Just had mine inserted..it wasn't a pleasant experience at all as my cervix kept tightening up. I didn't feel well the rest of the day, cramping, bleeding, and fatigue. Better today. I hope I don't develop further problems/
What surprises me about this site is that many of the things you are describing are listed by the pharmaceutical company and the FDA as warnings and precautions as well as possible side effects. My doctor went through all of these step by step with me. I have a follow up appointment in 4 weeks and then another at 12 weeks then annually...all to check the device.
Yes, it is terrible that you had to go through these things, but this is a foreign device that is inserted in your body to deliver progesterone...if you are breast feeding, this will get to your infant; you are at risk for an infection; you are at risk for it to move/dislodge; it is a hormone and you may have adverse effects; it shouldn't be used if you have fibroids; immediate postpartum use is cautioned.
I am glad you are sharing your experiences, but I think it would be even more useful to report them to the FDA. Thanks.

I have had Mirena for about nine months now and I absolutley hate it. I have mood swings all the time, when I get a period it's very light but lasts 10-14 days! Not to mention I have had no sex drive (if anyone else has had this problem please email me at dillardd_06@yahoo.com) since it was placed and I have noticed a dry itchy scalp and dizziness. When the doctor put it in I sat up and a pool of blood spilled out on to the floor, I also got extremely dizzy and got really warm like I was having a heat flash. I cramped the whole day! I'm so glad I found this website I am making an appt to have this removed ASAP!

Well ladies and even gents, who may be concerned about your loved ones. I am an African-American/Puerto-rican woman of age 23 with no kids. I had Mirena placed in about 3 months ago and to be honest- I love it and I hate it.

I've cramped tremendously, have had prolonged periods, and a dry/flaky scalp but it's much better than my ultimate hypothetical fear. I've been a little be nerved lately but I can control myself but it feels as if my nasal passages have become smaller. At first I thought it came from allergies which I don't have and then since I've moved back to Germany it could only lead to one thing-this anchor I have inserted in me.

I know the first day I had it inserted I was totally delirious.I immediately laid back down on the doctors chair and cramped for appr 10 min. I couldn't even drive home; in which i happened to puke outside while I was waiting for a stop light.

But to counter the negatives I haven't gained any weight. My face is clear-thanks to Clarins, and I'm assured that I will not get pregnant. I couldn't be any happier.

To be honest, since I haven't had an children I'm thinking about taking it out; side effects are totally relative and one day when I do want to have children I might be sterile. Additionally, the relativity of all our side effects are not even worth the exposure-esp. if it's for a bloke.

i am 26 years old and i had my daughter 5/3/2008, at my 6 week i had mirena put in because of the wonderful idea of not having to worry about taking a pill! the day i had it put in i bled like i was on the heaviest period i've every had and i continued to bleed for the next 7 weeks. every day i would at least have one bright, red gush of blood, one day i even had cramping so bad that it felt like labor.... i had a HORRIBLE labor! this wasn't how it was supposed to be, my sister came over to watch my daughter while i curled up in ball for about 4 hours until i took my last loratab from giving birth!!!! i had a strange pain in my left leg daily that ran from my groin area to my knee, i had severe depression to the point that i stopped breast feeding, was so irritated with anything and everything and i cried every day. i hadn't done this while pregnant or the first 6 weeks at all!! i lost all of my baby weight in about 2 weeks after giving birth ( i only gained 17lbs ) but since having mirena put in i've gained at least 7 lbs back. my stomach bloated up so huge it looked like i was 4 months pregnant, even when i would shower and rubbed the soap on my my belly it was very tender to the touch. i also suffer from ibs and with mirena i have never had such horrible, horrible stomach aches and constantly going to the bathroom.needless to say i had it removed 4 weeks ago and the very same day my mood changed dramatically and the bleeding stopped. the weight isn't going anywhere though which makes me sad although i think a good, daily cardio workout will help that. i'm still losing alot of hair, i'm a hair stylist so i know to expect some, but it's pretty extreme. my stomach is still a little bloated but it is improving and no longer hurts to the touch and the ibs has improved dramatically .... i think every woman should be well warned on what's involved with this drug, do your research. i DO NOT recommend this to anyone, it is not worth the pain and depression. having a newborn is hard enough and adding all of these side effects made me feel like my very stable, loving home and family was falling apart. DO NOT GET THIS PUT IN YOUR BODY!

