Hospital forgot to take iv out?

Are there any medications a hospital would send you home with the IV tube still in your hand? Our son's biological mother has an Iv in her hand, claims the ER forgot to remove it. We are just wondering, she's had history of sexual diseases, we want to keep our son safe. Thanks
