr did one on. I have no children and am married, we wanted to wait to have kids and i have frequent migraines so the pill is a no-no. the day i had it put in i passed out while leaving the office. they said "oh wow that never happens"...hmmm wonder how many others passed out after i did!
i cant really report any bad side effects until about 1 yr after insertion. i started having terrible cramping where i couldn't even stand up. this would come and go every few months. then i noticed i couldn't urinate as well anymore...the stream was weak and it seemed like my muscles were tense or something. i now have constant pain and pressure of the pelvic floor, my abdomen is always bloated, i have gained 20lbs and i do weight watchers and cant lose a pound, i retain tons of water, i have fatigue and joint/muscle pain. I attributed the joint pain and fatigue to fibromyalgia which i have been dx'd w/ in 2007 but now i wonder if its this mirena!
i have been to different doctors and specialists because i don't feel well, i haven't for a few years now...now i wonder if its because of this mirena. im going to have mine removed and see how i feel. the urination problem is the worst! i always feel like i have to pee but nothing comes out...the urologist said all my tests were normal.
im so glad i read all these posts...i hope every woman reads this before deciding on the mirena.

Wow, I am amazed guys. As far as not really having a period, I love it. but, just recently I have started questioning my Mirena. I have been complaining about being totally and completely exhausted. I have to get my 2 older kids off to school and lay back down for more rest. I just cannot seem to "catch up" on sleep. Everyone says, oh its because you have 5 kids, but the more I think about it, it has come on since I have had the Mirena. The biggest problem has been that my husband and I are on the verge of divorce because I have absolutely NO sex drive. I could care less if I ever had it again. I am only 30 years old, I should be in my prime shouldn't I? I have started counseling to try to save my marriage, and while I think there are some other issues too, I truly believe since I have had the Mirena, it has taken my sex drive from little to none. I cannot stress "NONE" enough. Unlike many of you others my husband is not as patient. I think I need to make a phone call to my GYN. Oh yeah, I have had severe acne since I have gotten it as well.

Hi ladies,
I have had Mirena out for a week. I feel better. "Nyrek" posted yesterday about Bayer and the information on their website. here is the web address: ******
Scroll down and look for Mirena. Hit the first PDF for Product Monograph. She is absolutely right!
Quite upsetting to know that within 2 YEARS I may be able to get pregnant! I don't have that much time to spare. My little girl will be turning 5 at the end of May. It is now or never. I hope that I was able to get rid of much of the hormone from my body. I have been feeling way better. No crazy fatigue. Nothing. Some nausea (my period) and some joint pain but I had those before Mirena. Not as severe now. i have Fibromyalgia. Hopefully that goes away too.
There is a huge difference now compared to before. My body has been adjusting and coming back to its normal state. It is amazing! I am really ticked to have read that the hormone enters the bloodstream in 15 min. I thought it was a localized thing. It explains the extreme bloating and weight gain those weeks after insertion. Plus acne. Then I lost weight once the anxiety and depression set in. No wonder we are all messed up! Not cool at all!
If you all need my account for that class action suit, let me know. They make this thing out to be so wonderful when all it does is make you a walking wreck. Absolutely scary. It does work against pregnancy but at what cost?
One side effect that always got me was that I felt these spasms in my uterus, much like the ones I got when I was near the end of my pregnancy. It was crazy! At times I thought the thing had failed and I was truly pregnant. Anyone else had these weird spasms or cramping up? I still urinate a lot. Still feel some pressure down there but not like before. I still think it is my period as I'm at the end of the cycle. I have this bad feeling that although they say the hormones leave at half life, each woman reacts differently. While I felt relief on Day 1 of removal, others have taken longer. Just how long does it truly take? Especially when it has wreaked so much havoc in our bodies? I hope it does not affect my ability to conceive. That is definitely not nice!
Well, if anyone could let me know about the weird spasms, i would appreciate it! If any of you have had a baby after Mirena, how long did it take you to conceive???
As always, Good Luck, Ladies!