I have had Mirena since March 08, didnt hurt but did cramp. I bled for 2 weeks, and have every month since, like a normal period and then spotting. I just started getting acne on my back and chest and forehead...did not realize why it would not go away, I have always had dry hair, now it is getting oily, same as my face. I also have gained about 5 lbs. I'm not so sure this was what I thought it would be. If it hasn't changed by dec(next pap,) I am done!

I had Mirena inserted on 08-07-08, So far so good with me.
My only complaint is that i am still spotting but according to the Dr. this is normal for a few more months.
Honestly i don't have any other issues with it.

Every women's body will react differently it just depends on your body.

Well I had my mirena inserted in 5/08 and I went to dr today for my yearly exam and to get it removed because of depression, hair loss, tiredness, joint ach and headaches all of that stuff. So while when he went to do my pap he was looking for the strings and he couldn't find them and he couldn't feel them either so he asked me if it fell out and I said not that I know of so now I have a lost mirena somewhere. So he said he would start the process to have it removed and I told he had to find it first. It was all I could do not to cry but I just have to laugh cause crying is bad I will see what happens

OMG- I wish I had read this before I had this thing put in. Its been in about 4 months, I bled for 6 weeks after having it put in (which was painful), my cramps during that time felt like someone was stabbing me (worse then labor pains) I lost so much of my hair, which is coming back ( I thought the hair loss was from the after pregnancy) that I still have a receding hairline. The bottoms of my feet always hurt, my stomach always looks bloated and I cant loose the extra 10 pounds (which I gained after having it put in) I have absoluted NO DRIVE, feel depressed all the time, feel no pleasure in anything that I cant even enjoy my infant son. My boyfriend calls me crazy and unstable because I am so moody. WOW, I am calling to make an appointment to have this taken out ASAP

so i posted on here a week ago to see if i was going crazy. turns out i wasn't. i have had this horrible mirena for a month now and the side effects are not getting better so i called the doctor today and said i wanted it out. the girl that answered the phone put me on hold went to talk to the doctor and said the doctor was going to call me and she scheduled me a day to get it out. the doctor called me this evening asked me what was going on and i told her that i was feeling really depressed, having a hard time sleeping, horrible back pain that my kidneys hurt and that i was sick of this bc and want it out. she told me that the mirena should not be causing these side effects that that it had to be something else. i told her that i have never had these issues before getting the mirena. i dont see why all these doctors think we are the ones that are going nuts. what is the big deal in wanting it taken out if its not right for you? she finally agreed to take it so i have an apt thurs so we shall see if i go back to being NORMAL after its removed. i will keep you posted.

also does anyone know of any other bc that does not have a risk for blood clots? that was the whole reason for me being put on mirena cause there was no risk for that. i have had them in the past from and IV and no doctor will put me back on normal bc.

When my son was 6mos old I had the Mirena placed. I had spotting for about 6 weeks (which I was informed would probably happen so I wasn't too upset about that.) The 4th month of having the Mirena I started getting severe anxiety, mood swings and bloating. I also have an itchy, flaky scalp that started around 3 or 4 months after placement. I never made the connection that all of this could be caused from the Mirena until today when I had it removed because my husband and I want to have another child. After I had it removed I went home and took a nap. Literally, 2 or 3 hours after it was removed I felt like myself again. I was on the verge of an emotional break down and didn't know why...and I just thought I had better pick myself up and quit whining. It felt like my life was spiraling out of control but nothing external was happening to make me feel so panicked all of the time. I thought it was an odd coincidence that I felt better all a sudden. That's what prompted me to check online to see if anyone else had experienced this. Anyway, after I read a lot of the entries I felt relieved and hopeful to continue to feel like myself again.

I hate mirena. I had mirena for a year and a half. I had bleeding with intercourse, headaches, cramping, hair loss, depression, and swollen lymph nodes. I overall just didn't feel good. The strings migrated upward into my uterus. The doctor tried to "fish" the strings out, but had no luck and had to schedule a d&c to remove it. It ended up costing me about 4-5 grand for a small piece of plastic that has gave me nothing but trouble. I still have not had a period and can't get pregnant and it has been 5 months post mirena. My lymph nodes have gone back to normal now..just no period and no baby.

