My husband was given a sample of this for a month-long bout of bronchitis and we are now thinking it has done permanent damage to his vocal chords. He only used it 5 times, got thrush (yeast infection) in his throat and is still hoarse after a week of being off of it. Does anyone know the history of this drug and has the word "class action lawsuit" crossed anyone's mind besides mine? I am amazed at the way pharmaceutical companies run the healthcare business in this country!
I don't want to go off on a rant here, but are people aware that a large portion of the FDA's operating budget is provided by pharmaceutical manufacturers? This isn't our first experience with this type of thing and I'm about to launch a grassroots campaign to educate the public. Maybe they'll stop believing all the marketing hype.
I'm thinking that the pharmaceutical companies ought to heed the Hippocratic oath - FIRST, DO NO HARM. Wouldn't it be a remarkably different world if they would take all the money they're spending on marketing and use it to lower the price of orphan and AIDS drugs? They keep saying that research is expensive - and advertising on every possible television show, radio and magazines is cheap? Hello? Are we going to be sheep or are we going to be citizens and hold these companies responsible for what they're doing. Thanks for letting me vent. Please contact me if you want to do something about this. And no, I'm not an attorney, but I'm a writer and I think I just found out what my first book is going to be about...

I am a 39 year old female. I have been taking Advair for about 4 years now, since a bad attack landed me in the hospital. My pulmonologist initially put me on the 500 strength and told me to take it twice daily. After a couple of week of that my skin broke out in small bumps all over the place - my face, my chest, my back, even on my scalp. I suspected the Advair, told my doctor, and she advised me to reduce to once daily. I did, and the bumps were gone within days. After a few months she decreased me to the 250 dosage and I remained on that for 3 years with no debilitating side effects. Unfortunately my doctor retired around this time and another doctor took over her practice.
About a year ago I noticed that my joints were weaker, specifically my knees, and I had one bad fall caused by complete loss of strength in my left knee. My new doctor said I might be experiencing cartilege loss but did not mention it may be from the Advair.
Then a few months ago I had got an upper respiratory infection which went into bronchitis. My doctor put me on an antibiotic that I'd never taken before and increased my Advair to 500 again. Almost immediately I began experiencing racing heart, joint pain, extreme skin sensitivity, sore throat and ear pain. I also got a yeast infection, which is something I have never had before. I still did not suspect Advair as the culprit. Although I reported all these symptoms to my doctor, he also did not mention the possibility of Advair playing any part in them. He told me it was acid reflux, although I've never had a single GI problem in my life. He told me the muscle pain was stress, for Heaven's sake. I wasn't very comforted by his diagnosis, but couldn't think of what else I could do.
One morning a few weeks ago I woke up and for some reason decided to Google Advair, and found copious documentation from reputable sites like Mayo Clinic that detailed all the possible side effects of the drug. I was floored to see that I have been experiencing so many of them.
I have now taken myself off Advair. It's been a week thus far and my breathing has not gotten any worse but the heart racing has already gone away. I also feel less ear pain. The joint pain has remained. I suspect that bone and cartilege damage done by this drug will not be reversible.
Tomorrow I have another appointment with my doctor and plan on showing him the information I printed out from the Mayo Clinic site on the effects of Advair. I do not plan to resume taking that drug.

People complaining about sore throat - the packaging says to wash your mouth and throat out after you take the medication. I started at Advair 50, then went to Advair 250, and today I'm on advair 500. The doctor said he's serious about washing my mouth out immediately after taking the medication. He said it can cause your voice to get all hoarse, or cause a yeast infection in my throat.

i am 39, female and had been using combivent for years. i felt it was not working, and dr put me on advair. i was AMAZED at how well it worked. i could run w/ my dogs, swim the length of the pool with one deep breath. i began having problems with the glands in my neck. we finally figured out i had a huge yeast infection in them from the advair. the dr had me back off and use only once a day till the infection was gone. i began using it twice a day and i have been suffering from i thought was back pain. i've been going the chiropractor over and over and nothing he had done had helped. last night the pain was the worst it has been, and my lungs started to burn. the burning went around from my back, around to the front and i could not figure out what was going on. this morning i decided to not use advair, and i have NO pain! of course, i'm using my resuce inhaler alot, and getting a breath isn't always easy, but i don't really care. i am not taking it again. AND, i can't eat meat now either. my husband fried chicken tonight, and he looked at me like i was crazy when i said i just couldn't eat it.

I have been taking advair 250/50 twice a day since September. I am experiencing oral ulcers in the roof of my mouth even though I gargle for at least 1 minute and then brush my teeth after every application. I've had a yeast infection. I also am having really intense muscle stiffness, my toes and calves and hands routinely stiffen up, you can see them moving apart. It happens about 6 times a day.

I started on Advair in June 2005. I am a public speaker and this past fall started having a lot of trouble with losing my voice. Went to the Dr. in Dec. and had a nasty yeast infection in my throat. Went on an antibiotic for 15 days and did not clear it up. Got a refill in Feb. and finally got rid of the infection. Decided I couldn't do my job on Advair, so went off of it last week. Didn't realize I might have side effects going off of it.....I am feeling very anxious, hard to concentrate and am having tingling in my arms, hands, and feet. Should I be concerned, or will these symptoms subside? Thinking I should have seen the Dr. before discontinuing - any thoughts?

