Agree with the earlier post -- read the drug insert that comes with your Rx! Majority of these side effects are well-known. Blood clots are a very well-known potential side effect of hormonal birth control -- non common but certainly devastating if it happens. Chances are good that these individuals have a genetic tendency toward abnormal clotting. The only good news for these gals is that they've had a warning (it's likely to happen again).
Re sexual dysfunction, it is a VERY common side effect of all hormonal BC. But especially with Yasmin and Yaz -- the form of progestin in these BC pills has anti-testosterone action which is great for acne but lousy for your sex life. Unfortunately, you might not be able to have clear skin AND libido.
For those with serious mood disorders on the pill, consider non hormonal forms of BC -- copper IUD inserted by an experienced clinician is worth considering.
And gals in your 40s, guess what? PMS often gets worse with age and then slides right into perimenopausal symptoms (did u know 10% of women never stop having hot flashes?!). Normalizing with BC pills is an option, but the sexual side effects are even worse for us older gals.

I have a pretty severe form of cystic acne which I had a 9-month treatment for when i was 16. It went away completely after a course of accutane up until about 5 months ago when i started smoking cigarettes for the first time. within a few days, i had full blown acne again around my mouth. i'm 23 and its been literally six years of perfect skin i didn't even have to think about. i didn't realize it was the smoking until a month and a half ago. so i stopped, and the acne cut down drastically but not completely, so i went to the dermatologist for medication.
i was given doxycycline, 100mg twice a day. ive been taking it for a month and my skin is back to perfect however I feel like i'm forever feverish, i get extremely nauseated if i don't even enough to eat when i take it, and i get insane hot flashes within 30 mins of taking it. i'm basically sweating nonstop all day long everyday. i want to stop taking it but i don't want the acne to return. i cut down to one pill a day and already see some acne returning. i'm so glad i found this site -- none of the side effects ive seen listed include hot flashes or constant sweating. i also have pretty intense lower back pains

I began the three month Lupron shot about 2 weeks ago. After about a week I began to notice that I was having some side effects that I was not made aware that could even be possible. It wasn't just vaginal dryness and hot flashes. I was having a very hard time urinating a began bleeding for a day or two at a time which was heavy and unusual with a lot of large blood clots. I have had a lot of anxiety attacks especially when trying to go to sleep. My stomach has been hurting me terribly to the point I can't sleep, it hurts as though I have severe intestinal problems. I have had extreme bouts of uncontrollable anger, which is horrible when you have a two year old to care for. I have had miserable migraines, breast pain to the point where just a t-shirt on hurts. I feel so emotionally out of touch crying over everything and not caring about much of anything. I feel like I am going absolutely CRAZY! I wish that doctors would let people know what ALL the side effects could be, I feel like I as many people on here were completely under informed.

I just started taking the generic Wellbutrin SL 150mg last month. I was on generic Zoloft and felt like it had not been working for a few years (well, actually not working since I went on the generic form due to the high cost of the name brand.) My dr. told me to wean off Zoloft (cut pill in half) for a week while taking Wellbutrin. After the first week of this, I was scared. My heart was racing, I was out of breath just climbing the stairs (which I do a lot every day holding a baby...never a problem before), hot flashes, dizziness, a heart burn feeling in my chest, etc. I called my dr. back and she said to continue taking Zoloft for another week. I felt better once I began it again. I gave myself another week taking both drugs and then stopped Zoloft for the last time. Since then, I have had horrible mood swings with bursts of anger and constant crying fits. I rarely feel good and am waiting for the energy to come that I read in other people's postings. Instead of energy, I am experiencing severe tiredness. I have just been tested for Celiac disease, which could explain the tiredness, mood swings, etc., but not to the extent of what I am currently experiencing. Since being on Wellbutrin, I feel like I am in a nightmare. My husband and kids don't know what to expect from me day-to-day. I want to get off this drug, but know I need to be on something This one works well for my brother, so I thought I would give it a try. I'm ready to go back on Zoloft and forget trying to find something that works better for me. I can't handle the mood swings and crying. At least with Zoloft, I was more mellow - just no energy.

Im also a victim of the Kenalog shot. I was having pain due to what fibromyalgia. I couldn't see my regular doctor because she is a great doctor and its very hard to get an appointment with her so I took an appointment with another doctor at the same office because I needed relief from the pain soon. This doctor said the steroid shot would kill the pain right away so after the visit with him the nurse gave me the shot. Ever since then I haven't been the same. My hormones are all out of whack, with 2 long periods a month , bad migraines, hot flashes. Not to mention the ugly deformity I have from the sight wear I got the shot on my butt. The dent started small and is now bigger. Im so upset. I had no plans of becoming a model or anything but this is my body and now I feel uncomfortable in the nude!!! Im outraged and hurt. If I knew that this would happen I would have never excepted this stupid shot that didn't even really help me!!!! I have self esteem issues like most women now I have to add this pointless deformity on top of everything!!!