Mirena is the worst decision I have made as far as a contraceptive. I have been hospitalized because of heart pains assuming heartburn since all turned out fine) then one month exactly I had heart burns again. I have had the Mirena since 3/08 and have an appt tomorrow to have it removed. I'm going back to my birth control this is just awful. When I went to my doctor one month ago he felt the heart pains isn't related to the Mirena and suggest I keep it since I was at my 6 month stage. I said ok, and here it is approx 1 month later and I still HATE IT!!!. I have lower back pain, mood swings and awful pain during intercourse. One night I couldn't even move that's how bad my bu** was aching it felt like that little Mirena was coming out my bu**(sorry for being graphic). We all need to complain to this company and like another woman said print all of this for our doctor. I wish everyone the best of luck and I hope all is well w/ my uterus. I will keep you all informed.

Wow!! I have had Mirena now for 2 years. I have a 6 year old and my son is 2. I want another baby just not right now. The pill was out of the question bc I always forgot to take it and thats how we got our son and the shot messed up my periods really bad so my doctor suggested Mirena. I didnt feel it when they put it in and I dont feel it to this day. My husband says he can feel it during sex sometimes but its no big deal. I cannot think of any major side effects. If I have a period, which is like once every 3 months, it is so short and light all I need is a small pad. I still cramps but I just take tylenol and they go away. I don't have lower back pain and I might have gained some weight but thats my fault bc I dont exercise nearly enough and I dont watch what I eat. My skin has never looked better. I just want women to know that Mirena is not all bad like everyone makes it out to be. Every woman is different and this form of contreceptive may not be for everyone.

This is a horrifying method of birthcontrol! I had mine put in on 8/18 and it was AWFUL! The worst pain I have ever had in my life! After the doctor "forced" it in, I was aplolgized to and told that since I have never had a vaginal birth that there were suppose to give me something to soften my cervix. Well...needless to say it was not soft and it was thick and hard! So you can only imagine what my friend heard in the waiting area and how shocked she was to hear me scream to the top of my lungs. How embarrassing that was for me. I cramped I was bleeding I was miserable!!! I didn't sleep that night because I was cramping so bad. The next day around 5:30 that afternoon I lost it. I started crying and could not stop. All I could tell my husband is that I wanted it out! It made me emotional, depressed and confused all within 24 hrs. Oh...plus they left me on my birthcontrol pills and told me to finish those out then stop taking them. You can only imagine what hormones were going on in my body. By the end of the night my husband told me to call immediately the next morning and have it removed. I called the dr. office told them I wanted it out and had it removed. Within an hour or two I felt so much better and improved daily. Two days later I started bleeding and it has lasted about 5 days. All I can say is DO NOT DO IT!!!! I am on the pill and will stay that way until my husband decides to have a vesectomy..

I had Mirena put in on August 15th. It hurt like crazy. Worse than labor pains. I had it put in on what should have been the last day of my cycle. Well that was 11 days ago and I am still bleeding. I cramp some and i have had very blurry vision. I did not have a sex drive being on the pill and that has not changed. I am going to try to wait it out a little longer to see if it gets better. I have several friends that have it and they love it. We will see.

I've had Mirena for about 14 months now. Yeah, I HATE it.
The day they put it in, I was in the category where it took forever to place. Like 3-4 tries to place it. Thank God I'd had experience in handling this type of pain, having 2 children w/out epidurals.

I bled for 6 weeks straight, so the day I went for my follow-up, I stopped bleeding. Figures. I'm looking at the brochures in the office for a different type of contraceptive. The doctor thinks I'm stupid, why would I want to do that? Um, because it pokes my husbands penis head and I can see the red poke marks on it. So the doc trims the tail and loses a piece of it somewhere inside me. CRAZY!

The following month, I really started having low back pain. Then I herniate my L-5. I'm not sure that any of that is related to the IUD. Just speculating. Also speculation, I battled with thrush the entire 13 months I nursed my son. That was never the case with my first child.

So I go about a year with out a period that I can really speak of. Maybe some spotting, but I haven't thought about the thing much. Although, I don't remember ever having a positive thought about it. I could feel it during sex. I can't explain that feeling, but, it's like I could feel it poking my husband at times.

Now, I am having some CRAZY stomach bloat and I'm extremely exhausted. My back is still constantly hurting me. I'm spotting ALL the time. Mostly brown blood, though. Does that mean it's old blood? Every time I have sex, I will spot within the 2nd day. I've held off going to get it removed simply because I don't have insurance and am not looking to get pregnant again. However, I know that it needs to be done. There is something wrong inside me. I never had the weight gain issues other women had. But I am up 5 pounds right now and my belly looks to me like I'm 4 months prego. Matter of fact, I'll probably take a home test tomorrow so I don't have to pay for one at the GYNO.

