I am a physician who also happens to be on Toprol. I was exploring the "side effect" sites and found your posting. Toprol is in the class of drugs called beta blockers, and ALL of the symptoms you describe, especially the difficulty breathing and depression, are COMMON side effects of beta blockers. We see these very side effects with beta blocker eye drops used to treat glaucoma. I can't give you any medical advice, but I would recommend you find a physician who will listen to you!
I was on Toprol for 5 years and I had your side effects - chest tightness, breathing problems, sadness and depression, sleeping difficulties - and on and on. It got so bad that I was having SEVERE breathing problems daily - until finally a pulmonolgist told me to get off the Toprol (Beta Blocker). He was right - I weaned off slowly and have been off for about 35 days - and am starting to feel much better.
Good luck to you and I hope you feel better soon!
Thanks for the information Dr. - I wish my Dr. had had the knowledge that you do!
I have been on for a little less than 2 months and my cardiologist told me to stop taking them. I started out taking 2 pills a day, then 1. He told me to stop them completely because of the side effects I was having. I am really nervous but it is worth a try. Glad that you are feeling better, hope I will soon and thanks to the physician who responded.