I am being treated with Cellcept (1000 mg in the morning and 1000 mg in the evening) for pemphigus vulgaris. Although I am post-menopausal, recently hot flashes have reappeared (yuck), and I am curious if they could be attributed to the Cellcept. I am also on Dapsone, Prednisone, and Valtrex my other main pemphigus medications). I have been taking Cellcept for about 2-1/2 years at this same dose.

I recently lost about 25 lbs and decided after about 8 years of 10 mg of lipitor, to go off of it, cold turkey. I consulted both my MD and my pharmacist about whether or not I should wean, and both declined.
I now feel that my sweats, hot flashes are out of control. I am so hot and tired. I feel as though I cannot do the daily functions that I am responsible for.
I truly had NO side effects that I know of ON the drug. I just figured I'd see how I do now that I lost some weight. I wonder if going OFF lipitor is dangerous?
If anyone knows, please reply!
Thank you!

I was prescribed the 4mg methylprednisolone pack along with 50 mg tramadol for acute tendinitis in my wrist. I took the first 3 days of the prednisone and only 2 doses of the tramadol over the three days. For a total of 60 mg of prednisone.
The first day I had hot flashes and insomnia but attributed it to the tramadol because I had never taken it before and had taken the prednisone several years ago for poison ivy with no adverse reactions. I didn't take the tramadol the second night and then took it again last night along with my daily dose of prednisone. I had extreme difficulty falling asleep, heart burn, hot flashes; and tossed and turned all night trying to fall asleep. At around 2am, I began to have difficulty breathing, tightening in my chest, confusion, and racing thoughts. It felt as though my throat was closing up on me. My anxiety progressed to the point that I was pacing back and forth. I woke my husband up and told him to prepare to take me to the ER. After calling my insurance's 24 hour help line, it was recommended that I go to the ER. I had an x-ray, blood work, urine drug screen, and echocardiogram. Luckily, everything was negative. The ER doctor told me that I likely had a reaction to the prednisone and commented that some people will experience these symptoms when taking it. He stated that he had a similar reaction when he took it and it felt like he was climbing the walls, which is an accurate description of my experience that night. He recommended that I either stop taking it altogether or call my primary care provider and cut it down. He prescribed me xanax and administered some to me at the ER which greatly helped. The next day I stopped taking the pred but am still having dizziness, chest tightness, hot flashes, and mental dullness. I have decided to never take this medication again. Fortunately, I don't have any of the physical sx that some have experienced, and my heart goes out to you. I think the mental symptoms were traumatic enough for me and can't imagine having both as I would be a basket case. I have mood swings, some melancholia, and am very fatigued.
I think it is imperative to research any medication that is prescribed to you before you take it. Many providers will say that side effects are rare, but my experience is that side effects are more common than rare. My prayers go out to those of you who are going through what I am going through. I hope that it clears our systems quickly because this is no way to live. I'd rather put up with the pain of tendinitis or carpel tunnel than to have these symptoms.

Wow ~ I am so happy that I came across this website tonight. I started taking Yasmin a year ago and I am calling my doctor's office tomorrow to get off this pill! I initially started my search on WebMD's symptom checker because I am so frustrated with never feeling right! When I came across all of these stories, it started to piece everything together and I couldn't believe that I never thought my problems could be caused by my birth control pill!! I am 29 years old and have always been a very healthy woman, which is why I have been so frustrated because I KNOW that something is not normal with the way I have been feeling ~ this is what I have been experiencing for the last year, with some of the symptoms getting worse over the last 6 months: constant waves of nausea (everyday!), heart palpitations, anxiety, diarrhea, gas, stomach problems, hot flashes, complete intolerance to the heat, dizziness, headaches, sore calves, sore breasts. I had told my doctor about the stomach issues, the nausea, the heart palpitations, and she actually prescribed Xanax because they were all symptoms of anxiety (which I couldn't believe that I had because I am in the best possible place in my life now!) ~ but that is beside the point. I am now starting to believe that anxiety should not be the diagnosis, but a symptom of being on Yasmin!! I hope I can update this posting in a few months with great news after I switch to something else!