Anybody know much about getting pregnant with an IUD? And why are doctors so gung-ho for IUD's? Is it because they are like $2000?

i do believe this is the most horrific form of birth control ever created. i had this suggested as a birth control option after giving birth to my 3rd child. after having a bad experience in labour there was no way i wanted anymore. i wouild love to have a hysterectomy. hrt. i could probably cope with alot better than being put through hell asnd back every month.
mine was suggested my my gynaecologist and i do suffer strange reactions to anaesthietic so seemed to be a good idea to have this put in to see if it worked. how wrong was i. i was a very very angry person. i never ever suffereed any nervous conditions before so this was new to me when i completely lost the plot. i was put on beta blockers and i thought i was having a heart attack on them. i suffered worse periods . cramps fatigue . headaches . my skin is still spotty. i always had a lovely complexion before this. my immune system isnt what it used to be. the list went on and on. i didnt like it at all. i asked for removal and they said i had to wait for another gynaecology appointment. i knew all the side effects were off this thing in me. i had to wait for an appointment to get it remioved./ said 9 months was the normal wait. i think they get paid to test run this contraception. and at what cost? our health

i will voice my opinion about this as its disgusting how much these fat cat pharmacutical companies profit on what should be free to british citizens.its getting so bad in the nhs we are told to get seen quicker we have to pay. but 20 or 30 years ago people would have laughed at that.

has any real tests ever been carried out on what is in these devices and how it affects so many women in a really bad way.

my problem was when i finally got a sypmathetic locum doctor at my gp surgery to agree to remove it. she asked me to give a sample for pregnancy. can you imagine how hysterical i was . yes i was pregnant. so much for the 99.9 % effectiveness. that meant i couldnt have it removed. one idiotic nurse congratulated me

i screamed are you insane woman . congratulations!! what is wrong with you? do i look happy?

the doctor was more sympathetic. everything was a daze at first. she explained chances are i will either miscarry or have the baby and dispel it in childbirth. on my own again. i had a miscarraige 2 days later. not impressed with this at all. i then had to wait 2 weeks for an emergency scan as chances were it came away complete.

how did i feel .angry. empty. physically and mentally drained. i think if i could have i would have ripped that thing right out of me

so i had the scan. luckily it had came away. i begged them to take it out. sent me back to the doctors a week later. and they removed it. i refused to do another pregnancty test said , please just get on with it.
two hours later i was feeling alot calmer.

i so thorougly enjoyed having that thing removed for good . never again would i have that in me. or any other coil.

however this is the beginning of a very upsetting case of long term side effects at there worst.

i decided to get sterilised after all this . understandable as being highly fertile sex was a big issue and i wouldnt meet anyone let alone sleep with a man. fear was the biggest thing. getting pregnant was a big no no.

i got sterilised. this is where the problems start for 3 months periods would be getting worse. horrific migraines. couldnt fathom it. my cramp was bad before but god this was like hell. about 6 months passed and steadily was getting worse each month. no amount of painkillers would help. and i could see in myself my skin gettin worse. spots. my eyes feeling tired. red sometimes. itchy and dry. feeling sick and tired. then unable to get any sleep on a night. catch 22 . cant sleep then cant get up .i could sleep all day and night no doubt if it was possible . mood swings very bad depression. so much so i had a breakdown in december 07. i took 6 weeks off work and it helped somewhat .but still the periods and bad painsdwere getting worse. i am not a whimsy sort of person. cramp is tolerable this is so bad i cry and cry and wonder why i have to be suffering like this every 3 weeks. i nearly pass out with the pain. i do not like going to see my gp as i find them no use at times. feel like a conveyor belt and you lucky to get ten minutes as the norm is 5. i finally went up to the doctors july 08 and he gave me lots of pills and said i shouldnt mess with mother nature and get sterilised. i dont think he got that right. i still blame that coil. my depression is quite bad at times. my pain is a constant dull ache in my abdomen still. i feel like its on fire when i have my period. i have to work out when i am due on my period and take a week off work. its really bad. i end up in bed. due to the fact i cannot stand upright. it is so bad it feels like labour. but its excrutiating. i feel ive aged alot in the last yr too. i cry most days as i am so tired and feel myself dreading the next one. i try to remain positive and think it will last a week and then i will have two weeks where its not so bad. but my cycle is so messed up that i suffer headaches a week after the bleeding and i am still suffering occasional contractions. if anyone has any experience like this i would be grateful of some sort of assistance be it advise or medical. i dont mind any sort of critical opinion either. i have a very open mind to all sorts of issues so will take any advise on board. i may see an end to my battle of suffering. i am waiting for another hospital appointment to see my gynaecologist and hopefully it will be very soon.

tracy.

