I am 18 years old and ive been taking Yasmin for about 2 years, and tonight i came across all of these stories of bad experiences.
after putting together the pieces, ive realized that im not crazy after all! i have had every symptom out there for this pill except high blood pressure and nausea.
i used to be 135 pounds before i got on this pill, and now i am 160 pounds.
i find myself crying all the time, im surprised my boyfriend can put up with it.
i have no energy, all i want to do is sleep. i get sharp pains behind my eyes that cause me to shift them to find a spot where it wont hurt. i have no sex drive at all. i constantly feel depressed and sometimes don't want to live. im so tired of feeling this way.
the only good thing that happened for me was that my skin had cleared up tremendously!
and now i want to just stop and quit this pill right now! im just afraid my acne will come back.
this pill should not be given to women, all of these stories show great reasons on why its harmful.
PLEASE DON'T TAKE THIS PILL!! ITS NOT WORTH IT.
im glad i found all this out before it was too late.
my boyfriend wants me to finish the rest of my pill pack but i just want to stop right now.
i don't know what to do.
if i continue taking this pill for the rest of the pack i will feel worse about it each day knowing its harming my body and life.
help.

So thankful I found this website and that I am not the only one having these problems! I started the NR this past February and thought it would be great not to have to worry about taking the pill. I had been taking Kariva and besides it being a pain to worry about, I also started gaining wt for the first time since high school (it had been two years with no wt gain). A few months ago I started working with a personal trainer and running to prepare for a 1/2 marathon...after three months I am now up 7 lbs even with working out 6 days a week! I assume it is severely causing me to retain fluid. I have not noticed mood changes but definitely no sex drive. I used to get migraines all the time and those are actually gone. The biggest side effect I have noticed which no one else has mentioned is heart problems. I have always worked out and ran a lot in high school with no previous problems. When I began training for my 1/2 marathon I noticed I was SOB, fatigued, and having palpitations all the time. Running for long periods of time has been impossible. I never thought it could be the NR until the last few days. It is the only thing I have done different. If I weren't married I would quit bc all together but instead I plan on going back to Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo which I had the best results from.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I thought I was totally crazy and something seriously wrong with me: Absolutely No Sex Drive, Horrible acne all over my face (really bad under the skin huge ones) and on my chest, neck and back, back depressions and mood swings, bloating, upper back pain, and weight gain! I am an active person and have been on dance teams for years now and I have never gained weight the way I do now. I have also always had energy to do everything! And I don't have any to even get up off the couch right now! :( I thought that my upper back pain was just from everyday/coaching stress but my massage therapist says that the tenseness in my back is unlike anything she's ever seen! I feel like my stomach is going to explode after I've eaten the smalls meal and then my digestive system doesn't work like it used to before my IUD. I've become a completely different person than before I got my IUD! I am going to call my doctor today and make an appointment to go talk about options. I REALLY LOVE NOT having a period and not having to worry about taking a pill or using a condom. My husband likes that aspect too so we will see what the doctor has to say and if they have any advise or suggestions on what to do. I will keep you all posted!!!!

The first week of using NuvaRing I had so much nausea and breast pain that I thought i was pregnant. I use the NuvaRing for 3 weeks now, I have no sex drive anymore, I make nightmares every night, and I am anxious about every small things. And since 3 days I have vaginal irritation, very painful during the sexual relation.
I also gain weight even if i'm a very active person.
So I will take it out to see if i come back to normal. Hopefully I will!!!
(Sorry for my bad English, i found no french forum for the NuvaRing =\ )

Last December '07 I had the mirena put in and this summer I noticed that I had NO sex drive what-so-ever in addition to the cyst-like pimples on my face. I got it out about a month ago (Sept '08) and I think things are starting to even out but now I have an odorous discharge that I've never had before. Does any body know should I go to the OB or will it go away on it's own?

I took loestrin for 3 weeks and of all the pills i have ever been on this one is the worst. I have had acne, weight gain, headaches, cramps, no sex drive, anxiety, rapid heart rate, my breast were extremely sore, and depression. I didn't even finish the pack because I was severely paranoid that I was going to have a heart attack. Once I stopped I got my period within 2 days and all of those side effects went away. My only issue now is I haven't had my period since that time. It has only been a month and a pregnancy test came out negative adding to the fact that I don't feel like I did when I was pregnant. It is still frightening though.

omg! I have had the MIRENA for three years now and just found this site.Like most I am experiencing the major weight gain, depression, acne and sex drive that does not exist.I thought that something else was wrong. When i asked my doctor he said these side affects are very unlikely but those have always been the ones i get.If it wasn't for my wonderful husband who supports me i wouldn't of even looked this up.After reading all these comments I know that I am not alone and am calling my doctor 1st thing Monday to get thing thing out of my body! i will post a few months later to let you all know how this went. thank you so much!!!!!!!!

