Hi I am 45 an been taking 5mg Lisinopril daily for the last 5 years, I am also a very active racing cyclist. Over the last 12 months I have seen my performances drop by 50% and I am so tired all the time, I also feel short of breath, been to docs he ran all the normal tests, nothing showed up, also,I now get terrible headache above my right eye whenever try any exercise. Watch out for grapefruit, it must react with the meds, my throat swelled up almost closed, horrible experience, I now ger blurred vision and muscle weakness. Not on, I have taken myself off the meds to see if things get back to normal, I will be able to monitor the situation based on my cycling performance results and will report back.

Exhaustion, joint pain, headache, ankle swelling, shortness of breath, persistent (cold) sores in my nose…
I am 52 years old and have taken Lisinopril for approximately 7-8 months. During the past two weeks, the majority of my joints have suddenly begun to ache. My fingers, especially index fingers, and one wrist are extremely uncomfortable. Other than the side effects listed in the comments on these pages, has anyone lost their eye brows? Sounds crazy doesn’t it but I first thought it was a side effect of hormone replacement therapy. I gradually stopped taking the HRT (ugh!) but continued to lose my eyebrows and now I notice my eyelashes are thinning. After trips to two dermatologists, neither had an explanation and both denied the HRT drug would cause the hair loss. I was and am extremely frustrated. I am not sure what made me research side effects for Lisinopril again but I finally saw something on an internet site saying that ONE percent of people could suffer hair loss. I’m sure my doc will be disappointed that I want off this medication. The only meds I take regularly are Lisinopril and Dyzaide (low dose). I have taken the Dyzaide for several years.

Took first pill (5mg) on 7/8. Second on 7/9. After lunch on 7/9, food stayed in stomach and would not digest. Felt like a huge lump. Digestion continues to be a problem. No appetite. Food does not look good. On 7/11, developed two hives with large red areas surrounding them, however, they were not itchy. Became quite tired also. Allergy symptoms of itching eyes, watering eyes, itching throat, stuffiness developed. Headaches to the point of taking a pain reliever. Developed muscle cramping in calves on 7/15. Still great difficulty eating with no appetite. Existing hiatal hernia became a problem at night with nausea. Terrible flatulence also. Exhaustion is now the description, not just tired. Feeling depressed, but perhaps that is a result of the exhaustion. Blood in urine on 7/18, the final straw. Discontinued med on 7/18. Hives have still not cleared up totally (7/28) and the tiredness has still not gone away. I have been told that when you have hives on the outside, you have hives on the inside too. I would never take this med again. Going to look into biofeedback.

Dosage: 10 mg/day-swelling of affected foot and ankle, heart arrhythmia, skin rash, sensation of skin burning, exhaustion, falling asleep in the middle of a task at noon. Originally prescribed by a general practioner after a hemorrhagic stroke in order to lower BP. A neurologist recommended doubling the dosage. I discontinued lisinopril (also had to discontinue toprol prior to being put on lisinopril because of extremely low pulse rate - under 40 bpm). I use no drugs and am using low sodium, high fiber diet to lose weight and control BP.

I was switched to lisinopril because of crappy insurance (couldn't afford what's supposed to be the good stuff). Been taking it for high BP. I'm convinced I've never really had high BP but my previous doc thought it was indicated. My previous BP med (Atacand) wasn't great but I hung tough with it. Since switching to lisinopril, I have actually thought I was dying! Burning/weak muscles, coughing when I lay down, poor sleep ability, cramps that seem to travel from one area to another in my body, memory problems, exhaustion, and on and on. All these things just sneaked up on me slowly until I finally realized that it had to be this stuff! This stuff that is supposed to be beneficial! Tuesday, July 10, I said "ENOUGH." I stopped taking it. Got an appointment with my doc on Friday. Intend to stay off this and I'm going to try to get off cholesterol med too. I think we've all been duped into thinking we need this stuff when we really don't. I'm only 52, I'm not supposed to feel like I'm dying yet. I've been monitoring my BP since yesterday when I quit taking the lisinopril and it hasn't spiked up or anything else.....yet. I have already begun to feel better. Good luck to ya'll. Sounds like we all need it.