I have a 17 and 9 year old and I'm 37. I figured this would work better for me than the pills. I had it "installed" in May...at least that's what it felt like!!! It was HORRIBLE for me to have it inserted. I swear they actually put it in my tonsils and not my uterus. I had severe cramping for a week and I almost went to the ER. After that, I have had an occasional quick cramp here and there and a day of what makes me think of "old period". Light enough for just a liner, not a pad.

I have had NO side effects with the Mirena, THANK GOD! It was a great choice for me. Other than the horribly painful insertion, everything else has been great!

Hey everyone, I have had issues too. Mine started when I had my Mirena placed. I was 5 weeks post partum. Felt great before that. I had a c-section and still was ok.
About a month later I realized my legs were always sore. It felt like I wore 5" heels and walked 5 miles the night before. Even the bottom of my feet hurt.
I started to put 2 and 2 together and also noted my migraines, light headedness and extremely tired, not to mention my sex drive went from 8 to zero!

I called my OB and they said I have to see my primary Dr because they won't see me for leg cramps. I told the nurse it is b/c of the Mirena...blah blah blah.

I went to my Primary Dr who knows nothing about birth control (or not as much as an OB). He said post pregnancy will bring on things like anemia and thyroid issues.

I was ok until I had this put in. I know my blood work will come back ok and that makes me so mad!

I go in Oct for my 6 mo checkup with the OB and I am having it removed. It is not worth how I feel. I don't want another baby right now but I guess it is back to the pill and calendar method.

So, I am having some real pain I think is associated with the Mirena....is there not a way that we can take any action about this? You see all the time where people on certain drugs have a class action lawsuit or something, this thing is bad, not, exactly ruinging my life bad, but pretty bad.

I have had this Mirena for two years and not my husband says he can feel it. In addition to that I have horrible headaches, cramps. I have bled for as much as two months. My "old" doctor gave me pills to stop the bleeding. I am hating this. I am getting it out next month. All my "old" doctor says is it does not sound like the Mirena to me. Any body had problems similiar to this one. Feel free to email me at Fuller4500@yahoo.com if you have any thoughts.

Thank god I found this web site!!! I have had the Mirena in for 4 months now! So I'm not going crazy as well! I have been experiencing the same side affects: awful Headaches days & weeks on end, no sex drive , moody, Depressed, stomach pain, just not feeling like my self! etc. I wanted to have the paraguard put in, but was pressured into getting the mirena! terrible choice!! I called today to make a appointment to get this thing out ASAP!! Why arn't these company's required to do more testing on this crap! They don't care about people's health they just want to make a buck!!

I had mirena since 08/08 and I HATE it. I have had nothing but MAJOR mood swings, hot flashes, dizziness, insomnia, depression. I have put my husband and 3 and 2 year old's thru he** just so we don't have any more children right now. It is so not worth it. The pain during insertion was worse than my 35 hours of hard back labor. I had to be dilated 2 times to have it inserted, I was shaking, covered in sweat and sobbing by the time it was over. My poor husband just looked at me and said he was so sorry I went thru that. I am calling my Dr 1st thing in the morning and demanding that it be removed immediately. I am at the point that if I could find the strings I would pull it out myself. Don't get one, it is not worth it. I guess know on from the FDA had to get on inserted!

I just got mine in three days ago. Starting last night (which wasn't long ago because I have been up the whole time!), I got a nasty migraine, lower back pain (been there for 2 days) and I feel so uncomfortable and restless at night and I also got this disgusting taste in my mouth that will not go away. If I have to have someone violate my poor cervix to get it out...I might just have to wait to take it out and bare it. Unless I develope acne, weight gain or any of the other symptoms you ladies have mentioned. Never had a baby, don't want one, and have had a boyish life so maybe it has something to do with my body not wanting me to be a girl so much!! HA! Kidding. Oh yeah, mild pain, MY ARSE!! Breaking a bone felt a million times better than getting that thing inserted. I have never actually cried out in pain before, so you can imagine I was a little embarassed. Cramps last into the next day but go away from then on?? Yeah flippin right.