This is unbelievable... i thought everything that's been wrong with me, has been in 'my head', sex drive, weight gain, fuzzy vision, mood swings...
I honestly think this should be taken off the market. I cannot believe everyone's comments about this contraception. I have taken the pill over the years, depo provera, and thought my mood swings were bad then, but what really is the kicker, is the sex drive, hot flashes and weight gain/bloating.
At 29 years old, i have never felt the way i've felt on this, i've been trying to explain to my boyfriend 'it's just me' !, now i realize why.
as for the weight gain, i have always been conscious of my diet and exercise. for the past two weeks i have especially been trying to lose weight, but to no avail. hot flashes, it's insane. Please after reading this, look for another form of birth control. This should never have been approved. I took it out immediately after reading other's comments.

I have been on the NR for almost 2 years. I hate taking pills b/c I would forget to take them on a regular basis and trying to play catch up in just crazy. But I also suffered from chronic yeast infection so my OB suggested the NR and since I have been on it I have not had anymore YI's. However, I have experienced more vaginal secretions than normal; but it has not alarmed. About 2 weeks after inserting NR ..I experienced breakthrough bleeding and I have been since being on NR and it does not alarm me. I suffer from Hot Flashes and night sweats; but that is from my Thyroid Gland. For those of you experiencing Hot Flashes and Night Sweats..have your PCP do a blood test and check your thyroid hormones. The biggest thing that I have noticed is that while on the NR my YI have virtually gone to 0...I have had more Urinary Tract Infections (UTI) than you can shake a stick at. Has anyone else experienced this and if so what are you doing about it?

I just had my Mirena removed today because of some ridiculous side effects (and a couple other reasons). The side effects I had were - fatigue, nausea, headaches, NO SEX DRIVE AT ALL, vaginal dryness, hot flashes...
MY question is - about an hour after I had it removed I began to get tired. I mean REALLY tired - hard to keep my eyelids up kind of tired. Is this normal? Will this extreme fatigue pass soon?

Extreme body heat, feels like I am on fire. This is worse than
the worst hot flashes I ever had when going through the change.
I am 66 years of age, be 67 in 3 months. Been taking Januvia
for 3 months.
This is not low blood sugar, it has happened at all hours.
Before a meal, after a meal in the middle of the night.
It is just like hot flashes but worse.
My Dr. has offered to put me on HRT.

In the past five years I've gone through two six month Lupron treatments. The first Lupron treatment was given without a Laparoscopy. After being told for ten years that I was one of the unlucky few who have "bad periods", I finally found a doctor who would listen. She diagnosed Endometriosis after I listed my symptoms and put me on a Lupron treatment plan. I had one one-month injection and two three-month injections. Most of my side effects were tolerable; weight loss (almost sixty pounds but I was over weight to begin with), hot flashes, night sweats and memory loss. However, I experienced horrible back and hip pain...to the point of following up with a pain management doctor who insisted there was no reason for me to be in pain.
About four years later I found a really great doctor who performed a laparoscopy to diagnose my endo. She removed fibroid tissue from both ovaries and my colon. My next period was just a horrible so she suggested we follow up with another Lupron cycle. I expressed my concerns with the pain I experienced the first time and she suggested I have add-back therapy. She prescribed a regimen of Estradiol and Norethindrone along with six monthly Lupron injections. The side effects were worse this time around. My depression kicked into overdrive, I was constantly struggling to keep my anger in check, I would wake up dripping from night sweats, hot flashes were bad, blurred vision, memory loss, insomnia and the pain in my back and hips was excruciating. She prescribed Celebrex for my back and hip pain, which didn't help too much. I have a three year old son and had to use a wheel chair when we went to the museum because being on my feet for more than fifteen minutes was impossible.
I've now been off the Lupron for about six months and I have yet to regain any sort of short term memory. My vision is much worse than before I started the second cycle and has yet to reverse. My depression is still bad, as well as anxiety and irritability. However, as soon as the last month of Lupron started to wear off, my back pain did dissipate. I'm still having trouble sleeping but have found solace in Ambien...which could be a bad thing. I don't want to depend on chemicals to help me sleep at night. I just had my yearly exam with my doctor and she apologized for all the pain I experienced. She told me that in all the years she's given Lupron treatments, she had never seen a patient in as much pain as I was in. I don't think I'll be undergoing the Lupron treatments again in the future. I'm currently starting Yaz as a way to keep my periods at bay and only have three or four a year. I'm not real sure if that's a good thing either but we'll see. I have sympathy for all the other Lupron patients out there who experience the bad side of the drug. I don't understand how a medication such as this, which has such drastic side effects, can be marketed to people who are already suffering from pain in the first place.