I am really surprised to see so many women posting the exact same symptoms I have. I had the Mirena inserted August 15, 2006. I have been married since September 15, 2006. It was all good at first. Had the regular symptoms of the Mirena with the bleeding and pain and so on. Great birth control, besides the two scares I had. Then about a year ago, it all started to change. major mood swings, irritability, severe joint pains, severe fatigue, insomnia, weight loss (I am 30 now; was anorexic from age 21-23; anxiety will jump start the anorexia; another battle!), and many more symptoms. the worst by far has been the fatigue and joint pain and severe lack of sex drive. I still consider myself a newlywed. I love my husband but I never thought I would get to the point of not wanting him to touch me in any way. I researched, like some of you, and did my homework. It was all gravy at first! I have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and starting to think it may be the Mirena instead. I can't take the drugs cuz they knock you out. The symptoms sound too familiar on this site. It's like listening to my life story right now! I have a beautiful 4 year old and not sure if I want another one. My husband is to the point of getting a vasectomy so I wont have to worry about birth control any longer but my 4 year old wants a sibling. Economy is nuts. Having another one would hurt us. I just can't do the permanent thing yet cuz I don't want to regret it.
I only want to be back to normal. My husband has been begging me to take the Mirena out. For those of you who are Hispanic, he calls it La Morona (the Moron). I have battled depression and bad anxiety attacks. It is unbelievable!
If anyone out there is planning on putting one in, THINK about it first. Do extra homework. Don't just take one person's word for it. Look at both good comments and bad comments. It was all good at first for me but things can change. You have to be ready to make a choice quickly once things change before letting it go so long like many of us have done. It has cost us our sanity at times, our health, happiness, husbands and much more. Listen to your instincts. They are usually right.
At my husband's pleas and for my daughter's emotional well-being (she has suffered too), I am making an appointment to take it out. if I do get pregnant, I will take that as a sign that it was meant to be.
I refuse to let my marriage and my daughter suffer for a piece of plastic in my uterus.
I wish you all luck!

Oh my gosh!!!! I am so happy I found this site!!! it's a revelation; I had my coil fitted about 4 1/2 years ago as I had incredibly heavy monthly bleeding/clotting/flooding etc BUT I was slim, happy, enjoyed life, slept well, had no pain in my joints or muscles, led a pretty normal life as much as a woman can do!!! But now... well. All of the above and more. Oh yes, no libido whatsoever! night sweats. anxiety. raynauds. I was even tested for arthritis, fibromyalgia, rheumatism... I had cancer some years ago and even thought that maybe that was back as the pain has been so bad. I am DEFINITELY having this revolting thing removed ASAP!!!!!

I am so grateful for finding this site! I seriously thought I was losing my mind because of all the things I've been feeling over the past 6 months. Extreme fatigue, moodiness, joint pain (hands, knees), back pain, blurry vision, breast tenderness, NO sex drive, dizziness, nausea and blotchy skin. Since I work in the medical field, I was beginning to think that I had fibromyalgia or rheumatoid arthritis. Since reading all the responses, I'm making an appointment first thing Monday morning to have my Mirena removed.
Thank you ladies!

Hello,
My journey with Minera started in September 2005, two months after the birth of my second daughter.
Previous to the insertion of Minera and the birth of my daughter I was under the care of a rheumatologist for chronic knee and foot pain. I was never diagnosed with any specific disease or disorder. When I became pregnant with my daughter in May 2004 all of my pain vanished. I stopped seeing the doctor and had a normal pregnancy.
My pain symptoms started to return shortly after I gave birth and in September 2005 I decided to have Minera put in. I had no problems with the insertion and after bleeding for about 6 weeks my period stopped. I had some cramping here and there but no more period. I felt great!
My pain symptoms worsened over time and I developed more problems. none of which I related to Minera. My problems were:
Terrible joint pain and swelling in my knees
Pain that radiates from my lower back to my feet
Pain in my right ring finger
Stiffness
TMJ
Insomnia
Hair loss
Weight gain
Irritability
Mood swings
Scarring acne
Fatigue
Lack of interest in sex
Swelling in my feet
I started to believe I had something really wrong with me. I did research and found a lot of my symptoms were in sync with Fibromyalgia. I started seeing a new rheumatologist who did tons of blood work and x-rays on me. After all the results came back she said I did not test positive for anything. She diagnosed my with rheumatoid arthritis because I had all the clinical symptoms. She prescribed prednisone and placqunel (sp?) for the arthritis which seems to be helping.
I was on a parenting forum I frequent the other day and I saw a post form a woman complaining about all the side effects of Minera. I did some research and found this site and another
http://curezone.com/forums/f.asp?f=713
It's like a light bulb went off. All of these things that I have been suffering with seem to be related to the IUD.
So I would like to hear from some of you ladies that have had Minera removed already. Do you feel better? Are your side effects gone?
Also has anyone removed Minera themselves?

I had my mirena since 2002, I recently found this site and really started paying attention to my body, MOODY, definitely, IRRITABLE, definitely, DEPRESSED, for sure, NO SEX DRIVE, my husband hates it. BACK PAIN, is unbelievable. OMG, I’ve spoke with 2 Doctors about these being possible side effects of Mirena, OUT OF THE QUESTION. In Feb of 2008, I was diagnosed with FIBROMYALGIA, I wonder how much of that is really the MIRENA. Can some one post to my private email (******) to let me know the side effects AFTER having the Mirena removed and if you are better now. Thanks for saving a life.