I have mirena since March 2007 and it's fell owful. My first symtoms were nauseas, headache, and spoting all the times, but since one year I have only headaches and cramps, sometimes when it is time for my period and because I don't have no more I have a brown discharge that smell so bad ev en you can smell it from far away. No drive and moody. They put mirena because they said that I have the uterus linen so thick and Mirena can put this linen thin, but i been suffering with a lot of side effects and I told my Doctor but she said is not Mirena it's me.

hello again I posted on the 22nd of Aug. So update.. I went to the doc as promised, no help I dont understand why doctors dont listen to u they act like it but they jus nodd their head and already have a dx for u. I went and said I am very depressed and feeling crying right now doc. ummhumm, has anything changed in ur life. no everything is the same i dont know whats going on with my body but i think its the mirena. umm hum doc says. Oh remember the constent yeast infections, well here take this pill and 7 day cream, i dont think none of what u are saying has to do with the mirena but you can have it removed anytime. You would have had the side effects when u first got the mirena inserted not now . I tell her I think my IUD is gone haywire and i want it out.

I had my Mirena removed just this past Wednesday after suffering for 2 1/2 years with every single one of the symptoms all of you have complained of. Major weight gain and inability to lose any; acne; constant flu-like muscle aches; extreme irritablity; bloated; leg, face, hands & ankle edema; random nausea & dizziness; forgetfulness; cold intolerance; eczema on my hands; elevated blood pressure; hair loss ... I felt like a 90 year old 36 year old.

After endless complaining to a very dear friend (who is 42 and was researching BC because her doctor took her off of the pill) she had come across this forum as well as the few others like this and sent me the links. It never dawned on me that it could be the Mirena, so I made an appointment to have it removed.

So, I had it removed this past Wednesday ... just a slight twinge and it was out...nothing at all like having it inserted ... and feel better already. I started my period pretty much as soon as I got home from the doctor (hadn't had one in 1 1/2 years), although I've read some women take a few days/weeks to start up again ... and for the last couple of evenings I've had some pretty intense cramps (never had them before) ... but at least the bloat this time feels NORMAL for me for being on my period.

My doctor said it'll take probably 2-3 months to get back to normal as far as everything else is concerned, but she wasn't surprised at all of all of the symptoms I had being Mirena-related, especially when I'd told her that my periods stopped completely. It's my own guess that the 20% who stop bleeding altogether are the ones most sensitive to the hormone and will more than likely have the most problems from it. I figured for me, anyway, if something is too good to be true, it's because it is. *lol*

I'm just thankful my darling husband has been so supportive and has had no problem weathering out my storm, so to speak.

Good luck to all of you that are having problems ... and listen to your bodies. This might be the perfect alternative for some women, but everyone's body is different.

HI! I posted on 8/18 and let me tell you this has been the worst week of my life. My antidepressant did not work for my PMDD and I was waay crazy, my husband was about to admit me into the stress center. I called my doc to have the IUD removed after reading your posts and they said my symptoms were not mirena side effects and actually made me feel bad about making the decision to have it inserted! saying I must have really forced the doctor into giving it to me. I was supposed to have an appt to check for PID and infection but I went to my reg doc and got an appt for a tubal, cuz I am not going through this anymore. I'm not bleeding during my period, but I have terrible side pain. THis site really saved me!! Thanks

This site has been a god send. I had mine placed 2 weeks ago and its been horrible. I've been telling myself that everything is going to be fine, but its hard to believe that. Getting it put in put me in tremendous pain. I could barely walk and i had to work a 10 hour shift an hour later. After 2 days the pain went away but i started to notice random bouts of depression. Ive been a totally different person, Im happy and laughing one minute and the next im in tears over nothing! What made things worse was I was starting to feel nervous and shaky on top of wanting to cry all the time. I figured it had to do with Mirena because ive felt this way once before and that was when i tried the depo shot. Within the last few days ive noticed an unusual discharge and itching. Ive been thinking it might be a yeast infection but i have never had one. Its just one more thing im contributing to Mirena. I dont want to get it removed because its nice not worrying about pills or condoms but at the same time I think Mirena is making me crazy. Reading these posts really helped me regain some of my sanity. Ive also heard from many people who used to have an IUD that as soon as they had theirs removed they got pregnant. I know to use condoms but i dont trust them, accidents happen.

