My mother is 40 yrs old and has RA and gets remicade treatments through an iv . It seems to help with the pain of her RA, but the side affects are out of control!!!! she has white puss pockets that show up on her hands and feet. She was told that that was her white blood cells dieing from the treatment. her hands and feet peel and swell making it hard for her to walk or touch anything. her throat has these awful spasms that make it hard for her to eat or drink anything. Theres so much more, it would take all day to explain! Is this really the price she must pay for RA relief??????

I am glad that I found this website! I have been trying to find out how long it takes for my moon face to go away. I was prescribed 60mgs daily of Prednisone while 35 weeks pregnant for 3 weeks. When pregnant, I developed a condition called Thyromocypenia (my white blood cells die off during my pregnancies). In order for my OB to not have to put me under again for a repeat c-section, she referred me to a hematologist who put me on this drug. I asked him about side effects and he stated that the most common is increased appetite, which did not affect me. Even though I was pregnant at the time, my appetite did not change, but what did change was my face after I stopped taking the Prednisone. While in the hospital after the birth of my son, they did taper the dosage for 3 days and at the point of discharge, I was completely off the drug. I left the hospital on a Wednesday and overnight my face had swollen so strangely that I went back to the hospital on Friday. I had no idea that there was such a thing as this moon face syndrome. The nurse that attended to me in the emergency room told me about it. She said that she had taken Prednisone before for asthma and it took her face 3 weeks to return to normal.

I just had my son on 5/4, and my face has been swollen exactly a week today. I can see where some areas are reducing, but it is still not back to normal. My face did not swell at all during my pregnancy and I only gained 18lbs, so this was really startling for me to have been through 9 months looking great and after giving birth sitting up with a pie face, swollen nose, swollen lips, a swollen neck, and swollen shoulders. I also experienced a couple of migraines that nearly took me out. I hope to never have to take this drug again!

Quinolinic acid and neurotoxicity:

Montelukast contains a quinoline radical. Quinolinic acid, a well known damaging neurotoxin that kills neurons, can be produced from a quinoline and hydrogen peroxide. The body produces hydrogen peroxide for a numbers of reasons. White blood cells produce hydrogen peroxide when activated by antigens such as bacteria, virus, fungus etc. It is also produced under conditions when the body is stressed. It is also produced in the gastrointestinal track.

If we knew how montelukast could break up to free the quinoline radical, then we might be able to define a number of different scenarios under which hydrogen peroxide could cause montelukast to generate the neurotoxin quinolinic acid.

If we could prove that montelukast is capable of produce quinolinic acid under unusual circumstances (doesn't happen to everybody), then we would have a very good explanation for all of the psychiatric adverse drug reactions that are mentioned here which include hallucinations, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideations, night mares, etc. etc.

Anyone looking for answers should try to pursue the possibility that quinolinic acid is causing bad side effects. I wish that I was much better at chemistry. I am stuck here at the moment. I keep hoping that somebody else with more expertise will come here to tell us how it happens.

I am a 24 year old male. I started taking 25 mg toprol because I was rushed to the hospitol with left face, back left of my head and left arm going numb. At arrival my blood pressure reading was 202/120 and they couldn't get it down right away and I don't think they had any idea what was wrong. They did a million test and the only thing they fpund out they thought was that my (I think my white blood cells being at 56) so they said I had polysithemia( not sure of the spelling) so they sent me home with 25 mg of toprol and every other week drawing a pint of blood from me. Which sort of helped but then I started getting these terrible headeaches in the back left of my head that are the worst pain, it shuts me right down its hard to function. and at this time blood pressure was still pretty high 165-170/95-105 on average. so they upped my dose to 50 mg and for a couple of months I just dealt with the pain that I was still having cause I gave up on my doctors they were realy starting to piss me off. then I had another check up and my blood pressure I told them was still high 145-155/95-100 so they upped my dose again to 100 mg. but know I have terrible lower back pain which I thought it was my kidneys but got check and it isn't same damn head aches tingling in my left part of my face, deep muscle pain, leg cramps all the time specially my left calf for some reason, my eyes are swelled shut 3 out of 7 days a week and through out the day my eyes are almost always blood shot red, like there bleeding. and like all this isn't enough I have had mono, tharyngitis lyarangitis, scarlet fever, pneumonea, and broncittis all in the last 6 to 7 months. Fun!!! any feed back would be greatly appreciated

thanks
don cross