I was on Lisinopril for one month and it took 18 months for the side effects to go away. The cough, the inexplicable weight gain, the exhaustion, the bloated tummy, aching muscles and joints, swollen eyelids, etc. Luckily, my doctor did listen to me and got me off it as soon as I could get a call through to him instead of having his nurse block calls and tell me that I could take codeine laced cough syrup. I explained to her very carefully to look at my chart--I am allergic to codeine. My doctor switched me immediately to Cozaar when I was able to talk to him directly. The pharmacist looked at what I had been on and asked why I was being switched. When I explained, he said that the side effects were commonly known and really affected people.
The coughing inflamed my bronchial tubes to where they were going into spasms. I was on an asthma inhaler for a month to heal them. That wasn't pleasant, either, because I didn't tolerate it very well.
I am at the point now that whenever I am put on a new medication, I immediately search the internet for side effects. I don't want to go through 18 months of misery because I wasn't told or the insert wasn't clear about possible side effects.

I was on Lisinopril for one month in 2005. I had the cough, exhaustion, upset stomach, weight gain (which was interesting because I couldn't eat), depression, and various aches and pains. Luckily my doctor did listen and switched me to Cozaar. It is not a generic but I haven't had any side effects and my blood pressure is actually down after being on it for two years. It did take 18 months to get over the one month of Lisinopril but there is light at the end of the tunnel when you get off it.
If I get switched to a new medication or am put on a new medication for anything, the first thing I do now is check for side effects blogs.

My side effects started within the first month of being on Lisinopril. I thought I had a cold at first but it didn't get better. I was coughing so hard that I couldn't catch my breath and could feel myself almost passing out, ended up with no energy, was depressed from exhaustion because I coughed all night, etc. I had to go to work when I all wanted to do was curl up and try to sleep. My doctor listened when I went to see him and he (the one with the MD) said that some people had terrible side effects on Lisinopril. It took close to six months to get over the cough and all of the other assorted problems.
I was put on Cozaar in place of the Lisinopril and my blood pressure is down and I have energy again!
So, the side effects are NOT imagination.

The cough didn't start immediately for me--it took about a month. I took the Lisinopril at night because of the dizzyness and that seemed to control it. I am now on Cozaar (my doctor listened to me about the side effects and the pharmacist did, too--both told me that some people do have bad reactions).
The side effects are kind of sneaky--you start out by just not feeling quite right and then you end up feeling like you would like to die but would have to feel better to do so. I ended up feeling like I was looking at the world through saran wrap. Between the cough, aching joints, exhaustion, etc., quality of life definitely bottomed out.
I have been off the Lisinopril since May and am finally starting to feel more like I did before--still get tired easily and I stress a lot easier over little things--but life is definitely better.

I have been on Lisinopril/HCTZ 20/12.5 twice a day for about three months now. I have been experiencing chest pains, head aches, and fatigue but had not attributed it to this medication, due to the side effects creeping up on me over time, until I read many of the posts on this website. My blood pressure without medication runs around 180/120 at its highest. On lisinopril it runs about 145/80. I am 32 years old and was diagnosed with hypertension when I went in for a reconstruction of a broken nose. The only immediate side effects I noticed was tremors and some muscle weakness.
I was prompted to check side effects for this medicine when my father's doctor recently doubled his dose. He takes Lisinopril as well. (I think he takes 40 mgs per day now along with another bp medication). According to my mother he started the heavier dose yesterday evening and took it again this morning and had to LEAVE WORK due to exhaustion. (He starts work at 8:00 am) He slept out in his car until 1:00 in the afternoon, worked until 4:00 and came home angry, confused, tired, said he felt like he had the flu, couldn't eat and I naturally got worried and decided to check for side effects, and I'm glad I did, man this stuff is bad news!
Has anyone had any good results with natural treatments?
Thanks,
JWC