My son was born March 2007, when he was 8wks old, to much of my surprise I found out that I was pregnant again. Mirena sounded perfect!!!! I had it placed 7 weeks after my 2nd son was born in Jan 2008. I had what I still assume is normal with any type of birth control method, irregular bleeding, cramping, some slight mood swings. That all seems normal to me when you mess with you body like that. Aug 1, 2008 I woke up at4am with awful abdominal pain sooo bad that I turned to my husband and said that I think I have to go to the hospital. I decided that if I could fall back asleep then its probably nothing major. I fell back asleep (or passed out, I don't know) The next morning I was hurting so bad I couldn't lift anything, couldn't stand up straight, felt weak and felt as though I had rocks in my stomach but had an empty feeling at the same time. The pain was all over my abdomen, stabbing, shooting, pinching. I also had pain aroung my belly button and a noticeable discomfort about my pevic bone. Finally I called my husband to come home, went to the hospital, they took blood, cultures, did an exam and did a ctscan. All normal! WHAT!! Aug 11th still having pain and now having MAJOR HOT FLASHES. I find myself getting so hot and irritated that I cant be around the babies because I am afraid I will yell at them. If I get in a little disagreement with my husband it will most likely end with me saying I want a divorce (I noticed another lady with that same problem) Today I had a ultra sound done and it came back what my (new) doctor says is normal. The problem with that is that one of my ovaries is split and is NOW shaped like a horse-shoe. I was pregnant for almost 2yrs straight and had lots of ultrasounds NOT ONE TIME did anyone say anything about a odd ovary. I'm just going to make a educated guess that it wasn't deformed till after the Mirena. Now I am wanting to remove it but feel like I should get every test known to man first to rule out any other possibility. I really don't want to remove it. I am afraid of getting it removed and even more of getting pregnant when I already have two 10 months apart and still in diapers.
My biggest question is wanting to know if hot flashes are related or if I might be having something else going on. Am I the only one with he hot flashes? I have them all day long!!!!!!!!
Also I noticed after reading other post that some other things may be related like, piercing headaches, itchy flaky oily scalp, weight gain, ear drainage, lower back pain, oily skin, increased smoking, in-grown hairs in inner thigh area, joint pain, fatigue, decrease sex drive.

headache, nausea, moody, hot, difficulty sleeping, chubby, chubby chubby - even the neighbors have noticed! I was wondering if the IUD could have caused all of this, or if it was just my age, 42. After reading all of this, I'm pretty sure it's the "thing"

I'm so glad I found this site. I've had my Mirena for only 5 months, but since then I've had horrible depression (very severe), hot flashes, night sweats, anxiety, headaches, complete loss of any pleasure in anything, no sex drive AT ALL. I'm making an appointment on Monday to have this removed. I've been seeing a psychiatrist for a few months and being treated with antidepressants and Ativan for anxiety and Prozac for the week before my period for severe PMDD. I never had these issues before. Oh my God. I hope the Mirena is causing it. The idea that I could be 'normal' again is giving me so much hope.

I had mine inserted about two weeks ago. It was slightly uncomfortable. Not a big deal at all. A little bleeding and cramping. Haven't had sex yet due to horrible gas that I have had for two weeks. My husband is convinced that is how it works, because your husband won't touch you....he he he...
We will see.
I have had terrible anxiety issues in my past and I haven't had a problem with mood swings or panic attacks.
I am hoping this will work. I have three children and currently my husband is taking medication for lupus that can cause huge birth defects. So sick of condoms!!!1

I had my son July of 06. at my 6 wk i had it inserted. For some reason my body wasn't adjusting to it. Just constant bleeding, discharge and headache. so in Jan of 07 I had it removed.I became preg in Oct 07, it was ectopic. My new OB did a HSG found out that my tubes actually have blockage. This wasn't a problem before. I ve never had a STD, PID or anything. Then i was rushed to the ER two weeks ago and gues what another ectopic. This time it ruptured. The worst pain ever!!! I think this is from the IUD but of course all the doctors say it isn't? Why else would this be happening? From what i understand they say that the blockage is right at the part of my tubes that is at the uterus. So now I am on the pill because emotionally i can't go through losing another baby

It's me again! So, either this is the weirdest coincidence ever, or just another lovely side effect of mirena. I had a baby in march08, in may08 I had mirena put in. Strangely, my 2month old started spitting up A LOT. And I'm not talking a little spitting up, I'm talking half or more of what she ate came back up.I am nursing and supplementing. She would spit up breast milk and formula. We tried everything, no dairy, nutramigen formula, nothing really helped. But thurs, the day after mirena was removed, she barely spit up at all and today she hasn't spit up any. I know some of the hormone is excreted in the milk, but can it make your little one sick? All things point to yes.

