Beta Blockers can cause bronchospasms and asthma like symptoms (shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness, etc.) - if this does not get better you may need a different classification of HBP medication.

I just wanted to comment on your last sentence. Toprol XL cannot be cut or halfed etc as it is a time released tablet. If it is just plain Toprol or Metoprolol(the generic) then you can split them up. By cutting or dividing a time released medication you risk getting too much or too little.

hi, I am a nurse and give toprol often to patients and am on it myself, I just wanted to let you know that you can get pill cutters at any pharmacy. it is a little plastic holder with a hinged closure with a razor blade. This will help you divide more accuratly, because those pills never break where you want them to.
