55 year old female I have been on Toprol 5 years. 50mg. it works for me but since it went generic,I wonder...I am on 10mg lexapro and December started the vivelle-dot for my hotflashes. It is now June and the last 4 weeks my hair is falling out big time. It is so thin I have to wear a scarf as not to scare small children at work.!! :) I have talked to a couple of hairdressers and they have told me many of they're clients with thinning hair were on Toprol. Anyone heard of this? Please help me figure this out.

Hi! I was just searching the posts to see if anyone else has hair loss. There was one post awhile ago and was wondering if there was any replies to that one when I found your post. I'm a 64 year old female and I'm having this same problem with the loss of my hair. I'm waiting for my doctor to return my call, my hair is getting so thin that when I parted my hair in several spots this morning I couldn't believe my eyes. I have patches of missing hair. I started on Toprol (the generic) the end of Feb. for heart palpitations. I was on 25 mg Metotoprol with the Lisinapril (ace inhibitor) that I was originally taking for HP. I was so dizzy taking both and my blood pressure was too low 105/64. I was so tired I felt like I couldn't do anything and was depressed, had brain fog and just didn't feel good at all. The doctor took me off the Lisinopril but I still wasn't feeling well. I go to Weight Watchers every week and have been a little below goal for 6 years but now I'm struggling to keep the weight off and put on a few pounds, I just make not paying for the lecture, I'm lifetime member and haven't paid in 6 years. I cut the Metotoprol in half and I'm taking 12.5 mg. now, with my doctors knowledge but my hair is falling out. Does anyone else that's reading this response have this problem? I'm glad you posted this instead of me feeling alone with this problem. I have a book by Bottom Line that lists the medications that cause hair loss and Toprol is one of them. I'll let you know what my doctor says when she calls. Also did your hairdresser say that the hair grows back and how long does it take to grow back if it does? I'll be in touch, my user name on this website is MarieTheresa. Thank you.

Yes!!! I am taking 100 mg of Metoprolol twice a day, for over a year, combined with Benicar HCT for high blood pressure. I have gained 25 pounds, even though I exercise and watch what I eat. Have EXTREME fatigue, joint aches and shortness of breath. Also sometimes experience the coughing. Symptoms seem to have worsened the longer I take this medication. The hair loss started slowly, but has gotten worse. I have an appointment with my doctor next month and want to know if it is really necessary to take such a high dosage. I originally thought the problem was thyroid related and perhaps related to the levoxyl I take since my thryroid was removed. But those levels have been stable for years, and I believe the hair loss is due to the Metoprolol. Like the others experiencing this hair loss, I am anxious to know if it will be reversible once the dosage is lowered - or this medication is replaced with a different medication.