Oh my oh my, reading all ur posts is like ive written it myself. I thought i was going bonkers, i think i did actually!! I was on the pill for 16yrs and came off it to have my 1st child, aged 34. Never had any probs with the pill. I had my mirena coil fitted 2.5yrs ago and have had no end of thrush, discharge, itchy vagina and sharp cramping pains on my left. Greasy hair and falling out in shed loads. No weight gain or spots tho. I had the coil removed 2wks ago, that was hell in itself!!!!!!!!!! was looking for the gas and air!!! it took 2 nurses and 4 extremely painful tugs before it finally came out.I was nearly having to go to hosp to have it removed. The nurse said it had embedded into my skin. Bled due to the removal, but then it mustve triggered my period, which lasted just under 2wks. I have never felt so crap in all my life. Within a day i felt low, tearful, sad, headache everyday, face full of spots and very dry head to the point of bad dandruff. Still having cramps and period type backache, i don't feel as low, but still feel chocked & huge sore boil spots. Nice...not. This must be the 'crash' that ive only learn about from everyone on here, not my doctors, which is where u think u'd here it from. Thank all of u women willing to confide.

i had mine since 2004 and I thought it was great, I haven't had a period for over 3 yrs. just the pms , after insertion i had the cramping and then my light period went away completely but now in 2008 still now period but a spot that represents my periods and added to my fake periods yeast infections every month for four months now, i went to my doc a 3rd time and he said im having hormonal imbalance that might be causing the yeast infections and it might clear up on its own the 3rd one did clear up in about a week and half so this month guess what i had another yeast infection which makes 4 , so i have a appt me with my reg doc . besides the yeast infections, i have a white discharge , depression, fatigue .

I can't believe this many people have had side effects with Mirena. I do not have any children, but thought this was the best birth control method for me. I had it inserted in May 2007.Intense cramping for about 1/2 hour after the insertion and then light cramping for a couple of days. For the first 6 months or so I loved having it and not worrying about birth control. Then all the bad side effects began. I get many headaches, and I have absolutely NO sex drive what so ever! Then my breasts are tender for a few days a week and I have brown discharge about every 1 1/2 weeks that lasts for a couple of days. I was never moody before during my periods, and my husband has even commented on how terrible my mood swings are lately. I can't wait until I get it out (2 more weeks!!!)

i have had mirana since july28 2004. i never had any problem with it i though it was a god'sent UNTIL NOW!! over the last 2 years i have had irregular bleeding, odd pain among other things. the bleeding started normal and but now it is very very dark clots and pain OMG it feels like i am being stabbed all the time. i have been to the doctors over and over and over .. they say it is not a side effect it is all in my head. well let me tell you i am a nurse and i know my body like you all do and something is wrong. i am due for it 2b changed and i want it out. i am so afraid of PID or sepsis. i have weird chalky discharge sometimes. and i have been tested for anything and everything under the sun STD wise so i know the pain and all the problems are from this. i have no energy and i am "sad" most of the time. i do not handle stress the way i used to .. my husband says i have changed. not for the bad per say just different. we have 2 children and thought this would be perfect but we were so wrong. good luck to you all... i know lots of women who have it and are fine. but the ones with a problem with it oh man do we ever have a problem...

I am 28 years old and have an 8 year old child I have had mirena for about 7 months....I really thought this was going to be the best thing ever. It all sounded so good those doctors can be really good sales people. My biggest problem is PANIC ATTACKS never had them before and i don't wish them on anyone you feel like you have no control over what your body is doing, My first panic attack started last Firday and i am still not recovered from it. I am having heart palpitations like crazy, headaches, foggy vision, night sweats and the Acne has been out of control for a while...I can't wait to get mine removed tomorrow. I don't think most people know that little thing called mirena can really mess with your body bad.. If i could turn back time I wouldn't of gotten it but i didn't know about all these side effects... Don't Get Mirena it's not with the trouble.

I had my Mirena put in about 7 months ago, since then i have been getting sicker and sicker. I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism in June, but my TSH level is almost back to normal now and I still feeling so ill. I have gained 15 pounds, feel very emotionally unstable, I'm moody, fatigued, have constant joint and muscle pain! I am so depressed and no matter what i do I just can't feel better! I just want to die! My husband had a hunch that it could be the IUD causing this all and started researching it. He found this website and read to me what everyone had said. I was shocked! I'm a nurse so i got off the phone with him and removed it myself, which I do not recommend if you are not a health care professional. I'm sure it's just in my head, but I feel better already! I hope that all of my symptoms resolve now, but either way that is one less thing that could be causing my symptoms. I hope this helps others and let me know if you also had joint and muscle pain! Thanks and GOOD LUCK to you all!

Pam