Hi,
I wanted to give you an update on my mom.
I posted on July 17th, 2004 as I was so angry with my mom's Dr. and the drug Lisinopril.
He finally took her off the Lisinopril, and kept her on Hydrochlorothiazide. However after he did some more blood work (at my insistence, as I suspected that she was dehydrated) he ordered an electrolyte blood test. He told her he doubted that she was dehydrated due to the combination of the drugs, as she had been on the Hydrochlorothiazide for years without problems. However, he told us he was ordering the blood tests STAT. If the test revealed any of her electrolytes were low, then he would immediately take her off the hydro....... pill too.
Well, he called us that evening and told Mom to IMMEDIATELY stop taking the hydro........pill too! Mom WAS dehydrated as a result of the combination of the two drugs. The Lisinopril was the main cause of her problems and when he added it to her other BP pill, it caused her body to become totally off balance.
I just want to tell you that since she is now off BOTH pills (she still takes Cardizem for BP and Angina), she is finally back to her normal self. We just returned from a 2 week European Cruise which was wonderful but VERY busy and active, as we visited a new country practically every day. Mom was able to do every tour (with lots of walking) and was able return to the ship, get "dolled up" and was one of the first ones at our dinner table. :)
I know that every one is different and that Lisinopril may be just the right drug for some of you. However, if you are a tiny person (my mom is 4'9" and weighs only 90 lbs), then be very careful of the dosage.
Also be aware of any new symptoms once you take ANY new drug, and write the symptoms down. If they last more than one week then call your Dr. and ask him/her to change your meds.
My mom's cough has completely stopped, her eyes no longer water, her exhaustion is gone :) and she no longer feels like a "Mack Truck" hit her, making her body ache all over.
I thank God that I live right around the corner from Mom. She was convinced that it was just allergies as her Dr. had suggested, and thought it was "silly" that I insisted we go back to the Dr. for more blood tests. If I had not lived close by and had not seen her every day, I would not have known how serious her condition had become.
Even though we went to her Dr. several times with complaints of the cough, the watery eyes, the aches etc., the Dr. insisted it was allergies, and referred her to an ophthalmologist for some eye drops (which did absolutely nothing for her watery eyes).
So, a happy ending here - but only because she stopped taking the drug, which caused an enhancement of the hydro......water pill, causing the dehydration.
So just be aware of your body.

Hello all,
My doctor has prescribed Lisinopril 10 mg daily to prevent kidney damage due to diabetes. I'm wondering if anyone else has been prescribed this med for this type of treatment. (My BP is within normal range, although at the high end of normal.) I am concerned about side effects, particularly exhaustion as this seemed to affect me right after I started taking it.
Thanks!

I've been taking Lisinopril for Cardiomyopathy...along with another medication called Coreg...3 months now, just had an echogram and no improvement in heart function. Side effects - dizzy, lightheaded and complete and utter exhaustion. But I'm unsure if these are medication side effects...cardiomyopathy symptions or what. Anyone out there with cardiomyopathy and taking Lisinopril?

At 12.5 mg. per day, have noticed in past year lethargy to the point of exhaustion, falling asleep at my computer keyboard (or at least nodding off) every afternoon, depressive moods, cry off and on, & finally today feeling so sleepy all day I could hardly keep my eyes open at work. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms? As this drug also has diuretic which is necessary for fluid retention & relief, does the Atenolol have the same affect? Anyone know? Thanks.

I am trying to find out if there are any law suits filed against the makers of this horrible medication. Does anyone know of any??
I stopped Lisinopril 40 mg Aug 28th after reading comments from from this site. My life has changed drastically -- I am "ME" again. I started in Feb 2006 at 10 mg and gradually increased to 40 mg in early 2007. I became increasingly tired to the point of severe exhaustion which started with a hoarness of voice and instantly all energy just drained from my body. I became depressed in a way I knew that medicine would not help. I had diarrhea that seemed to me was caused by a change in the GI medication that changed because my insurance would not cover the one I had been on for several years. My family became concerned about my confusion, loss of caring about just about anything and refusing to leave the house only when really necessary. I was tested etc. for so many times and all tests were normal.
-- By ckc9721 | Reply | Private Message meI am still having some relapse into the above problems especially when I get really tired but I am tired because of overdoing. I am having so much fun living again.