I was absolutely miserable on lupron. It all started with a softball sized cyst on my L. ovary that burst and landed me in the hospital from the pain. I didn't even know it was there! The Dr. went in to take it out with the scope, and told me that I had stage 3 endometriosis. I never had any pain, so I find it hard to believe that I even had endo. At any rate, he told me in order for it not to come back, I would have to go on Lupron. He told me I may have some hot flashes and vaginal dryness..I read the brochure on it and I thought the side effects would be worth saving my reproductive tract.
I gained 30 lbs during my 4 months on lupron. The hot flashes were terrible, I would have 2 or 3 in an hour, drip sweat, and then freeze. The vaginal dryness was so bad it itched internally, I had to use massive amounts of lube to have sex--which was nearly impossible because my boyfriend couldnt stand to sleep with me constantly moving around, dripping sweat, throwing blankets on and off. I began to have anxiety attacks and terrible mood swings.
I wouldn't recommend this medication to anyone, ever. I was on the monthly dose, refused to stay on the medication after 4 months (June), and just finally got my period a few days ago. I still get occasional hot flashes, especially during or after drinking alcohol. I am doing about an 1 1/2 hours of cardio a day, besides using my bike for transportation, eat clean 90% of the time, and weight train a few days a week. The scale is not budging and I've been at that for about 6 weeks. It is frustrating to say the least. Does anyone know how long it takes your body to get back to normal??

I got it placed in about a month ago and since that time I almost stated immediately with cramps, then headaches, oily skin and acne (like I was 12), instantly mad with hot flashes, started to get a little facial hair and the worst thing of all about week 3 I noticed all my hair was starting to fall out. OMG OMG so I called the GYN and of course everyone said, "oh no it's not the mirena". I am telling you, i was fine before that damn thing was inserted and it was only a month ago. I swear I feel like they just sewed a penis on me and I am slowly turning into an angry man! Oh also the bleeding never stopped during my 1 month deal and it just went from red and heave to brown and smelly and back to red and sorta heavy. very unrealiable periods. The men in our lives can deal with the blood every once in awhile but heck I cant blame by guy, heck i don't even wanna have sex with me! I just got it removed on Friday and I am hoping that I start to grow my hair back (not grow hair on my back - ha) I also hope my headache (both tension and migraine like) stop. I hope to god that my immediate anger level stops (I was NEVER like that). I also asked my dr. to test my testosterone levels to see if that damn thing is messing with our testosterone levels cuz I would swear that I was turning into a man or someone was putting steroids in my kool-aid. Also, my blood pressure is now high so anyway.... long story short is IF you DON'T have to get one of these things don't. I had to get mine because my uterus lining is thick and they wanted to reduce my changes of getting uterine CA - now what they hell am i gonna do. I wish to $#%^ I would known all these side effects. Now I just have to decide what to do now.

Hi. I just had my mirena placed on Sept. 5th, 2008 (5 days ago). I decided to go with this after just giving birth to my 2nd daughter on July 21st, 2008. All my girlfriends have it and recommended it as well as my ob/gyn. I read and watched a dvd about it and then after being told it's only going to cost me my copay of $27, I said oh yeah--for 5 years worth of bc, you bet! Anyhow, the insertion was quick and painless as I had just ended my period that morning, just had a baby 6 weeks prior, and my ob/gyn numbed my cervix. I only bled for about 5 hours after. After my doc placed the mirena he told me if I wanted to that night I could have sex with my husband and nit have to worry about a secondary form of bc. I was not able to that night due to my 2 children (one is 4 and the other is now 7 weeks), but we did get to the next day. I have actually had an increase in my sex drive since having this iud placed and maybe it is just the simple fact that it is a hassle free form of bc that is 99.9% effective. Lately however, in the last couple days I have been feeling irritable, increased anger, depression (which I already take meds for-but don't seem to help-they always had before for 10yrs), crying spells, a lot of anxiety, heart palpations, hard to get to sleep, severe headaches (not quite migraines), hot flashes, lethargic, and now nausea. If some of these symptoms don't go away, I may have to find another bc/iud that would better suit me (perhaps non-hormonal). I don't know that I would recommend mirena to anyone, but I also would not tell anyone it's horrible. Everyone's body reacts differently to medicines. So, if you have one good luck with it and if you're deciding on one, please read all the side effects and testimonials you can-on any that you choose and don't think it can't happen to you-you just never know! Hope this helps someone!