On the one hand, I've had the yeast infection and now I have the hoarseness - the loss of voice.
On the other hand, Advair does a great job of controlling my asthma.
So there is no such thing as a free lunch. The question is: is the cure worse than the disease?
The jury is still out.

Within six weeks of beginning Advair I was diagnosed with a yeast infection in my mouth and throat. My headaches are severe and cannot be controlled with drugs that formerly worked. An ENT I consulted said that symptoms for which Advair is prescribed are more often caused by severe indigestion, even when one doesn't feel the effects of indigestion. I have read this elsewhere. Does anyone else know anything about this? How about any tension side effects? I don't think I've unclenched my jaws for the last month. Is this drug really a good idea?

I am so glad I found this site. I have been on and off advair for two years now. I have a serious yeast infection under my breasts that nothing will clear up. Doctors say inhaled steroids are not systemic-nonsense! That's like saying cigarette smoke doesn't go into your blood stream from your lungs-of course it does. Anything in inhaled into your lungs is systemic. Doctors are idiots who get kickbacks from drug companies. Even the pharmacist I spoke to, who should know better, denied this is caused by Advair. I only take one puff a day, and have very similar side effects to those posted here. Joint pain, hoarseness, tiredness and weight gain that never seem to drop. I would like to stop taking it but am afraid that I won't be able to breathe. I studied anatomy and know that half of what doctors tell you is wrong. Do your own research and be an informed consumer. Look at what happened with Vioxx and Phen fen. The drug companies create medicines that are worse than the condition that's treating it. I am a very angry comsumer. Don't believe what the drug companies tell you either. They hide side effects. Get yourself a good PDR and also the internet is a great tool. Good luck to all of you.

I wrote in the end of July about my husband's problems with his mouth. Since then, the dentist has done a culture from his mouth and it came back negative for yeast. Now what??? The EXPENSIVE medicine they gave him to take for a month, for the yeast infection, started clearing up his mouth, but didn't clear it up completely? If it isn't a yeast infection, what is it??? This is the only side effect that didn't heal itself after he quit the Advair. Any thoughts?

Several people have mentioned that corticosteroids (like advair) can cause yeast infections all over the body, in the mouth and throat as well. I did a google search - yeast infection thrush cure edu org (I included edu and org to make sure I came up with non-profit sites). Advair can cause thrush in the mouth. There are some simple tests to find out if you do have an infection and there is medication as well as changes in diet that can help. I've just started eating yogurt, garlic and fresh oregano and taking glucosamine and acidiphilus supplements every day. I avoid sugar and other foods that encourage yeast growth. I do feel better after a week, but I don't feel absolutely cured and will try something else if this doesn't work.

I would like to Thank all of you for taking the time to inform others about your experience of side effects from advair. I have learned so much! And I'd like to thank Guest 4309 for making the connection between yeast infection and advair. After doing a google search for yeast infection, I found many reputable sites (Duke University, urology.org, etc.) that state that steroids and corticosteroids (that's what advair is) can and do cause yeast infections (Candida, thrush, skin infections, sinsus and ear infections/itching). I AM BLOWN AWAY THAT MY ALLERGIST TOLD ME FOR A YEAR THAT THE CONTAST ITCHY THROAT and EARS and LOSS of VOICE, among other problems, WERE NOT CAUSED BY ADVAIR! Like Guest 4309 I wish I had NEVER taken advair. I am off it now and I'm taking glucosamine and acidophilus and eating lots of plain yogurt. Let me tell you, I already feel better. ANd I have sent for the book "Conquering Candida" on www.half.com for $7.50. I'll let people know what happens to me. ANd, please let us all know what works for you!

I started taking Advair about 1 1/2 years ago. Around September of last year I reported white dots on my throat to my doctor, he gave me a z-pack (over the phone). I suffered with these white dots/fungus on and off for over 6 months now and recently found out it's a yeast infection. I was prescribed a medicine you swish with. As soon as I was done with the med., I got the yeast infection back but even worse!! I have night sweats, break outs all over my body (I used to have a very clear complexion), I cough up thick chunky mucus and am tired all the time. My doctor ran a bunch of tests and found nothing else wrong and took me off Advair immediatly. Now what? I did great on Serevent and Flovent inhalers and now all they have is disks! I'm afraid to take more disks, I just want to start feeling better.

My son (9) was on advair off and on for a while for severe asthma. I noticed depression, anxiety, fatigue and fibromyalgia type pains all over his body. I had him checked for lupus and other diseases and all negative. He also developed a severe rash between his legs causing much pain and discomfort as he had to walk like a bull-legged horse-riding cowboy. Showering often never helped. I assume he has candidis yeast infection(systemic). He was finally put on Prozac and I took him off Advair against my doctors advice. i took him off slowly and your body may need to make it's own steriods and not go into shock. He takes as much albuterol as needed to get him better and then i give him prednisone for 3 days when things become an emergency. tTe prednisone leads my son to anger and suicide but it goes away after he finishes his course, but it saves his life. He is now 13 and much happier and his face and body has thinned out by half. I will never give my son Advair again.
