WOW, I am so happy to find this site. I am a 56 yr old female. I too am on Toprol. I was on 75 mg 2 x's a day for HPB and mitral valve prolapse pain. Then yesterday the Dr. increased my dose to 100 mg 2x's a day .Today my ankles and feet blew up like balloons. I have been having profuse sweating and was cold and clammy for the past year and no Dr could tell me why!! NO sex drive , depression, sleep apnea, severe insomnia, brain fog, short term memory issues, moody, irritable, my husband has threatened to leave me. NO appetite!! Floaters in my eyes started a few months ago, I have so many symptoms that I have read in all your posts. No quality of life for the past year. I have felt like I was losing my mind, gained 35 lbs in past 2 years without changing my eating habits. I gained the weight after I had lost 50 lbs. Been on Toprol about 2 1/2 years ( I think ) Every symptom I have experienced I have read in your posts!! I have type 2 diabetes and am on glucophage, I also take 10 other scripts. I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, RSD in my left arm, muscle pain and joint pain. Pain in my right upper qaudrant. Nausea/ some vomiting, NO ENERGY, Loss of interest in most of life. So now after reading all your posts I have to ask myself, are all my symptoms linked to the Toprol and not syndromes or illnesses? I am calling my doctor in the morning and getting off this med!! They will just have to put me on something else!!! So how do I post to receive replies? Joyce47oh

I took Toprol for about 12 years. I recently developed high blood sugar. After some research, I found articles linking Neurontin (which I took for peripheral neuropathy) to high blood sugar & my doctor switched me to Lyrica which works better. Further research uncovered articles about studies which found that Toprol may interfere with carb metabolism & thus cause Type 2 diabetes. I asked my doctor if I could discontinue the Toprol. She was not happy about it (rather nasty actually) but suggested how to gradually decrease it. My muscle aches & pains have almost entirely disappeared. My partner noticed even before I did. He said, "You walk so much better now - it's obviously you are in less pain." And my BP actually went down. I still take Benicar which seems to have a lot fewer side effects (actually my BP is so low, I may consider stopping it - I think that my MDs were way too aggressive in treating my borderline HBP). I feel so much better. For anyone having muscle pains, I would suggest that you talk to your MD about switching to another med.

HI everyone,
I have begun to wean off the Toprol I am only taking 50 once a day now for a week then will drop to 25Mg for 1 week then 12.5.for a week, then hopefully STOP.

So far so good.
I have read other posts that feel Toprol is linked to blood sugar issues. I am also type 2 diabetic and my sugars were all over the place . For the past week they seem to have normalized a bit since I began weaning down the Toprol. I am looking for an herbal alternative for my BP which is also just borderline high.

I just saw a prevenative cardiologist she did a lot of blood work and 2 of my independent risk markers for cardivascular disease and stroke were abnormal. My homosistein and my lipoprotien. The homosistene was moderatley high and the L-protien severly elevated. So I have some work to do to get those numbers down . I am a little overweight
( 30- 35 lbs) but not morbidly obese.
So I know I must get my BP and to a normal level and lose this extra weight 3 years ago I lost almost 60 pbs and was at my goal weight then came Toprol and I gained 35 # . :-(
It won't budge!!!

I think my sweating is a bit better.
I think my body needs a little more time until I know how I really am feeling.
Best wishes to all dealing with this drug.

Our Dr's didn't give me to much trouble when I said I wanted my husband and I off the Toprol. They tried to give me some line about "everyone gets side effects thats normal..." I told them, " Please understand DR I read to many posts from too many people having the identical reactions. This is not just a coincidence!!!" Both Dr's gave in when they saw I wasn't changing my mind!! LOL
Will keep you posted.

Have a safe and HAPPY 4TH OF JULY EVERYONE!!
Joyce :-)