I am 36 years old and my OB thinks I may have endometriosis. For the last two years I have suffered from pain during intercourse heavy periods as well as sistitis in the bladder, I also have a grape size fibroid in my uterus and suffer from night sweats and hot flashes. My Dr. decided to put me on the nuvaring to treat what she thinks is a hormone imbalance. However since starting the ring two weeks ago I am having chest pain, racing heart, shortness of breath and severe mood swings including depression, anxiety and crying spells. Even when I am resting my heart is racing and I have chest pains. There have been some good side affects however such as I think that the sistitis is clearing up and my complexion is better but I do not think it is worth the risk of having a stroke or heart attack to stay on it. It amazes me what drug companies will push through all in the name of profit. Thanks to all of you who have posted your side effects on this site it gave me the courage to call up my Dr. to look into other options of treatment. Bless you all.

I just removed Nuvaring in May after almost 2 years of being on it. The main reason was due to the lack of sex drive and when i did have sex, there would be a pretty bad burning sensation to me and my husband. However, now that i read through your comments, i am realizing that a lot more is attributed to my health now because of the Nuvaring.
Mainly, when i was on it, i had severe headaches, couldn't lose a pound to save my life and was very moody.
The big problems I have are now, almost 4 months being off Nuvaring. My doctor informed me that i may be going through premature menopause - i'm 38 years old - due to a malfunction with my ovaries. What!?!? My mom had her period until she was almost 50 and that is a good indicator of what you will have. I also have really bad joint pain, tingling in my fingers at times, hot flashes, sleeplessness and NO period since coming off it. I am hoping that this is just my body trying to battle the jolt of being on Nuvaring and i will return to normal. My advice - if you're on it, get off it and if you're considering it, don't do it. Even a well-known radio personality here in Chicago has said the Nuvaring did awful things to her body and she experienced a lot of bleeding. This product needs to come off the market NOW!

I've been on the same dose of Levoxyl (118 mcg) for 11 years and I have none of the side effects that have been described. My mother and grandmother also have hypothyroidism, but my mom take 110 mg of synthroid, also prescribed by the same doctor that prescribed me. When I was in the 4th grade my thyroids swelled to the size of golfballs, so much so that you could see them when my head was up, and I was extremely tired and had hot and cold flashes- scary for a 10 year old! My doctor recognized it immediately, and put me on Levoxyl. About a year ago, I gained 15lbs for seemingly no reason, but then this summer I lost about 20lbs. The only difference was taking the medicine 1 hr before I ate anything. I saw someone said that after taking the medication she would get hungry, which I also have, but this makes sense, because Levoxyl is in essence trying to up your metabolism and by doing this you are burning more calories and thus become hungry. If you let this hunger pass, about 20 min later you are no longer hungry and feel great! I still get slight hot flashes, but not too noticeable. I would recommend just as other on here have, that the dose that your doctor may give you may not be 'your' number, and to give it time. If you change your dose, give it 3 months, not 5 days like I saw above! If you have to wait 6 months for 2 dose changes isn't that better than hurting your whole life? GOOD LUCK!

Severe breast pain, bladder infections, hot flashes.
More than a year after stopping Ambien I still have some pain, cannot wear a bra. As a sleep aid, though, Ambien was fine. I went to sleep when I wanted and woke up with a clear head in the morning. I can

THE MIRENA HAS RUINED MY LIFE. AFTER 2 YEARS OF HELL, I HAD IT REMOVED, THEN I STARTED YAZ BUT I HAVE NOT HAD MY PERIOD YET SINCE I HAD THE MIRENA REMOVED 3 MONTHS AGO. IM ALWAYS THINKING IM PREGNANT BUT THE TEST ALWAYS COME OUT NEGATIVE. WHEN WILL I GET MY PERIOD? IM TIRED OF THINKING IM PREGNANT WHEN IM NOT. WHATS WRONG WITH ME? BY THE WAY DID I MENTION I GOT OVARIAN CYSTS BECAUSE OF THE MIRENA. I NOW STOPPED TAKING BIRTH CONTROLS SINCE MY HUSBAND IS AWAY WORKING AND I DON'T NEED BIRTH CONTROL. IM STILL WAITING FOR MY PERIOD TO COME. I HOPE I AM NOT GOING THROUGH EARLY MENOPAUSE. IM ONLY 27 YEARS OLD. IVE HEARD ONE OF THE SIDE EFFECTS OF IUDS IS EARLY MENOPAUSE.