I'm glad I read this. I got the Mirena in March of 2007. I didn't have any symptoms for about the first year. In February of 2008, I started getting headaches almost every day and thought I had tension headaches... Then, I would come home from work feeling tired and irritable and just sleep for hours, wake up to eat dinner and spend time with my husband and son and then go back to bed. I'm SO tired of being tired and irritable. I've gone through small bouts of depression and anxiety. Then, what's happened in the past two months is that my hair has gotten thinner (my hairstylist even noticed) and I've begun to break out really bad around my chin and neck. I've NEVER had a problem with acne before and now these are scarring! It's horrible. If I hadn't come by this site, I would still be wondering what's wrong with me, but now I know. I'm only 24 years old and I have the sex drive of an 80 year old, I swear. I thought I could wait it out and have Mirena removed as scheduled in March 2009, but I can't! I am getting it out as soon as the GYN can give me an appointment!

I have been on Loestrin 24 Fe for about 2 months now and I haven't really had any problems per se. I had my first period after starting the pill for only 3-4 days and it was very light. I started taking it in the middle of the month since my ob/gyn told me not to wait until my next period since we didn't know when that would come considering I just had a baby in June. So far I've only had one day of spotting at an unusual time, no cramps at all, my face a cleared up considerably, no facial hair and just a tad bit of weight gain (like 5lbs.) which I don't think is from the pill. Although I am concerned considering I'm about 10 days late for my period and I've taken a pregnancy test and it was negative. I also have noticed an EXTREME decline in my sex drive. I guess I'll stick with it and hope it gets a little better.

I have been on b/c for about 7 years. 6 o those years was on a low dose pill and this last year I have been on the ring. I have experienced a steady annual weight gain despite a relatively active lifestyle. I would estimate I have gained a total of 15 pounds since beginning bc. I have an average of two migraines a month which I initially thought were sinus headaches and were later diagnosed as migraines, I have been able to track them to specific times in the month, which indicates that it is directly related to the hormones. I have experienced a significant decrease in my sex drive, and since switching to the ring I have had issues with vaginal dryness and pain following sex. My periods are light, cramping is very mild and it is a very effective method of birth control. However, I am at a point where I just don't feel that the side effects are worth the advantage. As a married woman with no children, my husband and I are seriously considering an alternate form on bc. Does anyone have any recommendations of success with non hormone birth control?

I am so sorry to read about the bad experiences with Mirena. For myself I was put on it to keep hyperplasia and the beginnings of an oestrogen dependent cancer at bay. I was very hesitant at the thought of having something in me but oral progesterone had left me bloated, with awful migraines and terrible mood swings.

Once the Mirena had been inserted, It took a few months for all the bleeding I had been having to calm down and eventually stop altogether, but the most wonderful thing to me about Mirena were the side effects it had on me. My monthly migraines completely disappeared, so did my terrible depressive PMT, and best of all, the severe almost disabling pain from endometriosis was completely gone! I began to be one of those blessed women who hardly know they are having a period.

Five years later and a repeat one was put in last week. I have an extremely gentle and skilled gynae and a lot of the problems I am reading about seem to be related to incorrect insertion that is leading to terrible pain afterwards, because the darn thing is to low in the uterus and is sticking into the poor woman.

I quite understand those for whom is just seems not to be suitable, but for me I wish I had known about it's wonderful effect on endometriosis, migraines and PMT years ago. I would have taken it for that alone 20 years ago. And it is keeping me cancer free. My sex drive has also not diminished on it at all.

So I post this just to balance the negative experiences. Above all get a skilled and gentle Gynae.......that is the secret of skilled, speedy, and gentle insertion of an IUD.

I had my mirena coil removed today!!!! Yipee!!
My Doctor was very defensive, tried to tell me my weight gain, bloating, pain, constant spotting were not likely to be related and better than the ghastly periods I suffered before. Sorry but I think a heavy period will be a relief if I get rid of all the other stuff. The mirena sounded perfect but I've put up with 18 months of increasing discomfort and I did have to stand my ground today to get the damn thing removed! Good luck

Hi all I am so relieved to find out that I am not completely crazy. My main problem is absolute no sex drive and my breasts go mental at the slightest touch. having sex is so painful and like the rest of you have had to use lube. It has got so bad I was dreading having sex because of the horrible burning sensation and dryness. Also I have been on an emotional roller coaster with the last 3 months since I started using it.

I think its the end of birth control for me i am 26 and I have tried the pill, and implanon and both caused be to have irregular heavy periods like every second week. was completely worn out. I thought nuvaring was finally the answer because my periods went back to normal but thats the only good thing about it!!

So glad I found this site!! i just went to the Mirena website to check side effects. i had this inserted a few weeks after i had my first daughter in December of 07. The last two months or so of my pregnancy i noticed my sex drive was slowing down, but it mostly was just the thought of the discomfort(I put on 50 pounds lol) So for months now, I have had the same decreased sex drive-it brings me to tears! I was never like this in my life, and I finally thought that maybe something was up with this Mirena. Once I read the posts, ans saw some of others side effects, i think thats whats going on. I have had Horrible leg cramps in my lower legs, severe shooting pain when I stand up, and I could not figure that out either. I even just last week, went out and bought expensive new sneakers and have been trying to where them thinking maybe all my other shoes were messing something up. Now I doubt it! Luckily my periods have not been bad, except the fact that they are beyond irregular(just light) and my cramps are about the same, but I do get some sharp cramps like i never felt in my abdomen. AND!!! I have lost all but about ten ponds of baby weight, but I have been on Phentermetrizine (same as Phentermine diet pill) from the doc, and have only been able to lose about 3 pounds in a month, so I am thinking this thing is def. holding some weight on me. Hope I can get it out, I don't have any insurance anymore!!!

I have had the Mirena for 2 years now. The first year was fine, I did not have a period or anything. However, now in the 2nd year I have started having a period every 21 days that last for 7 days, it is so heavy that I bleed through a super tampon. The doctor did not tell me that I would lose my sex drive, sex with my husband is non-existent. I have developed an itchy rash under my arm and don't get me to talking about the cramps. I am so disappointed and I am having this thing removed ASAP.

there are 25 pages here! i am shocked, i've been a nuvaring user for a few years now.. (i'm 20) i didn't know about the decreased sex drive but mine is non-existent! what's the point in taking birth control when you barely have sex? i know it sounds backwards but i'm going to stop taking nuvaring and see if my sex drive comes back, and then if i start having more sex, i'm going to pick a different type of BC. (i'm with a steady partner and we use condoms anyway)

i'm started to get scared of these hormones, though..

Well after reading all of this I feel really stupid. I've been on NR for 7 years. I got on it when I went to college and never tried anything else. All these years I thought all these things were just something wrong with me. I had migraines that would last for up to a week in which I had to get a shot from my doctor to get rid of. I had horrible night sweats and horrible anxiety talking to new people. The worst part is the sex drive. I've been married a little over a year now, and can honestly say that i never want to have sex. I feel horrible, but it never interests me. After reading all of this, I decided to take it out. Here's hoping that things change and I can remember who I was back in high school !!

I took Lexapro for about a year and it worked wonderfully for me for about 6 months. It stabilized my moods and helped with my social anxiety. Then I felt like it wasn’t working anymore so my doctor took me off it. We tried something else, got zero results, so I switched back. Again, it worked fabulously for awhile, then stopped. We did the switch again, went back to it, and same thing. This became a nuisance so I’ve gone off and am trying something new but maybe you’ll have more permanent results. I would recommend it for sure. I did have the decreased sex drive though. It literally diminished to nothing, but I'm told that's common with anti-depressants. I also had headaches but I can't swear that to the Lexapro. I would definitely recommend this drug for social anxiety, depression, or bi-polar. I don’t know about other uses for it so can’t give an opinion.

i want my body back!! i've been on b/c for the past 4 years. 3 Yasmin 1 yaz. i feel so stupid that i did not notice what it was doing to me . my side effects were no where as bad as everyone else's, but one thing is for sure, i have NO SEX DRIVE AT ALL!! I feel so bad for my husband. For the past three years i have been totally against having sex and always have to force myself. this is not normal for a 26 year old old who has a wonderful, good looking husband who i love with all my heart. my chest gets sore a lot as well. i just want to get off of these pills already so i can be myself with out chemicals interfering in my life. we're going to try condoms for a while until my husband can go in for a vasectomy. i wish there were more birth control options out there that won't screw u up.

I HAD MIRENA INSERTED A YEAR AGO. IT WAS OK AT FIRST. JUST BLED FOR 3 MONTHS STRAIGHT AND MIGRAINES OUT OF NO WHERE. I HAD NEVER HAD MIGRAINES BEFORE. THEN THROUGH THE YEAR IVE HAD ACNE, CANT LOSE WEIGHT, MOOD SWINGS, NO SEX DRIVE, DEPRESSION, LEG PAIN, CRAMPING, COULDN'T WALK UPRIGHT, BAD WATER RETENTION, AND A FEW OTHER THINGS...I DECIDED TO TAKE IT OUT AND FOR THE FIRST 24 HOURS IVE BEEN PEEING A LOT. I RELEASED ALL THAT WATER AND I DON'T HAVE LEG PAIN OR WALK FUNNY ANYMORE!!! PREVIOUSLY I SAW A PSYCHIC AND WITHOUT MENTIONING THE IUD SHE TOLD ME TO TAKE OUT THE THING BECAUSE THE HORMONES WERE WORKING AGAINST MY BODY AND NOT WITH IT. SHE SAID IT WAS CAUSING EMOTIONAL ANXIETY AND IT WASN'T GOOD FOR MY MENTAL HEALTH...WEIRD HUH?

Oh, but I forgot to add one good thing since getting it out, my sex drive has definitely come back.....and I also forgot to say that with Mirena I took several pregnancy tests since these symptoms felt so much like being pregnant, so now I'm not really concerned that I'm pregnant, I just think my body is messed up from the Mirena and trying to adjust, I guess I'm used to feeling this way after months and months of it....
